Description ### EXPLANATION on this video TO READ ABSOLUTELY ###
Descrição ### EXPLICAÇÃO neste vídeo PARA LER ABSOLUTAMENTE ###
In gorillas as in humans, self-recognition in a mirror is not innate. It is the result of the more comfortable training in the mirror at home among young humans in the company of their parents who have done this training and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. To do this, one must be exposed to one's reflection many times and examine it quietly: one's face, body and the gestures (attitudes) it copies.
Case of gorilla babies: In front of a mirror, they are happy to discover a new playmate who takes pleasure in copying exactly every one of their own moves. They are very inquisitive exactly like human babies.
Case of a female gorilla: In front of a mirror, she sees a female she has never seen before, a stranger? (her reflection): A new female for her husband, the silverback (harem chief). Such are the male/female relationships in gorillas. So, she doesn't know jealousy and she can quietly stay in front of her reflection and do her apprenticeship in the mirror which will allow her to recognize herself in her reflection.
While mirror training can be “successful in blackback gorillas” (females, teenagers and children), in case of a silverback gorilla: Faced with the image of a silver back gorilla he has never seen before (himself), having penetrated his domain to stole some of his females, his only goal is to scare this intruder out of his domain. Peaceful, he avoids looking straight into the eyes, sign of invitation to fight in these primates, he glances at his reflection out of the corner of his eye. In bipedal position to show his corpulence, by raising a cloud of dust, by lateral charges and very powerful and loud slaps on the ground, he tries to intimidate and push away this reflection which, strangely, adopts the same attitudes as his own. Moreover, this stranger disappears when he is no longer in front of the mirror. Avoiding looking straight into the eyes of his reflection, he cannot learn the mirror. So, his mirror training is compromised!
----------------------

*Your feedback on my videos encourages us to pursue our overwhelming and somewhat dangerous passion. It is a great reward for my wife Anne-Marie, my friend Michel and me. As you may have noticed we are not comfortably sitting in our armchairs, to publish without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. But we maintain our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. Then we do the editing of the videos and write a long description in English which is not our native language (french) and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on... and answer to numerous comments posted on my channel* It's a choice.. May I suggest you some of my 170 home-made videos from my channel which have never been recommended by KZbin and which unfortunately have a very small number of views even though they are very instructive such as: First mud bath of an cute new born elephant with her mom and aunts: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKHNYomcoLN9iZY Fresh Water from Creeks triggers the urge to urinate in wild mammals: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ep3YenSvbNBjopo Can an elephant survive without half of its trunk lost in a poacher's wire snare? kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6CcmIqfbdWNp6c Before buying ivory jewellery or carved ivory objects: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJPYhZ1tpbOpfq8 and unfortunately there are many others in this case! Some young gorillas give us the impression that they have understood the properties of the mirror as they admire themselves beating their chest with their two hands as their father would do to ward off an aggressor. Or perhaps their self recognition in the mirror is not as advanced as their behaviour suggests. In young gorillas the act of beating one’s chest with one’s hands can be an invitation to play (Dr. Liz Williamson, Great Ape Section Coordinator of the IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group).

Data is better, but intuition (paired with observation…and a human that isn’t in the chimp IQ range) is great too. And mine tells me he knows it’s him and he’s doing it for fun and possibly practicing just like a teenage boy would practice looking cool or tough in the mirror for when he sees the ladies or rivals (enemies as they’re know to humans).

