About twenty kilometers south from Equator line and five or six kilometers from Atlantic Ocean beaches, in an unprotected area of the Gabonese forest, Michel Guiss DJOMOU, Anne-Marie and Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE have placed along a track, large mirrors (240cm x 120cm) with front each of them several trap cameras to shoot from different angles, behavior of wild animals face their reflection. This trail through a forest is a boon for animals. It allows for easier growth than in the forest undergrowth impeded by creepers, brambles, bushes and dead trees. Implantation of some of these mirrors along a trail optimizes number of animal movements before them. To monitor the wildlife's activity, they have also set up cameras along this trail.
In the wild, female elephants restart ovulating after a gestation period of 22 months followed by a period of breastfeeding lasting up to four years. Thus elephants are the most unfortunate males in mammal species because on average they have sexual intercourse only every 4/5 years. During these long periods of sexual abstinence, any pheromone in close resemblance to that of a female elephant in heat, the slightest vision of a female and even maybe, any sexual thought, triggers an erection. This explains why our trap cameras have repeatedly filmed male elephants walking with an erection in daytime or at night. The elephant's penis is fitted with autonomous movements that allow it to enter the vulva of the females, although facing towards the ground. Once in the vagina its movements replace the movement of the male elephant body, not easy in an animal of such weight

A une vingtaine de kilomètres au sud de la ligne de l'Equateur et à cinq ou six kilomètres des plages de l'Océan Atlantique, dans une zone non protégée de la forêt gabonaise, Michel Guiss DJOMOU, Anne-Marie et Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE ont placé le long d'une piste, de grands miroirs (240cm x 120cm) avec devant chacun d'eux plusieurs pièges photographiques pour filmer sous différents angles, le comportement des animaux sauvages face à leur reflet. Ce sentier traversant cette forêt est une aubaine pour les animaux. Il permet une progression plus facile que dans le sous-bois de la forêt elle-même, entravé par les lianes, les ronces, les buissons et les arbres morts. L'implantation de certains de ces miroirs le long d'un sentier permet d'optimiser le nombre de passages des animaux devant eux. Pour suivre l'activité de la faune, ils ont également installé des caméras le long de ce sentier.
Dans le monde animal, les éléphantes ne retrouvent leurs ovulations qu’après une gestation d’une durée de 22 mois suivie d’une période d’allaitement pouvant durer jusqu’à quatre ans. Ainsi les éléphants sont les mâles les plus malheureux chez les mammifères car en moyenne ils n’ont droit à des rapports sexuels que tous les 4/5 ans : Pendant ces longues périodes d’abstinence sexuelle, la moindre phéromone voisine de celles d’une éléphante en chaleur, la moindre vision d’une femelle et peut-être la moindre pensée sexuelle, déclenche une érection chez eux. Cela explique la raison pour laquelle nos caméras pièges placées dans la forêt de Nyonié près de l’équateur au Gabon, ont à maintes reprises filmé des mâles marchant en érection dans la forêt et cela aussi bien de jour que de nuit. Le pénis de l’éléphant est doté de mouvements autonomes permettant de s’introduire dans la vulve des femelles bien qu’orientée vers le sol. Une fois dans le vagin ses mouvements remplacent le mouvement du corps du mâle éléphant, peu aisé chez un animal de ce poids.

Luego hacemos la edición de los videos y escribimos una larga descripción en inglés que no es nuestra lengua materna y los ponemos en línea para mostrar la belleza de la fauna gabonesa, hablar de los cazadores furtivos, mostrar cómo los elefantes que han logrado escapar de una trampa de alambre, tratar el corte profundo hecho por esta trampa, mostrar cómo los elefantes recogen mangos, el reconocimiento de sí mismos en los espejos que no es innato tanto entre los humanos como entre los primates y otros mamíferos y así sucesivamente...
