This was great! I have a 2013 Malibu with a very similar system and it's helpful to see the operation. From what it seems at the end, if there is an issue with the battery pack, the car will default to disabling the high voltage "hybrid" side of the system and would run the car as a conventional system.
@jrmurillo1104Күн бұрын
I don't think so, if there's anything wrong with the hybrid system, the car simply will not run
@JT-lq4ydКүн бұрын
@jrmurillo1104 The system here is not full hybrid. This is what is called Mild hybrid. It assists the gas engine in certain conditions and runs all 12v electronics from the high voltage battery.

Didn't know you could run battery cables from one car to another for programming. Is it clean power? Any possible issues?
@fredsalter191518 сағат бұрын
Current is coming strait from the Ford's battery, so the power is clean (provided the Ford's alternator is ok).

The client could not afford a new alternator but the shop replaced every other component of the electrical system, so where is the cost savings? Parts cannon to the rescue.
@scotts412512 сағат бұрын
Yup. Low income client took his car to discount part changers. Those guys shouldn't even be in business. How do you throw a part in without knowing it needs to be programmed?
@imfloridano5448Күн бұрын
Having to reprogram modules for hybrid and EV vehicles is ridiculous. Majority of the modules not part of the main ECU should be plug and play. Makes it harder for the DIY'er to repair their vehicles. All schematics and wiring diagrams should automatically come with the vehicles on a flash drive. Explanations about the function should be written into the wiring diagrams

A majority of hybrids don't have or need an alternator
@jrmurillo1104Күн бұрын
Its an alternator/motor/starter as he mentions it in the video. The 12V battery need s an alternator to keep the charge, so that electric motor funciona as an alternator
@DylanL69Күн бұрын
@jrmurillo1104 most hybrids use a power inverter to drop the voltage down to about 14 volts to charge the battery so they don't need one

For all of those who are hell bent about "EV" vehicles as being the answer to inexpensive transportation, here's one example of what can take out all of the savings in ownership with just one visit to a mechanic. Two control modules, alternator, the 12v battery and likely the main battery pack. Up to this point, the owner of this vehicle probably experienced some savings on fuel however, now comes the expense. Not sure what those items cost but it's well into a few hundred dollars plus labor. The battery pack would best be replaced new vs. used since they are a wear item and you wouldn't want to get a used battery pack that is on its final life only to repeat this issue in the near future. Agreed, if mechanics like Eric want to remain in business, they must adapt to the needs of the EV and Hybrid vehicles with superior education and test equipment as well as known best practices to make sound diagnosis. The shop who referred this to Eric possibly didn't need 3 alternators and/or those control modules because they weren't totally familiar with the Hybrid system. To add more difficulty to this repair is a customer who has limited funds to allow for a full legitimate repair. BTW, very sweet to see a mechanic who has some quality jumper cables ! And, long ones to satisfy almost any situation !

The problem is not only limited to EV's. SMA just posted a video about a KIA (ICE) van that had an OEM backup camera put the vehicle into limp mode. The backup camera shorted to ground and because its connected to the vehicle's network bus, it took down the whole system.
@Garth201110 сағат бұрын
@@bobsoft Saw that one too. Those managing engineers of today have near vision mostly.

@@Garth2011 I think the manufacturers want to cut out the aftermarket parts and repairs. Much like they tried to do when OBD first came out.
