Abandoned- 2 Blue stone cottages built 1890/Abandoned since 1998/What happened?

This explore I take a look at 2 Blue stone cottages that are actually 3 living spaces as one is divided in half as a double single front abode.
1890 these old places were built and from what I could find inside and talking to one neighbor they have been abandoned since 1998. Squatters used to come and go years back too the neighbor told me. Renovations and extensions have been made at some point which add to the old charms still left behind. Come and see what I found on this cool adventure in to the past :-)

the neighbor to the left seemed a little un happy that they have been left like this for over 20 years, he said the make shift fence went up a few years back as some homeless were coming and going from in there. cheers for watching :-)

What a find. I'd say someone spent a lot of money remodeling those houses perhaps not knowing there were foundation issues :-/. They all had approximatly the same corner of the house with cracks in the walls. So sad, if they had been properly investigated a person would have had a place to live and a couple of rentals. I like the mix of old and new, especially if you can successfully salvage an old home. Thanks again for sharing, I always enjoy an explore with you :-).

That first kitchen was amazing with that vaulted ceiling - so modern yet the cottages are so old! What a mad collection of awesome properties. The yellow tiles were mad lol. Great explore

Yes the third one looked quite nice, nice & spacey but more "home feeling to it- The first two looked like they were always cold and unassuming. I do like the entrance doors because of the transoms . Great video you daredevil you😁👍☮❤

The whole time you were tromping through the over grown yard all I could think was "hope he's got his snake boots on." Interesting pair of old houses. The last one looked like someone was trying to remodel it. Perhaps after they got into it, major structural problems were discovered and the house had to be condemned. That was absolutely depressing to see those homes just sitting there wasting away. So many people would love to have such a nice place to live. But yet those just sit there and rot. I loved the ceilings in the kitchens in the first two but when I seen the third house the small Loft area and that bathtub oh my goodness. That's just absolutely tragic that those are sitting there just going to waste like that. If you find out any more information about them please let us know. It did really be nice to see somebody fix them back up. I don't live in Australia but if I did I'd be interested. Especially in the third house. Good video thanks for sharing.

I did find out they are contributory heritage listed which means they are protected as part of the overall streetscape heritage so it may explain why they have not been demolished but not why the owners have not done any improvements.....perhaps ran out of interest and money. thanks for watching :-)

Like living next to a cemetery, the neighbors are really quiet. Can see the principle of high ceilings, hot air rises, transoms drafts carry it away. Some beautiful brick work there. Cheers!

Lovely places. Was quite struck by the ornate fences and exterior architecture. I notice the room sizes in most of these older homes is quite small, add a fireplace and even smaller. Neat though. Thanks for the tour! Very entertaining.

I agree it looks condemned, may have been rentals at one time. Landlord trying to fix things and got in over their heads or ran out of money. Very open and very yellow kithen in the split cottage but it did add that light happy feel compared to the front danky section lol. the second home was a work in progress it seems , loved the concept of leaving the old kitchen room as an open small court yard with the fig tree , cheers for watching :-)

Thanks Paul for the Kool ideas for my next doll house, the last one you showed us. Maybe they started fixing up when they found the foundation problem was too much to handle or they ran out of money. What a shame, bet it was nice back in the day with a big yard. And they probably planted fruit trees. Have you heard of WERID, NJ mag? I'm emailing weird stuff I know about in the Pine Barrens in Soutern New Jersey. I hope to get to meet Mark & his friend Mark who print the mag once a year it comes out each Oct. You should see some of the cool ship designed bar that's in a ship designed pub. We can drink to that😁. I GOT A BLOW UP BED!! QUEEN SIZED!! Someone messed up, it was soposed to be a 'single', duh! It sure is better than sleeping on just a box spring. The way it is now if you go to the edge you can roll off !! Ha, ha, ha...How's that for an 'alarm clock'? At the Fort in Alabama I was visiting a fellow soldier & I was in the top bunk in the barracks. She forgot to tell me about the cannon going off in the court yard at 6 am, BOOM!! Woke me up & the next thing I know I'm on the floor!! We laughed our heads off, but from then on the next 3 nights 'SHE' slept on the top bunk. Got to go try to redo the bed room to fit the huge (I think it's bigger than a king sized bed, it's alittle wider than 5 ft & it's over 4 foot deep.) I'll try to figure something out. What odd places. The old original cottages with the 70s style kitchens seem so mismatched as to be almost comical. The second home seems to have had much more extensive renovations which would indicate to me that the owners had considerably more money to spend. It also seems to have been a business in its final days. Bluestone is so beautiful. There are many buildings near my original hometown built with that material. Limestone is the other major stone used there. Thanks for finding and sharing these homes.

Hi Lladylobo1 yep that bright yellow add on on in the double cottage was a contrast to the original part haha, almost looked like a generic upgrade from a catalogue. Blue stone is considered wealthy building material here as you said and lime and sandstone. thanks for watching :-)

This is the neighborhood they should use for urban renewal. The old overgrown dangerous places. Questions... Why do the old homes have ceilings ten feet high. Slot of heat and space left to waste.

