724 is a bus number, which he took in Daegu to get to hight school and 148 is a bus number in Seoul. It is probably represents how he grew from Daegu to Seoul

The ad libs and his delivery in Give it to me are fire Lyrically 724148 is one of his more simple works, but this raw straightforward storytelling and how he connects lyrics with musical track and how his voice as always conveys the emotions is so good

Hi Chalfant (Again). Here what you need to know about the second track and thanks for your reaction and your hard work. “치리사일사팔 (724148)” is backed by a bass-heavy beat with light-hearted delivery, although the core themes of the lyrics are not as whimsical as Suga sets them up to be. #724 is the bus Suga used to ride from his home to and from his small music production job in Daegu. It’s symbolic of his struggle at the time: he’d often have to choose between going hungry or walking home due to how little he was paid. #148 is the bus he used to ride from his trainee dorm in Apgujeong in Seoul to and from school and work. It represents his move from a small town with limited prospects, to the big city where he worked tirelessly as a trainee to fulfill his dreams of becoming a musical artist. The lyrics are quite simple to understand since they are written in a narrative style, so I will only elaborate on these lines (Notice that Suga auditioned for BigHit at 17) : I KNEW THE WORLD WAS UNFAIR BUT THERE’S SOMEONE LIVING IN A 15 PYEONG TWO ROOM WITH 10 PEOPLE WHEN THERE’S SOMEONE DRIVING A FOREIGN BRAND CAR RIGHT AFTER GRADUATING A pyeong is a korean unit of measurement, like square feet. “In a 15 pyeong two room with 10 people” means a really small apartment that he had to share with 10 people. These lyrics are saying how unfair it is that August D had to struggle through living so poorly in a small, cramped apartment, while his classmates got nice imported cars after graduating.