*After reading many comments asking for the removal of these cruel mirrors, I decided to publish this video with a title in response to these many requests.* *If the presence of my mirrors can disturb some species in the jungle, quickly many of them get habituated to it and even take pleasure to observe their reflection in my mirrors. They are not kept on a leash like dogs with a master pulling on them when they want to sniff a good smell, nor always like dogs or cats, locked up in flats with cupboard doors covered with large mirrors. They are not kept for life in pens or cages, with the only distraction being watching human visitors stuck behind their fences or bars, and eating for survival food they have neither picked up nor hunted, but simply in a bowl slipped under the bars of their pen!* *Here in Nyonié, wild animals can go to these mirrors, as they wish, and stay in front of them for as long as they wish. No food is placed by humans next to the mirrors to attract them. The presence of my mirrors does not make life in the jungle any more cruel than it already is without them: The way these territorial and dominate animals are reacting to their own reflection is no different from how they would act towards a rival. They constantly encounter other opponents in the forest. And these opponents (or prey) have real claws, fangs, tusks and horns to defend themselves and shed blood. They also have to fight each other within their own family, herd or pride for status and territory or for access to food, females, and may die in these encounters.* *To date, none of the animals that have encountered our mirrors have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), none retreated to call a therapist to say they've been emotionally traumatized by their strange confrontation.* Don't forget to read the description attached to each of our 170 videos published on our channel kzbin.infovideos

*In a sub-group of chimpanzees (25/40 individuals), there are several silverbacks (alpha males or dominant males) who must constantly justify their alpha male status to the females and be aggressive towards adolescent challengers. Females (not wives) are available to the dominant males. The structure of the sub-group is not stable as it may split or merge with other groups. All these chimpanzees constitute a community.* *Chimpanzees are belligerent monkeys. They are omnivorous. They eat the meat of small antelopes, porcupines, palm rats and also small monkeys.* *In a gorilla group (10/12 individuals) there is the chief (the silverback) and his harem (3 to 5 females that he doesn't share with other males, so his own wives) and their descendants (the blackbacks). He must protect his group and his authority is not challenged except rarely by one of his teenage sons, who usually leaves his birth family to create his own group by attracting natives females from other groups. Gorillas are peaceful great apes. They are frugivorous herbivores and insectivorous. They dont eat the flesh!* Check out more of my 170 homemade videos from my channel and don't forget to read the description attached to each of them, you will find very interesting information: kzbin.infovideos Enjoy

We wanted to thank Gabon, which has welcomed our family for more than 35 years (in the retail sector), to show on KZbin the diversity of the fauna of this beautiful country and to make Internet users want to visit it. Our first videos posted on our KZbin channel essentially showed wildlife "passing" in front of the lenses of our trap cameras equipped with motion detectors: The passage of an elephant in front of the objective of a trap for about twenty seconds is not particularly interesting. On the other hand, a video of young elephants playing in a river while adults are quenching their thirst is much more enjoyable to watch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aompmIWhiMaYitU Elephant calves have fun during a creek crossing (Gabon jungle). To find such "spots" it is advisable to get further away from the path used by the few 4x4 vehicles of Nyonié, to go deeper into the forest and to walk in the beds of creeks and small rivers. This is not safe, especially when you are old. To progress more easily in the forest, animals use this off-road trail, without vines, bushes, brambles and trees mixed on the ground because of the very numerous tornadoes in this region on the Equator line. We came up with the idea of placing very large mirrors at the end of a long straight line of an off-road track to catch their eyes and "block" them in front of their image. We have also placed other mirrors under trees where numerous animals appreciate the fruits. At other locations in the middle of the forest it would have been very lucky for animals to meet their reflection. Our use of mirrors has been of great interest to primatologists, including members of the PSG, not the Paris Saint Germain football club, but the Primate Specialists Group, who have only been able to study self-recognition in a mirror in great apes in laboratories with captive animals or animals born in captivity, used to contact with humans. These animals did not have to search for food, defend their families against other congeners and predators, sometimes imitating humans, and therefore had very different distorted behaviours from primates living in complete freedom with their group or family in a remote area of Gabon's forest. Our cameras have highlighted a very particular behaviour among chimpanzees in the Nyonié region and resulted in a scientific publication, "Reflections in rainforest mirrors facilitate behavioral observations of wild chimpanzees Primates n°58 2017-01". On our two following videos this behavior is filmed: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqWweJaCp7ZkaKc (Rump-Rump Rubbing in Chimpanzees = anti-stress effect? A social behavior ever observed previously) and kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqfPmoekf5yCotE (scared chimps reassure themselves with pseudo-copulation and rump-to-rump contacts front of mirror). This is how, incidentally in wild animals, we discovered and became interested in their self-recognition in our large mirrors. Keep watching my homemade videos (170 pieces) that I put online on my channel and read the description attached to each one of them. You will know very interesting explanations about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle and share its link with your friends: kzbin.infovideos

