I was attacked at work years ago. My attacker threw wild, undisciplined punches, all of which I parried whilst waiting for an opening. He then put all of his energy into a kick which, in me dodging it, caused him to overextend. I took advantage of the opening and with one well placed strike sent him down and out. Mark gives good advice about trying to stake it all on one blow. If you miss, as my attacker did, it could leave you open to a counter.

I grew up on a rough estate in Dublin back in the 80s/90s. Fighting was pretty much a given. There was no avoiding it. I began training martial arts at a young age and it definitely helped. Some you won. Some you lost. Others you ran from. Others there was no escape. Knives were always a threat. Multiple attackers. Some gangs always roamed with vicious dogs that they would set on you. Fond memories. 😂 Growing up like that you develop a sense of danger, an awareness, and your fight or flight becomes a lot easier to control. I have ever in my life gone looking to cause harm or start fights, but I'm always ready just in case, unconsciously. And an amusing side effect of growing up in a rough area is that, like a stick insect that can make itself look like a stick to confuse potential predators, you develop an 'estate walk' and attitude that confuse potential predators. I'm 47 now and I still have that walk, for better or worse, and people definitely give you looks on the street as if you might be the danger, even though you're the most peaceful and non-threatening person around. 😂😂 I've walked through Medellín in Colombia at 3am and people have crossed over. 😂 I've no doubt that simply having a certain kind of walk or bearing can automatically eliminate you as a victim in 90% of cases. A lot of these predators are cowards and bullies at heart. Sowing any seed of doubt in their minds at all is enough to break them. As Bruce Lee called it 'the art of fighting without fighting'

When the adrenaline rushes, you need to fight instantly and never wait, scream, discuss, don’t do ego battles an psychological moves. The adrenaline rush can bring you in the freeze position if you control it for to long. Most people are not able to control it. I never wait and discuss if someone triggers the adrenaline rush in me, I‘m simply unable to speak and argue, I need to move and do something, otherwise I‘m lost. In my experience it ends good for me if I act instantly and bad if the arguing and face2face battle starts. I follow 3 rules: 1. Hit first 2. Hit hart 3. Don’t stop hitting until he is done and you can leave safe Then: Leave the situation instantly and fast. Don’t wait, don’t discuss, don’t push your ego. Just run (literally).

I had a guy from High School want to fight me as he heard I was a trained fighter. He was a big football player and was a bully. I refused to fight simply to fight to prove myself. I told him he shouldn't pursue this as it could end up very badly for either or both of us. Well we graduated and he still was after me and cornered me in a convenience store arcade (this was 1986). He threatened to go after a weaker friend of mine and so I asked him to meet me out back. I asked him what he would do if I beat him and he said that he wouldn't pursue my weaker friend. I asked him if he would stop going after me and he said Yes. I asked him if he was ready. He was about 15 feet from me when I asked him this. I then flicked my right shoe off at him and as it grazed his face he turned his head. I was already stepping in with a high side kick and struck him directly in the throat. It immediately dropped him hard upon the asphalt. I got behind him and locked up his arms with a seated neck crank. I told him he was finished now and so was I so I was going to render him assistance in recovering. I removed the pressure and massaged his throat and told him he was lucky I was a good person because if not I could have ended him or permeantly injured him. He agreed with me and actually thanked me for helping him recover. I told him if it ever came to this again I wouldn't be kind again. Point is big, strong, and mean doesn't equal invincible. We must outsmart our opponents and be willing to go as far as we must to end the threat.

It's not "striking first", it's reacting to the aggressor pushing the encounter to a point where defense becomes necessary, and about arm's length is the standard civil distance of conversation. Prosecutors WILL try to characterize that as being the aggressor for various reasons, but the defense is: "How many times do I have to be hit and potentially knocked out or killed before I can defend myself?", and you have to mean that.

