Where did this this massive fear mongering of sexism in gaming come from? As long as I can remember, if a girl played video games, it was a very desirable trait among all of my male friends. If a girl plays online, it's very likely people will want to help her out and team up with her, or give her special items, etc. My first girlfriend actually loved games just as much as I did and it was great, she'd been a hardcore gamer for years and hadn't faced much opposition for it. There's the occasional idiot on Xbox live who says "get back in the kitchen" but we all know they're just.....well, idiots, or bad trolls. Still, getting called a "small-dick faggot who can't get pussy who lives in his mom's basement" isn't all too nice either, but I just can't take those people seriously.

I don't get it either, to be honest. I suspect for most of these women who are finding strife online, it's less to do with their gender and a whole heck of a lot more to do with their attitude. I'm not victim-blaming (oh yay, another fashionably tumblry term, how grand) but... Honestly, when you approach a situation already in the mindset that you're gonna get shat on, and you react like you're about to get shat on even when people originally had no intention to shit on you... ... Well, eventually, you're going to find shit. One way or another. Even if you have to dig for it. Isn't it just LOVELY how these people are proposing we teach children to prematurely look for shit and be uber defensive about it? Why, I don't see a problem with this at all! This can't possibly lead to manufactured conflicts! /end sarcasm

Thank you guys for the great comments. This just never seemed like the epidemic they're painting it as currently. I've been following this whole fiasco for a few months now and wondered, was Anita the mother of this whole sexism in gaming hysteria? Or was there some talk of this before her? Because no one I know brought this issue up, ever; and I can definitely see the money in it for people like Anita. Girl gamers that I know never made this big of a deal about it, a lot of them just didn't care. Often, harassment in games is just plain old harassment, not a gendered issue.
@Theosis1010 жыл бұрын
Vault Boy® There may have been some talk about it before, but Anita was the one who popularized it. She did a series of videos called Troupes vs girls(or women i cant remember) and took everything out of context. From there people started to find out she was full of shit, and even exposed her as such. However she used this as an excuse to say she is being attacked over the interwebs. 1000 intelligent, insightful, polite comments/criticisms to the 1 troll saying they will find her at her house and stab her in the butt. Yet somehow that 1 in a 1000 comments is the norm for her, and she has to fear for her life because of the threat made to her ass. From there she takes her handful of troll comments and trouts them out on stage like a circus act to garner even more sympathy and money from her now devote audience. "Here it is, proof of the hate of women in gaming/interwebs" Despite the fact that men face just as much trolling as women, its only a problem when it happens to women. Also men apparently dont need to fear for their life when they get threatened, however any woman who is even remotely threatened needs to call the police.

Theosis10 I do remember seeing that video where she took the Hitman gameplay out of context and well as a handful of cherry picked instances. I definitely thought that was quite ridiculous and dishonest. The more I find out about this woman the more I just shake my head lol

Some females (not even feminists) are hurting their own gender. I am OBSESSED with DOTA 2. I've been playing it since 2006 when it was merely a mod from Warcraft. I've never heard any male saying "DOTA is a male game". They even invited me to play with them. They actually love to have a female on their team and would say things like "the girls in our team are badass!" and stuff like that. I used to have LAN parties with my male classmates and now I still play online with my male friends. The only times I heard "DOTA is a male game" were from females. When they hear me and the guys discussing strategies, some females would go along the lines of "You play it? Isn't that a game for guys? It looks complicated." I don't know where they get ideas like that from. I'm sure this is not from the male gamers.

***** I will only say this... If we don't think the media, books, movies, music, video games affect behavior... why do we have so many children's books like "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"? Isn't much of childhood literature and movies dedicated to affecting the attitudes and behaviors of children? I'm not saying they do or don't influence behavior... I'm just saying we seem to think they will, or there wouldn't be so many preachy stories directed at children.
@Valosken10 жыл бұрын
Hiraghm They do affect behaviour in children, which may be why violent things are given age ratings. When one gets older, one learns to differentiate reality from fantasy. One learns that one can enjoy violence in media, but that real life violence is nothing to be happy about.
@Hiraghm10 жыл бұрын
Valosken Let's be accurate here... things are given age ratings because people with influence *think* they affect the behavior of children.
@TheAlfredo0949 жыл бұрын
Valosken There IS actually a correlation between violent games and violent thoughts/behaviour, but it isn't nearly as extreme as many people think. Ss with everything, it's caused by a myriad of factors, and games alone won't make you violent, especially if you are over 9 years old.