Hi Chalfant. As you will have noticed, some themes may seem redundant in this mixtape but often the members of BTS approach their albums as a reflection or even an essay with major themes (Key words). In this case in the mixtape Agust D, it is about dreams, determination and obstacles (No pain No gain). And this track is rich in information. Here is something to complete what you have already understood. “Give it to Me” is the second single off the self-titled mixtape, Agust D, released by Min Yoongi, also referred to as Suga, of BTS. It was released on August 16 and is one of the few tracks to feature a music video. It is a fiery, tumultuous track boasting eccentric strings and jumbled voices with an undertone of a hip hop beat, and in the backing Suga will occasionally laugh, sounding borderline deranged, though the lyrics point to otherwise. The song disses those who tear others down in order to be successful themselves and search for manipulation and dominance in order to assert control. Yoongi flaunts his hard-earned success with confidence and passion and looks upon disdain with people trying to take short cuts. As a BTS member, Suga is often seen as sleepy and lazy, while his self titled album gives him the opportunity to break out and directly contrast his aforementioned agenda. Let’s develop some lyrics: EVEN MY FAMILY COULDN’T FORESEE MY SUCCESS WHAT’S THE POINT OF TALKING ABOUT IT WHEN I WASN’T SURE MYSELF EVEN MY FAMILY APPROVED ME AS A TOUGH COOKIE The use of family, while not seemed to be at first - is smart. No, it does not take the truth out of his sentence. There have been multiple incidences of disapproval his parents voiced at his career at the beginnings, when he was only young, and it is a fact that the family also struggled to get their ends met. Yoongi, [Suga] [Agust D], mentioned he had to choose; “Either I take the bus or eat - not both” It is not susceptible a boy like him would grow up to be a highly successful idol and rapper. Though it should be highlighted he used “Even”. “Even, my family”. Not just, “My family”. This is because parents often have dreams for their child, or are very optimistically supportive, and they weren’t. He also subconsciously plays the listeners mind, by the use of the single word at the start, even without thinking about it, you would automatically assume that he had bet when the odds were against him - and won. Even if you didn’t know his history, that would be what ran through your head. Interestingly, if you were an international fan and did not understand Korean, this trick would not work. He also states of not being sure of himself, which is common, even when not training to be an idol or a rapper, or anything that should be highly successful, it is normal to experience self doubt. Most people self conscious with a subject, would prefer not to talk about, and he voices that opinion. But the last is simple, though; his family think he is tough, and that he is worth it. That is enough for him. AND HEAD TO THE BIG COMPANIES “big companies” most likely refers to the Big Three, the three most powerful k-pop/entertainment companies. These companies have been popular to controversies surrounding “slave contracts” and its very common belief that if you aren’t signed by one of the Big Three companies you wont be successful. BUT AT LEAST, I SLEPT LESS AND STAYED ACTIVE COMPARED TO YOU ALL TO GROW UP Min Yoongi, [Suga] [Agust D], is almost patronising the ones intended to take the hit of the track. He lists only two, simple, well known activities simply containing a good wellbeing and throws it at their face. His previous line, “If you ask me how I’ve succeeded I don’t really have an answer” It is a way of saying, he only stayed healthy and existed without hindrance. Then adds salt to the wound by adding “Compared to you all to grow up” In all its worth. He is basically saying he is more mature, that they are childish and their actions would be best expected from younger age groups, it is phrase commonly used after one has either shown weakness, or acts out recklessly or childishly. There is shown irony in the “Sleep less” line. His stage name, “Suga” comes with his personality the career in K-Pop gave him. He is often seen as being sleepy, sarcastic and lazy. It is almost seen as one of the core aspects of him, and he is known for the annoyance he succumbs to once interrupted for a nap. But this is only because he indeed sleeps less, working late in the night and causing him to feel tired at day. He is throwing this knowledge out there so others do not assume he works less, when really he does more. It could also be Yoongi breaking out of his aforementioned personality he would usually be seen as, and him taking an opportunity to show a more contained, hidden side of him to burst out in all it’s spontaneity and glory. I CAN’T LIVE LIKE A DOG WHEN I’M BORN TO BE A TIGER Agust D, (Min Yoongi), mentions a “dog” and a “tiger”. Both are animals and carry basic similarities despite the fact they technically belong to different families, as a dog is canine and a tiger is a big cat. Dogs are generally domesticated creatures that sometimes suffer abuse. They are often seen to be loyal and honest but naive and simple. Tigers are rare and dangerous. Suga makes a comparison between the two and saying he is the latter and should not live like the former. LAW OF JUNGLE? THE POLITICAL WORLD WITHIN THE WORD “SUCCESS” Suga compares the world of music companies and the life of being a music artist to it being the “Law of the jungle”, which is a phrase to demonstrate the harshness of the industry, everybody vying for their own careers and attention. Despite this disturbing concept of hierarchy order of whomever is at the top beats those at the bottom, Suga does not disdain this pretence, as he mentions the “political word” hidden within the phrase is of success, meaning he is at the top so he needn’t worry, as he is already successful. As for the use of the adjective “political”, it may refer to the cruelness of politics, and levels it with the jungle analogy, bring the same concept and grounding it into a relatable reality. Having an occupation presiding in politics is often seen to be of importance and successful as well, which also connects in parallel comparison I DON’T CARE IF YOU KEEP DIGGING YOUR OWN GRAVE OR WASTING YOURSELF SO PLEASE CONTINUE LIVING LIKE THAT Suga is indicating to the jealous, belittling and hating, whom waste their limited time on this Earth to do such things to him. “Digging your own grave” referring to the end of their lives, in which they will have nothing accomplished or did not have time to live their life as they are too busy trying to tear down his. It is a general warning against having that personality to make them aware. The thing though, he doesn’t care. As stated by the first line; “I don’t care if you keep Digging your own grave or wasting yourself So please continue living like that> This is interesting as though he mentions this lifestyle, he states he pays no mind on it and doesn’t waste his time thinking about it, which could be another signal for them to stop, playing their actions off as even more pointless as it does not affect him. It also resonates his persona of “swag” as often called, also in the flow of the track. The last line “So please continue living like that,” is hard to tell if he is being sardonic or not. You can not clearly sense sarcasm, but it could be a final word to be wary of their actions, finishing with sarcasm to help get the message further across. If not, it is simply a point to the first line. He doesn’t care. Simple, also ending the verse with a stance of calm defiance and proof that they’re efforts are only useless and a waste of time. DON’T TOUCH ME, DON’T EVEN PUT YOUR HAND ON ME YOU MIGHT END UP IN A COFFIN IF YOU KEEP FOOLING AROUND SLOPPILY The more obvious and literal account on this is that Min Yoongi, [Suga] [Agust D], is warning rivals, or otherwise jealous people who harbour negative feelings against him, commit to these emotions and attempt to lash out at him, hurt him, or provoke him, that he won’t allow it, and they’ll do something that will end up with them seriously injured, wounded, or dead. Not necessarily by his hand, as it could indicate by accident as they “fool around”, either by the attempt of provoking Suga or trying to best him. It is highly unlikely he is actually sending out barely subtle death threats, so the answer could lean towards the latter. The more interpretive one is that it refers to a previous line; “Digging your own grave or wasting yourself So please continue living like that” And it virtually points to the same thing: they are wasting their life by trying to belittle or beat him, and that he doesn’t care either way. I'll develop "724148" in the next comment.

Hi Chalfant! I am loving your reactions to his mixtape so far! 'Give it to me is my jam! Agust D '724148' is a combination of the two bus lines Suga used to ride from his high schools: bus #724 to Gangbuk high school in Daegu and bus #418 to Apgujeong high in Seoul - after he moved to Seoul. 💜

All I can say at this point is I am so glad Suga made it through his perseverance and passion. BTS was lucky to have his talent, and he was fortunate to be surrounded by such positive and hardworking members who frankly adore him! Nowadays, he is so content and confident in who he is. Financial security has really lifted a weight from his shoulders. He has a lot of good music in store because he truly has the soul of an artist, constantly learning and pushing the boundaries.
