In a case like this though it's all about time. If you charge a flat rate for these HDMI repairs, and someone comes along with a console that requires 100X the amount of work compared to an HDMI without ripped traces, it's just not worth it.
@infernaldaedra

@@roundaboutcitizen let's say you have a repair like this plus a new drive or even something really common, like the HDMI encoder and you give a quote to the customer where your barely making anything. And sometimes they say why are you ripping me off? Because they aren't interested in the repair of an Xbox just the cost vs a new one and half the time they just blatantly assume it will fail again even if your putting in a better part or stronger solder connections. And sometimes it's true the parts are hard enough to get that sometimes it's just easier to buy a new one and the use the old one for parts in the future.

More like not economically viable to repair, A whole new xbox is like 500. A set of replacement boards is like 180-220 and theoretically if things go smooth under an hour of labor for the swap. In any case it's a little more complicated than that on this particular job, this is probably not actually 100% repaired. HDMI is very sensitive to interference and parasitic capacitance. All those traces are running in little pairs for noise cancelling. I would bet good money adding a bunch of random wires has that signal out of spec. It will probably work fine for most stuff but might have issues/artifacts at 2k 240 and 4k 120. My state requires repair work to be warrantied for 90 days and the law doesn't really allow for " I can only kind fix it", This would be a no go for me too. Just not worth the time and risk of getting into a warranty quagmire if it comes back. IDK too each their own, I enjoy doing crazy stuff like this for my own purposes or like friends and family but just too much time and risk for the business. In general extensive board level re works aren't worth it until you are talking about 7-800 bucks for the board.

This is not a viable fix unfortunately, signal issues are going to appear in a couple weeks or months. Signal degradation is an issue with HDMI and usually results in HDCP failure that prevents your content from displaying properly if at all and those wires being so out of spec they just scream problems with any copy protected content. For yourself? Its a cool trick, but for a business to risk problems with the client for a out of spec "fix" like this is not worth the money or the liability trouble.

I worked in a prototype development department with a company and used to do the same thing. It was challenging working under a microscope but it was rewarding. You have to have patience and hopefully the pads are nor lifted, if not, now you have to install new pads. Some of my boards were 16 layers thick and were back planes to video routers. I used to trim off the wires by scoring the 30 gauge or smaller wire with a razor, by nicking the wire and as I would lift the pigtail it would brake off right at the score line, cleaned it than coated it. All part of the job. Nice work

@__dm__
@__dm__ Жыл бұрын
it also needs to be a specific width, specific distance away from the ground plane, and specific distance between each other, length matched with each other in the same pair, and length matched with other pairs. this repair might work, but it will be fragile with vibration (i mean, it will flop around), and will likely have worse signal integrity, which means it might not transmit the signal correctly across long hdmi cables, bad hdmi cables, and some TVs. source: I'm an electronics engineer

@alexw7260
@alexw7260 Жыл бұрын
Not having the right width, spacings, or length matching will certainly hurt the signal integrity, but the biggest issue I see is that he didn't cut the stub of the old trace off. When the signal hits the spot where he has soldered the wire, it will have two paths it can take--the old broken trace or the new wire. The part of the signal that takes the old trace will reflect off the busted end and come back to interfere with the signal that went the right way down the wire. At certain display resolutions and and refresh rates this reflected signal will destructively interfere and make the video signal completely unrecoverable. It looks like there is about half an inch of trace left hanging. If you figure the speed of light as 6" per nanosecond (typical for most PCB materials), the quarter wavelength resonance of this stub is (6 inch/nsec) / (0.5 inch) / 4 = 3 GHz. A 1080p 60 Hz display signal has a bit rate of 1.485 gigabits/second, which corresponds to a frequency of 0.7425 GHz. I would expect this to work just fine with the fix that he's done. A 4K 60 Hz display will have a bit rate of 5.94 gigabits/second, which corresponds to a frequency of 2.97 GHz, which is almost exactly the expected resonant frequency. In other words, you're screwed. If you made it this far, thanks for reading :)

Why do you not remove sections of the enamel first,so it doesn’t get all over the board?

I gotta ask. Isnt that a whole lotta mess to be left in there? Would it cause an issue later?

Always run your warranty before the year is up. They will check it for issues before sending it back. I had problems on mine on top of the existing one and everything was fixed 👌

It is difficult to do this job. I know because I’ve had to do it. I actually had to repair a multilayer board once when a component had fried and trashed the landings. I dremeled out fiberglass where the traces came up with a via. Soldered wires to the traces to the component. Used some epoxy to hold it all together. Oh and this was aboard ship on a small research vessel. We couldn’t return to port just cause the transmitter fried.

HVAC transformers have a spool of thin copper wire with enamel coating. This is perfect for bodging signal traces.

Flashback to a month ago: I got the Series X on launch, and a while in I was a dumb ass and dropped it (I always take it to my friends house on the weekends). It still worked but it was like a bad phone charger where the HDMI had to be at the perfect angle for it to work. I end up getting it repaired at a small shop in-town, they did a great job and everything was good. 2 weeks after that my friends girlfriend smacks her head into it, breaking the HDMI port again. They bought me a new one 😂

How come you don't strip the wire first? Doesn't all that enamel gunk up the trace area and solder tip?

I'm guessing given you said it's tedious work, that typically equates to expensive billing. I'm guessing they were not interested in taking on the job due to the risk of customer not paying once they get the bill. I've found alot of places try to manage expectations, take on the job then still have the customer abandon the item once they get the bill.