Hodoss ***** Who wants to scare women away from video games? Here is what I get from the suggested course: 1 - Online harassment is a major issue in the online community 2 - There are a lot of women who play video games. This demographic shift has been happening for years. 3 - The role of women in video games is often that of a trope A - They're in danger or killed B - They're the motivation for the male C - They're eye candy D - They're a Mrs. male character As it has been pointed out, you can still enjoy something while being critical of it. Will I stop playing Mario because he is always saving Peach? Heck no! I'll get the next Mario game on launch day (A rarity for me these days). Will I stop playing Tomb Raider because there are nude mods for the game? Nope. This new Tomb Raider game is awesome! I can be very critical of something I love and still love it. I'm glad when shows like The Flash have an LGBT character in a stable healthy relationship. They have interracial dating. They have substantive conversations between two female leads. Ask yourself, what percentage of the world do straight white males make up? Ask yourself, what percentage of media do straight white males make up? I bring up The Flash (Even though it isn't a video game) because they're doing it right. In last weeks episode it actually wasn't a girl in danger, it was Joe. This week it looks like Cisco will be the one in danger. Heck... The first time Iris was in danger, she ended up punching out the guy. The show does a great job of not OVERUSING tropes. And that is my point... I do believe tropes exist for a reason. Guys are generally physically stronger than girls. For this reason we might think of a buff action hero type as a male. I'm not like "OH NO! Another male superhero!!!" But when EVERY single strong character is a male you start to say.... isn't there a strong female out there somewhere? The answer is a resounding YES! Have I said anything too controversial here? I'd love a full breakdown of where you think I have from either you or ***** .

Thing that get's me is that gamers have always been ostracized (and I say this as a non-gamer), typically pejoratives such as 'nerd', 'no-life', 'virgin', 'otaku', 'geek', ect were used. In the high school food chain these are people that are at the bottom (as opposed to for example the sporting types). Now it gets me that as a group of people that are vulnerable to being bullied, now *they* are apparently the bullies, and are being bullied by people that would have used those pejoratives, just 5 years ago. But now, *they* are the bad guys. And to those SJs that are crying crocodile tears about fake harassment I have this to say to you: "Get lost you Otaku nerdy geekish no-life virgin!"

As a female gamer who is in the somewhat smaller demographic that enjoys "violent" video games, seeing stuff like this is a dream. I agree wholeheartedly that these people are making mountains out of mole hills. Yes, there are some minor issues that may need to be addressed, like it wouldn't hurt to have more games with female protagonists, but overall it doesn't bug me and I'd rather not have developers feel obligated to make such games just because people demand it from them. That's the equivalent of threatening a writer if they kill off a certain character, it's not right. In the end if it has great gameplay and a great story then it shouldn't matter. Although yeah, people receiving threats over stuff like this is complete and total bogus no matter what side of the argument they're on. Sending threats is a very moronic thing to do.

When these critics talk about sexism in video games, they fail to take into account that gamer's are not all bad people. Gamer's are simply enjoying someone else's work and/or product that the gamer bought through a retail store. Critics and politicians have already gone after video game companies about violence, sexual content, vulgar language, etc. in video games, and the result was a classification system that is now being used today. I am willing to bet that these critics do not appreciate the amount of work that goes into creating an individual video game. Video games are much like art in a museum, but a computer is needed to create and use the video games whereas museum are was created with paint and canvas; stone; clay; etc.. Another difference is that museum art doesn't need a computer to bring it life whereas without a computer, video games are reduced to nothing more than a program locked on compact disks and such. One of my favorite quotes is,"A computer is only as smart as the idiot whom programs it." If you are reading this, have some respect for the idiot whom programmed your computer so that you can read this message. If not, then get off of this computer, and go do something else.

In fact, she said, all such decisions came from New York. The call went swimmingly, there was no tension, we were both warm and gracious to each other in passing info back and forth, and she told me that the ADL would get back to me sometime the following week. As should be evident, I haven't heard from them again and it's clear notifying them of the situation has done nothing to change their trajectory.