*Your compliment is a great reward for my wife Anne-Marie, my friend Michel and me.* We are not comfortably sitting in our armchairs, to publish without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. A comment like yours cheers us up after my wife and I have spent days alone in the Gabonese forest for the maintenance of our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, batteries, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. *Then, back in the camp, we do the editing with for each video a description in English which is not our native language, respond to comments from viewers and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on...* 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗵𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁: My wife and I are neither scientists nor veterinarians nor primatologists nor photographers. *We wanted to thank Gabon, which has welcomed our family for more than 35 years (in the retail sector), to show on KZbin the diversity of the fauna of this beautiful country and to make Internet users want to visit it.* Our first videos posted on our KZbin channel essentially showed wildlife "passing" in front of the lenses of our trap cameras equipped with motion detectors: The passage of an elephant in front of the objective of a trap for about twenty seconds is not particularly interesting. This is not safe, especially when you are old and becoming partially deaf. Fortunately my wife has a very accurate hearing. This is how, incidentally in wild animals, we discovered and became interested in their self-recognition in our large full length mirrors. Keep watching my homemade videos (180 pieces) that I put online on my channel and read the description attached to each one of them. You will know very interesting explanations about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle and share its link with your friends: kzbin.infovideos

Why do gorillas pound their chest
@XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES 2 жыл бұрын
*Chest-beating with cupped hands is one of the different steps of warning before charge in Silverback Gorillas including rising up in a bipedal position, beating his chest with fists or with cupped hands, sideways runs in a bipedal and then quadriped position, heavy loud slaps on the ground with the palms of the hands (The cupped hands are slapped forcefully against the chest wall in rapid alternation. That requires extreme precision to catch the air just right each time. It is not just hitting its chest, it is similar to making a very loud clap by perfectly catching the air between two cupped hands. The hands curve and trap a cushion of air producing at each percussion a hollow sound).* *Chest-beating in Silverback Gorillas is an intimidation strategy:* *_to sent a warning_* *_to scare off intruders._* *_to signal his social status, his strengh, his size (the deepness of the sounds emitted by beating, allows a rival, even at a distance of several hundred metres, to estimate his strength and his size)_* *_to attrack potential mates._* *In gorillas, children and adolescents can beat their chest to imitate their father by play or to invite another one to play (Dr. Liz Williamson, Great Ape Section Coordinator of the IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group) as in the following videos:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWS2gpdnpMSlZpI at 00:00 00:17 00:33 02:25 03:16 kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKTQhoZje8-MgJI at the end kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc at 00:38 Ground-beating or mirror-beating with cupped hands can be also an invitation to play from children and adolescents : kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc at 00:44 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWS2gpdnpMSlZpI at 02:41 Hit the “show more “ option, I attach a description with more information to each of my 170 videos published on my channel. kzbin.infovideos

how do the chimps interact with gorillas when they run into one another? Do they keep out of the way or do they become aggressive?
@XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES 2 жыл бұрын
In the remote forest of Gabon where we have set up our mirrors, there is a community of chimpanzees made up of sub-groups and a group of gorillas. There is no competition for food, fruits and stems as marantaceae, being numerous in all seasons. To avoid conflict, these great apes avoid meeting each other. For example, when a chimpanzee subgroup is facing a mirror, the silverback gorilla stays with his group away from the mirror to wait for the chimpanzee subgroup to leave and then the gorillas take their places in front of the mirror. Please watch more of my 170 videos posted on my channel and read the description attached to each one. I am really interested. If we found that gorilla recognizes its image in the mirror, is it possible to use this fact to learn gorila something? Such as if place gorila and human in the same room with the mirror and human try to learn gorilla something may be - walking. Will the gorilla try to recieve the feedback of how it walks from the mirror and compares it to human walk ?
@XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES Жыл бұрын
In animals as in humans, self-recognition in a mirror is not innate. It is the result of mirror training, easier at home for young humans with the help of their parents who have done this training and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. Among primates, elephants and felids, in the insecurity of the jungle learning with his parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals. To do this, a gorilla must be exposed to one's reflection many times and examine it quietly: one's face, body and the gestures (attitudes) it copies. While mirror training can be *successful in blackback gorillas* (females, adolescents and children), it is *compromised among silverbacks* where looking another silverback, or its reflection, straight in the eyes is a sign of defiance, an attitude that these peaceful males avoid. Please read the description attached to each of my 180 videos published on my KZbin channel you will know very interesting informations about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle kzbin.infovideos

