I read people in the comments saying "don't have accents" Everyone has an accent. However, Ohio's accent is much closer to the general idea of American accents. It sounds less regionally specific. So it can be understood why people think Ohioans "don't have" accents.

I live in Ohio but my dads side is british and my mother is more southern. I have a generic Ohioan accent but when I get angry or I say something naturally it becomes either southern or british. What I mean by say something naturally is when I talk fast or say something before I think. It usually will be the same but one word or two in the sentence will go into a british or southern accent.

There are very broad accents in ohio. I live in athens and we have a more Southern accent, not as bad as lets say Kentucky or West Virginia but very noticeable. Then you have people from up north where they really let the a's and o's be heard lol. Can always tell when someone is up near Cleveland or something.

If this was an English word I’d let it slide but since it’s Japanese & they specifically say “ra” I really don’t like it 😂 if it was “ray”, based on Japanese pronunciations, it would be spelt “reimon” or in Hiragana “れいもん” & not “ramen” or in Hiragana “らめん”

I'm from NE Ohio and I pronounce pretty much everything the same as you. Even when you were saying you pronounce something one way in one instance and differently in another. I pronounce acetone like you as well. I knew the sun shower thing. I say "you guys" or "guys" in a unisex sort of way when addressing a group. I do pronounce the "u" more in coupon. And I pronounce the "oo" in roof the same as I would in room. Everyone I know around me says pop, not soda. :)

I know a girl who moved here from Wisconsin and I said it like that in front of her and she totally jumped all over it and I had to say, "No, no. That's not an Ohio thing. I just say it like that sometimes when I'm in a playful mood for some reason." But maybe it is an Ohio thing. LOL

Ohio has multiple accents due to the proximity to other accents. A person from Marietta or Portsmouth is going to sound very different from someone from the northern or western part of the state. I'm guessing you're from the Cleveland area but could be mistaken. However, people from Dayton, Lima, Cincinnati and Columbus tend to sound distinctly different from people from Toledo, Cleveland, Akron, or Youngstown. Dayton and Lima also seem to have their own things going accent-wise I have noticed. I was born in Columbus but grew up in west-central Ohio, so I probably have the Western Ohio accent as a general rule, but I've also lived in Toledo and sometimes catch myself picking up some of the north-central. I was also an over the road truck driver for 3½ years and have caught myself picking up tendencies from other parts of the country where I ran frequently. I used to fake an Australian accent when making deliveries to one place in Meridian, Mississippi, because the receiving clerks tended to be hostile to anyone who sounded like a Northerner, and I can fake that better than a Southeastern U.S. accent (besides, it's further south anyway!). Once when I was in Rome, New York, someone asked me if I had an accent and I said "I probably do here." THINGS I'VE NOTICED: Nearly everyone I know from Ohio calls it POP not soda (unless they're from Youngstown, and for some reason nearly everyone I know from there calls it soda.) For: Tends to sound like "fur" or "fer" coming out of an Ohioan. I'm totally guilty of this. Can (as in "you can") tends to come out as "ken" without meaning to. Also totally guilty. Lima: The I is pronounced like "pie" not "key". It's LIE-mah not LEE-mah. (I'm told the I is also pronounced the same in Milan, up by Sandusky.) Bellefontaine: It's pronounced "bell fountain" NOT "bella font ayne" Cincinnati: Some people from Ohio do pronounce the I at the end "uh" but everyone I know under the age of 80 pronounces it "ee". Wash: This can literally vary even within communities and households. I say WASH but my mom tends to say WARSH. Groceries: This can also vary. I call them GROSS-eries but nearly everyone where I grew up calls them GROSH-eries. Ramen: I call it RAH-men but a lot of people where I grew up call it RAY-men. However, tomato is still to-MAY-to in Ohio (and probably most places where American English is spoken.)

Dude I thought Ohio didn’t have an accent. I’m from Wash/Oregon But my second home town Is Ohio because my family has gone there twice a year since I was born. Wash/Ore definitely has a dead accent. Very plain but its my accent sooooo... So I made a friend from Cleveland, but met him online. The first time he called me I FREAKED because he has a THICK Ohio Accent. I then realized my Uncle has a think accent too because he sounds like a young version of my uncle. I never noticed the accent till he called. You guys say “E-Ach-sent” not “Ak-sent” It’s hilarious now that I noticed it. 😂

Ohio is one of the few states depending on which part you are from determines your accent. There is a big difference between northern Ohio central Ohio and southern Ohio. The more northern you get you get a softer more enunciated accent. Central Ohio start to get neutral and Southern Ohio definitely has more of a twang similar to KY probably because its so close. So more north Canadian accent more southern more KY.

Ohio and California sound very similar to me, except that Ohioans are less likely to say "like" every other word and we call it pop, not soda like Californians do. I wonder if it's due to the mass influx of people from the Midwest during the gold rush and also during the golden age of Hollywood.

I am a Canadian from Southern Ontario and you sound very much like someone from the Toronto area. Except most of us here say roof and not ruff. Rahmen sounds more foreign and exotic- so it sounds better than raymen. Raymen sounds like a person's name, right?

Hey Sarah! I went to high school many years ago in a small town called Liberty Center. My parents taught at Jones Junior High in Toledo. My brother graduated from Start High School. Thanks for doing this. It's a little like coming home.

I feel like I almost break it into three syllables - like Or-eh-gaun. I went to high school in that city. :) From what I remember, most people around there say it the way I do. And, thanks for sharing my video.

From Troy, to now Jackson definitely a Ohio accent. A few variations from what I always said, I called my grandparents “Mamaw and Papaw” and to go with the carbonated drink, it’s most definitely POP

I agree with that. Best comment on this so far. Keeping it real and positive. I agree with her pronunciation of the word "Data". I do the same thing with that one, simply because I was taught phonics in the Old School, where Vowel-Consonant-Vowel, the first vowel is a Long one.Rather than the pronunciation "datt'a". But different people from different parts of the country may have learned differently. But I like Sarah, she is very beautiful, and professional. Mike in Fresno, Ca.