Hi Mari, well without giving away too much about this neighborhood it is actually considered one of the more old well preserved character ones but for some reason these sit all run down and for a long time, but this also proves that the council cannot force any changes on these places as they are part of the streetscape heritage. he reason old homes were built with high ceiling is to let the hot summer air rise and and vent outside through natural vaccume draft. When electricity and air con cam in, many homes lowered the ceiling to reverse the effect and also to accommodate the vents inside the ceilings :-)

I liked the second more than the first. They both look fixable. I expect they have been bought by a developer and will meet with the wrecking ball soon. Its strange how they have both been abandoned for a long time. Dust that thick on those countertops doesn't happen over night. Most people would have them rented out to cover the rates and have some cashflow.

wow, indigo, these were so fun. someone (maybe a specific architectural co.?) had a great idea! a really modern (well, 70's) update while keeping some of the original old charms! i loved these. i hate to see them go. things like lofts and porthole windows were the BOMB around the 70's. i can picture the kids coming home from school & watching the brady bunch or partridge family. made me nostalgic for my own growing up years! indigo, will they condemn houses just for the large cracks like we saw? can that not be fixed? anyway, thanks again for a really fun explore. i really love your urbex finds & enjoy the adventures you share. love from the states, cindy

The 666 charcoal stuff freaked me out with the childs' crib...I guess these houses were haunted in spite of their charm? 1890 was the year of the Great Reset, many evil forces were at play back then (as well as now in 2021) Too bad, you didn't go into the paperstuff on the floor... but thanks for sharing👍😘🌻

This might be a case of someone spending (especially on the last house) serious $$$ on these properties only to be told that they need to spend bucket loads more on costly structural integrity work. In the last house, the bathroom you can see where the shower alcove has yet to have the glass fitted (there is no broken glass to be seen) as well as a new unfitted tile next to the spa. There is also the lack of taps installed, although these are usually the first to go in an abandoned property. The time period suggests that at this time in the early-mid noughties, Adelaide went through a lengthy very serious drought. Given the ages of these quite beautiful houses combined with Adelaide's notorious clay based soils major cracking has fractured the foundations. This may be why view holes have been cut into the floorboards. My theory is the owners went belly up , and the G.F.C. at that time would have been their death-knell. Such a pity given our current housing crisis. Great opening music by the way. Who's the artist?

Hi Gen I think you may be right, looks as though they gave up on the left house before finished. oo much money as you say and other crack appearing..I have found out these are contributory items to the local streetscape heritage which explains why nothing has been done regards demolition. Rules are about to change on contributory items so they may meet a nasty fate by developers soon. Cheers for watching again Gene :-)

The additions seem to be well done but they take away from the original design in my opinion. I don't like the open concept floor plan which is most popular in the States currently. Nothing but a fad. A bad one at that. The third home was my favorite. The brick work and other architectural elements made it work. The housing industry here on the coast is out of control. There are so many jobs available it has become impossible to fill them. My question, why? I have been briefed on the housing explosion in Australia. Is it really needed? So much history destroyed under the guise of progress. Sad! Australia has given the word some really remarkable people. Michael Hutchence of INXS was the last great rock star. They ruined the first one, when they cut it down the middle. Very plain, but would have been really big, had they not cut it in half. I really liked the second one, I liked the loft, alot. Bonus bedroom. My oldest daughter had a crib like that, early 80s. That room could have been used as an office, weight room, sewing, all combined. Could have had 4 bedrooms, & that bonus room. Nice. Really enjoyed the decay & creepiness. Thanks for another great explore.

I’m watching from Queens 👸 NY USA 🇺🇸. You’re brave. Those abandoned properties are located next to residences. The fruit 🍎 tree 🌲 at 19:40 looks like a loaded pear 🍐 tree 🌲. The stone is so gorgeous. Surely if these get demolished, the stone is saved? That atomic yellow tile in kitchens and baths is hideous! The remodeled portion likely dates to mid-1970's. My family's home in the States was remodeled in this style at that time. Had the glazed brick floor too.

The first house looks similar to the house I grew up in Northcote Vic, Cost $8000 back then, now worth $1.8 mil. It's Also Heratage Listed. Great Video again. May be like you said condemned, or families fighting over a deceased estate, blood sucking lawyers would be happy. I'm really amazed the last home with the Graffiti and paper's that the lights were not smashed. Snakes, spiders= Huntsman 😰cobwebs omg be careful D. Wouldn't it be great to see these homes back in the day. If they were my neighbours I would complain to the council about the grass, overgrown trees, fire hazard. We can do that in Victoria. Summer is coming here in Australia o/s viewer's if you lived through our summer's you would understand Bushfires can wipe our entire suburbs/towns.

The tree is a Feijoa Tree and the fruit is edible and sweet called Feijoas. Often found in early European neighbourhoods around Adelaide, such as Felixstow, Grange etc.

Hi Paul. I loved this one. I think a 70’s remodel. I really liked the second one. Must have been beautiful in its day. The large windows are so beautiful and the high ceilings give them such an airy feel. The kitchens were very nice as was that huge bathroom with the jacuzzi. The charcoal drawings made me think maybe an artist lived there. They did look artsy with the groovy round windows and loft. Great piano at the beginning. I think condemned from structural damage and just had to abandon them. Love to Nicolai! 😻. How are you getting on with his Santa suit? Christmas is in like 71 days so I’m looking forward to seeing him. 😻 Was your photographer friend with you and what is his Instagram again? A lot of opportunities for great photos in this one. Hi Nancy yes the second home was my fav but it seemed they did not quite get it finished unfortunately, maybe ran out of money. Defo artsy people in the as there were interior decor books everywhere too. I will have to find a santa outfit for Nicolai lol :-) Na Michael was not with me on this one but I got a lot of pics and I will take him back to this place also . Interesting places, wonder if it was one family that occupied all three .They did some decent renovations but it seems like they may have run out of money. If it's a foreclosure I am stunned the bank hasnt finished it and sold it. I liked all three places, although not really my style. Thanks for sharing.