*If a synthetic mirror is perfectly usable in an apartment, on the other hand in the forest the different points of light created by the sun through the canopy, produce false reflections in the mirrors. Synthetic mirrors and reflective adhesive tapes do not stay flat in bad weather. Reflections are therefore distorted images. So I use glass 3 mirrors (83x120x0,5cm) that I glue, with double-sided adhesive, to a 22 m/m marine plywood fixed on a wooden frame with 4 legs and 4 buttresses at the back. Watch my following videos and you will understand my explanations better:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKHIdoCKobeYh9k kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5vbqImdqtGSoq8 *I posted a video showing resistance of my mirrors to blows given by a very angry elephant. Two mirror breakages were made by great tuskers who, while inspecting a mirror's frame with their trunk, raised their heads and the extremity of one of their two long tusks hit the reflective surface hard. At the noise produced by the breaking of the mirror, not understanding what they had just done, they resumed their walk in the forest. Another one was broken by a silverback gorilla doing side charges to scare its reflection. Many primates hold lianas and branches in their hands, because this makes them feel stronger. Also this gorilla pulled behind him a long branch which, bouncing on the ground, went to break the mirror while the gorilla was running along the mirror. How do Gorillas and Chimps react to Leopards and are there any known accounts of Leopards killing them in that region?
@XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES 2 жыл бұрын
*In the area where my mirrors are placed, the main carnivore (except for poachers who avoid going there because of the presence of more than 70 trap cameras **kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHrShoBmi9OMpMk** ) is the leopard. It is a solitary animal that does not hunt in a troop. It avoids attacking solitary male elephants as well as families with children because of their power of reaction in case of attack. It avoids attacking a calf in a herd of forest buffalo because of their aggressiveness. It avoids attacking great apes (gorillas and chimpanzees) because of their cohesion and moreover it does not climb trees well and it avoids attacking mandrills because on the one hand they are in troops of 150 to 300 individuals which have very sharp teeth and climb trees very easily. . Moreover the flesh of these mammals is not very tasty except for the buffalo calf. The leopard appreciates small game such as small antelopes (blue duikers), porcupines and especially palm rats.* It should be noted that chimpanzees, frugivores, insectivorous and herbivores occasionally eat small monkeys such as the putty-nosed monkey (Cercopithecus nictitans). Thus there is a kind of statuquo between elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, mandrills, buffaloes and leopards that avoid meeting each other, all the more so because in this forest, there is no competition for food, fruits and stems as marantaceae, being numerous in all seasons. So a fight between a silverback gorilla and a leopard cannot take place. Watch my 170 other homemade videos on the channel and don't forget to read the attached description each time. As in humans, self-recognition in gorillas is also the result of learning to look in the mirror. To do this, one must be exposed to one's reflection many times and examine it quietly: one's face, body and the gestures (attitudes) it copies. While mirror training can be *successful in blackback gorillas* (females, teenagers, adolescents and children), it is *compromised among silverbacks* where looking another silverback, or its reflection, straight in the eyes is a sign of defiance, an attitude that these peaceful males avoid. In my description attached to this video, I explain that behavior in silverback gorillas and the behaviour of other members (blackbacks) of his family. This is not safe, especially when you are old and becoming partially deaf. Fortunately my wife has a very accurate hearing.