I found myself in a street fight outside a bar recently and I'm grateful for the experience. I learned that I need to grow up and stop going to places where aggressive kids or drunks go. The rule is: Don't go to stupid places, at stupid times around stupid people. You never think you'll run into someone that is confrontational and aggressive, but there is a high chance depending on where you go. I tried 3 different ways to deescalate include: apologizing, sympathizing, ignoring. Next I should have left, since only a moron wants to fight after you try to make peace. I'm an honorable person so I gave him a warning and said "are you trying to fight?". However there is no honor in street fighting, and he went straight for eye gauging when he got me on the floor. Which was another needless escalation. Luckily he was inexperienced and we both walked away without injury All he had was a bloody nose and I hit my head lightly on the cement. It's super g*y to get into street fights - avoid it. Something unexperienced fighters don't know is that you need to have had fights to learn how to "flip the switch" of being able to harm another person. I heard most people can't do it, which I guess is why his eye gauge was ineffective. But then you have some people that can see red and act violently without previous experience. P.S I box for fun, but I'm considering learning a form of grappling to become a more competent fighter and defend myself better. P.S.S Don't talk to people you don't know, or make jokes around people that want to cause problems. Approach life smart and professionally.

Learn the secrets of position. It only takes one person deciding to make the move first befor you decided to react. Your brain to muscle movement all it takes is 1/4 of a second for someone to be one step ahead of you from deciding to attack first. Just one second can be too long. It's you or them. Many will post up before an attack. Posting is being in their favorite position to attack from. Some will attack on the move. A sign of an attack is a floating movement. You know how many people walk. There is a time that people will move that shows aggression while moving closer.

The human body is amazingly durable and can withstand ridiculous amounts of injury and punishment, capable of recovering from injuries that would fatally cripple or outright kill most animals. But the human body is also amazingly fragile, breaking and being crippled by seemingly small impacts, falls, and seemingly harmless circumstances. The truth is that hands and feet are deadly weapons too, and taking any hits can be devastating in a fight, *and the encounter begins when the aggressor pushes to the point where the defender MUST defend themselves*.

My cousin Zach only blocked punches from his assailant, but he is a black belt who can fight very well. Hard advice to give to defend given that the majority of people cannot defend at all. But I think if you do combat sports and know how to block punches it is realistic for you to take the defensive option. Counterpunching is a proven method of winning fights! Blocking alone works well against your average punter. They have no stamina so you can outlast them fairly easy. The physical fitness from regular running and skippping rope as in Muy Thai will enable you to prevail. Excellence in basic techniques works well in a street fight situation. He's suggesting that combat sports has no value, but on the contrary even achieving basic boxing level would help you prevail in a street fight. More valuable than any of his other tips all combined, which frankly work better for me or any trained martial artist. Controlling your breathing in stressful situations is only possible after multiple fights. There is no shortcut, you must master at least the basic jab to win a street fight. Better to throw 1000 jabs than listen to any self defence advice.

Most unrealistic s*** I've ever seen. The guy with the knife after his first two slashes, had the entire core of the man's body undefended. It's only because it was scripted he didn't repeatedly stabbed the guy in his heart. If someone comes at you with a knife, when they slash, parry the knife (smack back of hand away from your body), grab the wrist of the knife hand, using your leveraging arm to keep it away from your body, while simultaneously and fluently with violence and speed, deliver blows to the neck face or back of the head with the hand you're not controlling his knife arm with. This is USMC technique for an opponent with a knife. It really helps if you have some sort of club or blunt object, or a long knife yourself. Hell even a shoe can be used to safely Perry a slashing knife away from you. But the key lays within two things. Controlling the knife arm, and the speed at which you then deliver blows to the attacker. If you don't start delivering blows fast enough the attacker might gain control of the knife arm back. So following through as fast as you can with blows is just as important as controlling the knife arm.