Anita Sarkesian said in her Feminist Frequency Video back in 2012 that Shigeru Miyamoto was sexist and misogynist, all because he made Princess Peach and Princess Zelda as damsel in distress tropes. And she added in that Miyamoto has a sexist agenda against women. When in reality Shigeru Miyamoto also has made games like Nintendogs, Wii Sports and other games on the Nintendo DS and Wii back in 2004 and 2006 because he loved his wife so much he wanted to help build a connection between them by trying to make games that could appeal to her. So in reality, Shigeru Miyamoto is not sexist or a misogynist. Anita Sarkesian has lied in most of her videos not only just about gaming, but also about movies, tv shows and also about music. Her christmas video about sexism in christmas songs is a prime example of her hatred and madness against things she does not like.

I feel it needs to be mentioned that the study which argues that females nowadays provide a good 48% of the total playerbase (if I recall correctly) had a very broad definition of the term "gamer", that is, it more or less counts every person playing Tetris on the phone while waiting for the bus or one of those stupid cowclicker games on Facebook while chatting with friends as a "gamer". To me, this definition seems rather absurd. Transferred to other fields, this effectively would mean I would be a media critic because I occasionally comment on KZbin Videos, a movie aficionado because I (rarely) watch movies, or (and this is hyperbole, I know) a raging alcoholic because I sometimes enjoy a good scotch. It is one thing to be in occasional contact with a certain subject. It is another thing entirely to be a hobbyist. How the aforementioned study would look like with a tighter definition of the "gamer" term is debatable, to put it mildly.

I really hate how they are trying to say that women have been kept out of the community and industry. That is so untrue it makes me sick. It's like being surrounded by people who claim the south won the Civil War. I've known so many girls and women back from the SNES/Genesis days of the 90s who loved gaming, the developers, community, and series' just as much as any other male would. This wasn't even an issue until hacks like Feminist Frequency saw they can make a lot of money off of these falsehoods and make names for themselves. All the women who speak up against their nonsense, one-sided narrative are labeled all sorts of insulting things for trying to defend their hobby. Again, I'd love to see Sommers debate Sarkeesian, as she has offered to do. But we all know the latter won't ever agree to it, as she knows that the facts are NOT on her side.

I'm a female software developer in the gaming industry. Some female workers in the industry (not tech workers though, mostly communication professionals or a few artists) keep telling us we are victims, and describe the industry as the most misogynist industry ever. They've been in a war against it for years. I only had fun in that industry, and I'm definitely not a gaming dude stereotype. I don't get it...there's no logic in their protests, only hate and utter bad faith. I will definitely leave the industry in a few years to work somewhere that has not been polluted yet by those annoying modern so-called feminists (some of those industries still exist in tech, but forget about most top US tech companies). Those girls are destroying my current workplace environment and I'm super pissed.

The only way you get 48% of gamers being female is if you classify anyone who's ever played Angry Birds for 10 minutes on the bus a "gamer." This is akin to me calling myself a Baseball player because once a year I might be involve din a pick-up game. "Gamers" are people for whom video games are a primary *passion.* Not something they pick up every once in a while for a few minutes at a time, not something they'll do if a friend asks them to try it, and certainly not something you never actually *do,* but spend an inordinate amount of time reading about it and claiming you do in order to make your complaints about it sound more valid. It's a *passion.* Now, there's no question; the amount of females who are legitimately gamers has risen quite dramatically in the past several years. But 48%? No. Not be a long shot. Not even remotely close.

