This is Gizmo, an 8 week old pug. This is his first day of training and we worked on 'crate' so he would be comfortable going in their while his owner was at work. This is only the first step...keep in mind that a similar process is necessary when working on closing the door, locking it, walking away, etc. It is a slow, step by step process. When done properly you will never have a problem. Check out the next step to this, link is below

When I first got my pug, he had to sleep in that cage for a few weeks. The poor little guy... Still, this is very cute! Look at the sweet puppy!

DarthWill3 If that isn't what is happening then you aren't doing it right. If done correctly from birth dogs love it because it's instinctual. If not you can easily train them to.

What kind of treats do you give to him

@LindleyAppollis I couldn't reply to you directly, but you asked what kind of treats do I use. If I'm working with a new dog at someone's house, I bring in the GOOD stuff-lunch meat, boiled chicken, fat free turkey dogs, etc. Tiny Tiny pieces! But when I do board and trains, i will start with a few treats and QUICKLY wean them onto their regular dry kibble. The idea of "working for food" can really create a brain shift when they aren't eating from a bowl but actually working for it. But when I'm a new person in someone's house, I need an edge so I bring in the good stuff. Same if I go to a new area I know the dog will be uncomfortable in. If they aren't that food driven, high value treats....then wean them to kibble :) Hope that helps! And that is only the first step, don't forget to check out the next part of the video, link in description.

When I work with my dog in a high stimulus environment (like a park) for the first several times, or working with a new dog like in this case, I always bring super high value treats. I use boiled chicken (no skin) and/or turkey/chicken lunch meat. If the dog is under high stress or a fearful puppy in a new place, usually the lunch meat will reel them in a bit because of the yummy sodium in it. Just be careful when using it-very small amounts at a time and don't be surprised if they throw up if they are running around outside in the heat when you are working with them (don't panic I mean) (hydrate small amounts at a time) Just try to get them to take chicken instead. -Couple of tricks for really picky eaters-take chicken or lunch meat if your dog likes one of those and put them in a plastic bag with regular treats and/or even kibble over night. That way everything smells like the meat which is a good way to wean your pets off of the high value goodies. Use that bag of treats for a few days, kept in the fridge when not using of course. -Take the chicken if it has been in the fridge and warm it up on the stove with some PAM and a little garlic (don't give them garlic) it just makes it smell like people food and they will be more willing to take it. -Finally-have your dog skip a meal...dogs that free feed may need to skip even more since they likely eat a lot on some days and barely any on other days. A hungry dog will work for food! :-) My morning round of dog classes all skip there breakfast so they are ready to work and extra focused to learn new things!

That is because you didn't move past the beginning stages. This is just to get them comfortable with the crate as young puppies and it does work. If your dog barks, you tell them no. Even puppies can be corrected as long as they are starting to pattern what it is you are doing. At that point they understand and can be told no for something like barking/biting hands/etc. We also use kibble if treats are too exciting and then once the dog is comfortable and not showing any fear you teach impulse control while they are in the crate by having them wait for food and then start with leaving them in and teaching them not to rush the door. If they bark you would absolutely correct that behavior. Look at the other crate videos. Every dog is different and the fact your dog is demanding food from you by barking shows that there are other problems in the training and relationship.