The reason why you never act as the aggressor, is that you're going to jail either way. But, if you're the one throwing the first punch... Prison awates. And you're going to learn the harshest lesson about fighting in prison- for every single person who has a strong ability to fight out there, there's someone bigger and stronger. A seventy pound woman can drop a 500 pound man... WITH A GUN. But with her fists? She might as well be playfighting with him. You're not a badass- NOBODY IS. The moment you think that you are, you've lost any inclination to observe, and your only mode is to aggress. That's how people get caught with a punch, stab, or gunshot- they stopped paying attention because they thought they had it in the bag. You're a professional fighter. I'm a security guard and a minuteman. We both have different aspects of a situation, and see it from different angles. I've fought for my life in the streets. I've nearly died from losing, because I listened to people who thought they were God's gift to combat sports. My Dad, however... My Sifu. My Sensei... He taught me to not fight at all. In fact, I'll give you a quote from when he was teaching me to fight back against bullies and the like- "Be unpredictable. If they buck up, try to step back. If they step forwards swinging, reverse course and break everything around you on them. If they don't stop, or they try to kill you, KILL THEM FIRST. Don't ever throw the FIRST punch. But, NEVER BE THE LAST TO GET PUNCHED." He told me that, in that way, because he knew I wasn't prison material. I would have to end fights, not initiate them. I would have to block punches before returning fire. That's why he taught me to block before he taught me to punch. And he taught me to never strike with a closed fist. If you break your hand and don't stop them from trying to hurt you, you can't punch them again. But, if you strike correctly, you won't even be accused of punching at all. 😉😉

Time and again I've been in situations where the attacker has approached me very closely nose to nose with arms outspread demonstrating his "superiority". I love that. It's the typical "in your face" attitude they've seen in boxers meeting before a bout. That's exactly the time you deliver a very swift, sharp and powerful knee to the nuts, followed, if necessary, by a right or left hook. It's never failed me. Another tried and tested method in the same situation is a short, powerful jab with outstretched knuckles (the "middle" knuckles) to the trachea of your opponent. Put all your strength into it. And down goes the baddie. MsG

Street fights and assaults are very different. Street fights are just about impossible to get into, unless you want to fight. An attack/assault on you is where you would need to defend yourself. Attacks are EXTREMELY rare on males, especially if you live anywhere that you should actually be walking around in. Females who get attacked, are screwed, no way they will fend of a decent sized guy, I don't care what you know, sorry. If you hang out in the projects and ghettos, well you will probably get attacked with a weapon(most likely a gun), so fighting doesn't really help that. Stop worrying about fights lol. The video never matches what's being said. It's just random street-fight stuff.

I can't get the exact match that's impossible, but I can get close enough. Which I think I achieve in most occasions. Anyway thanks for watching.

The fight i won by attacking first and breaking my opponents jaw, I was terrified. He was more than twice my size coming at me with fists balled up talking about 'I just got out of prison and I'll rape you' Gave a left hook because I was sure if I didn't hit first i wouldn't get a chance. Knocked him out breaking his jaw on the right side of his face. But he got up and speared me. I sank in a guillotine choke, he stood up like it was nothing. My feet damn near vertical in the air. This was in a baseball diamond near home plate. He ran forward to slam me into the fence of the backstop. I planted my feet on the top of the wooden backstop board. Using that leverage to force him down onto his face. His forward momentum transferred downward. He landed on his belly with his face against the wood of the backstop. That lifted his chin so I was able to sink in the choke and put him to sleep. I didn't know the guy. We had both been working the fair in Auburn California. He attacked me over a complete misunderstanding. The next morning though he did come and shake my hand and apologize. He thought I hit him with a weapon. I was Foreman of the zipper and lifting steel everyday. He was a balloon store salesman (darts at balloon game) because he had his jaw wired shut he was fired because he was unable to work. Can't make money if you can't talk to the people you're trying to scam. 😂 Another self-defense encounter I had where I had to use a knife to stop a home invasion from an ex best friend. I was also terrified. But i successfully neutralized the home invader with a cut to the hand valley point, when he attempted to grab my foot and pull my out of my camper.

This kind of narration while constantly cutting your own words is simply annoying! For Heaven's sake, didn't they teach you in school to speak two or more sentences in a row??? My goodness ...

Your #2 rule is why I don't like living in democratically run cities like D.C. Here, there's a "duty to retreat" law in effect. In essence, you're supposed to run or defend BEFORE you even think of attacking. Ridiculous! I live by the old saying, "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6". I trust a jury of my peers would understand me swinging first if somebody wouldn't back down and even pursued.

Good luck with that if the judge decides to make an example of you and orders the jury to plead guilty.