Hi Ms. Sommers, You don't know me but I have become increasingly familiar with both your philosophy and your body of work. I am halfway through Who Stole Feminism? and much of what you describe within that book is alive and well at my college. I, too, consider myself to be a feminist, though I am committed to changing that label to 'equalist'. I have taken you very seriously when you have urged students to take back their college campuses, and to that end, I have been vocal about criticizing much of what is taught to us from a young age about the disadvantaged status of women. I have criticized the Obama administration for spreading false statistics, I have questioned the methods by which colleges are being urged to judge alleged rapists, and I have questioned the truth behind the matter of biological differences in gender. I fear I have been too vocal. I understand that you are familiar with philosophy, so I will give you an example of what I mean by "too vocal". I studied Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics and his virtues of Thought and Character. Analyzing racism through the lens of Aristotle's virtues was a fascinating exercise. I explored the possibility in class that due to incorrect application of Aristotle's virtues, racism was allowed to persist in the South because racists would be incapable of questioning their own belief systems due to a lack of education in Aristotle's virtues. My professor then asked me about Hitler and the Holocaust, and if Aristotle's virtues had been improperly applied within the system of the Third Reich. I argued that they had. I am now being accused of justifying the Holocaust and racism, despite being a Black man. I spoke to my professor about this, and he said that I gave an excellent example and that the students were mistaken in labeling my argument in that manner. I have been accused of being sexist because I made what I felt to be a harmless joke in class that was then cited as evidence of sexism. I was told this by my professor who was told by my classmates that they perceived me to be sexist. I said that a girl in the class "made me giggle" because her argument was shoddy and lacked textual evidence when we were discussing the text of the time. For this and criticism of the actions of another female member in class, many of the class has accused me of being sexist. I do not pretend to be blameless. There have been several instances where I have failed to communicate my argument effectively. I have sometimes spoken too quickly and not paused to consider what I am saying. I did not take into account the atmosphere of my school and assumed that we were all acting from a position of "good faith" in our arguments. I do not believe these are grounds for accusing me of being sexist. I have earned a reputation of being sexist on a campus where the warped feminism that many of us seem to only experience online has taken physical form. There is currently a debate on the use of trigger warnings occurring on campus. I have been criticized by fellow African-Americans for being inclusive of White people in the discussion about race, rather than cruel and exclusionary. One of our class's lectures was taken over by feminists who felt that the syllabus of the class was far too 'Eurocentric' (perhaps Phallocentric could be inserted here) and that the class needed to stop focusing on old White dudes. they fail to acknowledge that there are many pieces of old "White" culture that are invaluable foundations to our nation as it exists today. They (the students) are pre-programmed to analyze all of these classical texts through the lens of patriarchy,oppression, and gender; and so Plato's Republic becomes a sexist Fascist regime. Reason becomes equal to emotion, for reason is too closely related to Plato. Cicero is considered to be repetitive and unoriginal. Gilgamesh is seen as a prototypical male archetype, rather than a symbol for the importance of self-improvement and acknowledgement of mortality. Morality is seen as being relative. This is a campus that prides itself on being somewhat anti-establishment. One could substitute the word establishment for patriarchy. I have kicked the hornet's nest. I have learned so much from you. I have learned how to fact-check and how to deconstruct studies based on their methodology alone. You have completely revolutionized my world-view. You lifted the veil of patriarchy and oppression from my eyes and allowed me to become a more 'vertical' learner. You have shown me how to be objective in my education and in my analysis of my beliefs and those of others. Thank you for existing. As a gamer, as a male, and as a student on a liberal campus, thank you so much for doing what you're doing. I was told by my roommate tonight that word is getting around that I am questioning dearly held beliefs. A member of my class told a group of people that I justified the Holocaust and another member of my community stated that I stopped talking to xir after xe told me that xe had a boyfriend. These statements are simply not true. I believe that I have engineered my own social death on this campus. I have likely poisoned many people's view of me unintentionally. I believe that I will now start to experience increasingly strict ostracization and other forms of blowback for choosing to do what I feel is morally right. I have difficulty keeping my mouth shut or refusing to take action when I perceive things that are morally wrong happening around me. I am nauseated and my heart is pounding simply thinking about the repercussions of being labeled as a sexist on this campus. I am writing this because I am alone, or I perceive that I am very alone on this campus. I am sure that other people share my concerns about feminism, but perhaps they have the wisdom and prudence of thought not to speak up about it. I do not feel I have anywhere else to go, and so I come to you, even in as removed a fashion as this. When I have had a particularly bad day, I watch your videos. They remind me that sanity exists and that relentless ideologues are not the only ones concerned with equality. Your videos make me much more hopeful for the future of equality. I am very scared about my future on this campus. I am somewhat shielded from some of it because I am Black, but there is no escaping the fact that I look very, very masculine. I feel I have no support to fall back on. My family is 1,000 miles away and some faculty on this campus are not willing to listen to me. I intend to reach out to more of them, but I feel very skeptical of my ability to win anyone over. I am very scared. I would appreciate if the community who supports you would take notice of my problem, even for just a little bit of moral support. I hope you are able to read and respond to this, J True

This issue hits home for me. As a child, I liked to play games a lot. I wanted to be able to have conversations about games with other girls. But I was ostracized because I did not like the same shows as them. I did not know the same actors as them. I wasn't anti social, I just lacked common ground. And being a "gamer" automatically has a negative connotation as someone who has poor social skills and poor self control. I felt like I was forced to pretend that I didn't play games. If I was asked, "what did you do over the weekend?" my go to answer was "study" because I couldn't admit I played MMORPGs or MOBAs or whatever I was into at the time. Because that was looked down upon. Because that wasn't acceptable for a female student to be doing. And then people keep saying gamers are anti-social and have no life. Imagine this. You enjoy something. You want to share it with other people and enjoy it together. Then basically the entire world tells you what you like to do is worthless and makes you less of a person. I'm glad I grew up before this. I wouldn't want something I enjoy brainwashed out of me. This lesson plan needs to stop. There aren't very many, but there are girls who love games. This lesson plan is telling them to not do what they enjoy because someone who has no idea how they feel for some reason has the power to force this into them.

There are times when I am afraid to make criticisms of both sides due to the hostility I expect from the backlash. My main issue is I am a moderate, a neutral! I see some value in the criticism lobbied to gaming by feminists, but I also understand that they go too far. Scaring women away from speaking their mind by playing the 'professional victim' and exaggerating their harrassment will only stifle voices that agree with them.

I consider myself as leaning heavily on the pro-GG side, but I do notice that some things could be improved. Having said that, there are ways to approach a minor social issue in a very privileged society, and the approach that modern feminism consistently chooses to address minor issues just doesn't sit well with me. At all. I don't want to "listen and believe". I want to sit, have a cuppa, and discuss why our opinions differ. I'm a woman too, dammit, and I won't silently let somebody else speak for me. I think the reason why gamers were targeted is because while plenty of people play computer games and apps, gaming culture is a sub-culture. Basically, it easier to target a small fragment of the population if your subculture is very small. Also, lets face it to most people gamer = nerd, but who the heck knows what "regressive left 3rd wave feminist is"? I think what the extreme left subculture misjudged is that a lot of gamers are adults with wives, kids, and careers even after being nurtured within an unpopular subculture as a child. So ya, nerds are very familiar with adversity, we know how to deal with it, we're rise or go into the internet trenches and get dirty with you. What can I saw we're a diverse group.
@GreyException8 жыл бұрын
This is true. They made a mistake. I don't even think I can qualify to be a nerd if we took my computer knowledge into account, but yeah, gamers are just people. Ironically, they're showcasing another area of which they are discriminating while doing the accusing of being discriminated.

Am I the only one who is slowly reaching the point where I don't care anymore about sexism? It's always blown up with hyperbole and I'm frankly tired of listening to some worthless idiot in nearly every corner of every field telling me how everything I do is sexist in some way even though I treat men and women the same. I'm starting to realize that sexism doesn't really mean what it used to, once a sexist where someone who treated people differently based on their gender, today it's merely by affiliation in one shape or another using a black and white logic of "you are with us or against us". I'm gonna throw away my idea of sexism and just stick to the golden rule from now and if I am accused of sexism by way of affiliation again then "fuck you", not my problem anymore.

I have a bit of a jaundiced view on Sarkeesian since I saw a video about her opinions on how sexy female characetrs are in games. She nitpicked how the characters walk, and while some female characters - ones known to be "sexy" - have a distinct hip sway, she also accused characters whose hip sway was not as strong as being "oversexualised" for having any hip sway at all. Women have hip sway because of the way their hips are constructed, it is not "oversexualising" to show a modest hip sway. Plus apparently her favourite female character is an 8-Bit thing that does not even look human and has barely any story or characterisation at all. I like my game characters walking realistically, looking realistic, and I don't mind if they are shapely, thin, and have a great rack (some time look up Dragon Age: Origins female character models, especially in the mage robe with a boob window). I'm fat and frumpy, so I take it as a nice escape to be able to play a woman who is not fat and frumpy.

Thanks for this well investigated report! I (male) have been playing for almost 2 decades and my girlfriend is also a gamer. I've never encountered people harassing on her for her gender, ever, not even people trolling her (like "alright alright" described) and she and I have been together for five years now. Even before that my experience was that female gamers were considered to be super cool by men. I remember hiding my gaming hobbies from women during my puberty because I was afraid to be rejected. My personal estimation of the ratio of female to male main characters in games was that it was much higher compared to other media to its time and probably high when considering how few women were playing video games at that time. It's also very hard to just pin a number at it since it depends on the success of the title and just breaking gender. I'm also tired of just breaking every gender difference down to some men/women(/diverse) ratio which is closely related to an equality of outcome premise. But with characters like Lara Croft or Samus Aran there were for sure a couple badass heroes one could identify with.

Not to say they didn't exist, but I would of had a better chance finding a unicorn back then. Now its cool for both genders to play games, and its a maturing media. Great stuff! who doesn't want that? Unfortunately some (please read as some and not all) self-entitled women who are VERY late to the party, want to say its sexist. Well, perhaps instead of shunning nerds in the 90's, and continuing to call them names in the present, you should have been gaming with them way back when. Just saying!

+Insert weird username here I doubt you are. Just most people don't tend to come out and say what something is not unless there is claims that it is. You don't hear people calling a bike not a truck for this reason.

+iamsobanned You don't know there are many ignorantly claiming video games to be sexist? That is what the video was about.
@iamsobanned8 жыл бұрын
MrNateSPF you obviously didn't understand my comment. also not many just a few really loud voices in the crowd, most who probably didn't even play games in the first place. most people who play video games don't find them sexist so they don't need to go out of their way to say games aren't sexist unless someone else claims they are. it's like having to say the sky is not on fire. nobody needs to say that unless there is s reason to do so.

Chistina Hoff, you are amazing. Earlier this week there was an article in the one of the major papers of my city that further misconstrued GamerGate as a bunch of entitled white men, angry at women. Honestly the narrative on this topic is so skewed in the media I get very frustrated over it. It really makes my day easier when you add a bit of sanity back into it.

Thank you so much for speaking out on behalf of a hobby that I truly love and an art form that does accept everyone regardless of the blind sided opinions of faulty sources. We need as many people as possible to stand up for this culture and your clear and well supported videos about this issue are amazing. I am a 17 year old male gamer and in no way shape or form would I ever discourage someone from sharing my passion no matter their gender, age, skin color, or sexual orientation, I would only ever be inclined to welcome them as I always have before.

Who exactly is this Anita Sarkeesian? Why does she seem to have such undue influence when she's been so widely discredited?

I Just wanted to let you know that you are awesome and thank you for being a voice a reason in this matter. Several attention seeking individuals are demonizing the whole gaming community and its a shame that they get more publicity then someone as fare as you. In me and many other gamers you have loyal supporters who will always remember your honesty and kindness in this matter. Thank you.

I am a man and I am a gamer. This is the first time I have seen the factual feminist. I almost cried XD You are my hero!!! God bless you woman! I have been fighting on the side of equality and trying to defend feminism, but people like Anita have completely destroyed the feminist image! I am just so glad to have found a feminist who actually seems to advocate equality! I was starting to doubt myself! Thank you so much! Thankyou! I am going to share this video to anyone that will listen to show people that feminism isn't about guy bashing!

Lots of feminists are also against pornography. . . us gamers follow a stone cold rule, the only rule of the internet that can never be debunked. . . RULE 34! THERE IS A PORN FOR EVERYTHING! NO EXCEPTIONS! You can not stop the porn, Rule 34 is the greatest argument against pornography protesters, it shows them there is no hope for their pitiful argument! Mwahahahaha! Feminism, Rule 34 is a Gamer's true god.

Those videos are incredible! I've been watching a few of them, and you can be sure that I will talk about them around me and point to them whenever people are spewing arguments that come from biased or with citation and fact-checking needed ideologies. Whatever the opinion is, I'm always one for using facts, not feeling.

Getting in on this sort of thing a bit late, and I would like to thank you Christina, for giving gamers the time of day, while it's a pass-time that has been, and still is, to some extent, made fun of since I can remember. I was appauled by the idea of what begun as a discussion around video game journalism ethics got de-railed to such an extent by these troglodytes.

Sommers never fails to replenish my faith in humanity. Many of us feel disenfranchised in a debate we aren't allowed to meaningfully contribute to. Meanwhile the other side drifts of into extremity. Mrs. Sommers gives us a reasonable voice, and she gives them a lifeline back to reality.
