I am glad you got involved with millets 👏👏I was very surprised Dr.Rao didn’t even mention ‘positive millets’ that are super nutritious. Dr.Rao said the millets are hulled and then the rice is made. In fact one needs to eat unpolished positive millets after soaking them for 6-8 hours and then cooking like rice. I was surprised Dr. Rao did not mention the ‘Millet man of India’ Dr. Khadar Vali who was awarded the Padmashree award for the amount of work he has done on millets. Dr.Pal, I have learnt a lot about millets. I eat millets instead of rice or wheat 80% of the time. I will personal message you and provide you info I know on millets.

Dr.Pal I really like the way you are having your podcast and offcourse I must really appreciate the initiative of your today's podcast with Dr.Rao on millets it is very very imp for coming generation to know each and every details of millets and this video was really really useful though some imp facts was missing like unpolished millets should be used instead of polished one and secondly it shud be soaked nearly about 6-8 hours before using it as Rice and for Foxtail us can soak it for 4-5 hours. After soaking just dry it completely indoors and then u can store it and just soak for 10 mins before preparing ur recipes that wud be completely perfect.

Yeah but he called pseudoscience peddalists like satvik movement on this podcast. He also misinformed people that fermented foods have gut bacteria even after cooking. So yeah, sometimes research is lacking on his channel. I'm not hating on him, I like Dr. Pal, just that you gave some positives and I'm pointing out small negatives. And yes I think he is improving and trying to better inform people now.

Doctor Pal, Great to hear this discussion. Our gut and system has become so weak after eating rice and wheat for almost 50 years it now isn't able to digest millets even if I eat millet dosa or millet products. In those days people worked in agricultural fields and they had a strong digestive system that was tuned to digesting millets. But current sedentary lifestyle generation is finding it difficult to digest millets especially if you are over 50 years of age.

Because some ppl might get digestion problems once they start with millets due to its high fiber content.. so please soak ur millets and cook them☺️ Hope this helps ✌🏻

While this is a great initiative by Dr. Pal and surely millets need a comeback in our daily diet, I would like to also put the history into context. Just a tad bit amendment. It's clear Green Revolution made us self sufficient and production of rice and wheat went up at tremendous rate. However, it was the introduction of rice in Eastern India and rava in South India by the British which also contributed largely in the consumption of rice and wheat. Specially if I talk about Bengal, traditionally Bengal grew large quantities of foxtail millets and was a staple in our diets. There was a time when Bengal was forced to grow indigo and poppy for trade purposes instead of traditional varieties of rice and millets. However, this is a great content @DrPal and definitely a learning session.

Wonderful discussion & really fantastic information on millets ! Thank you Dr Rao & Dr Pal. I have included all other millets in our house [original form] for the past 5yrs [Ragi was always there before for ages] & its improved our health. I also agree that we should not over eat millets as they cause digestion issues & bloating in some cases due to very high fibre. But a perfect 30% replacement for rice & Wheat. The ready to eat or cook, organic, no added sugar, mix of millet with wheat are great options to introduce millets. Amazon is filled with such products. try it !

I eat Ragi dough (mudde) almost every day with the sambar and I don’t feel hungry for hours. I don’t get cravings for any evening snacks on 90% of the days. Thankfully southern Karnataka hasn’t given up on Ragi completely and northern KA and MH haven’t given up on Jowar, in fact in Bengaluru people go to restos that serve Jowar roti and moth bean dish and they enjoy it. KA held millet melas like a few years ago and popularised the “ minor millets”. The central govt also did its part to popularise minor millets last year. As per my own exp they are best used to prepare curd rice, dosa, khichdi, pongal (sweet and spicy one) , bisibelebath - such dishes. You can’t prepare pulao, puliogare with them.

Couple of random points from Dr.Roa's informative interview. In Costco US you can find plain Ramen noodles (not the 2 minutes thingy) made out millets and rice. The high thermal process should have been applied to this product to get the elasticity/gluten consistency that you see in normal noodles. My daughter loves it. The millet processed and shaped as rice is not a new concept. If you look at the pasta they applied the same concept by creating Orzo pasta that's in the shape of rice to satisfy the rice eaters. Millet idly, dosai, pongal are very common in many homes there days. Just replace rice with millet 1:1 to get the same result.

1) Millets are now grown with pesticides. 2) Millets are brought for cheap by stores and sold at twice the rate. 3) Not all have the same effects with millets. 4) We were also a rice eating people. Eliminating it is unwise. 5) Demand has actually gone down over the years since people don't like the taste that much. 6) Rich farmers and celebs are holding monopolies over millet.

Very true, being a home maker i tried all possible recepies with millets. Millets will not properly match with rasam and sambar, it causes too much of gas for me

@@rohinisubbarao3664 It is twice the cost of a kilo of rice. Unsustainable for me. Try putting a few spoons of curd with the millet alongwith rasam or sambar. Pickle also helps. Trust me you will thank me. Fermented millets are better. But if you forget to soak or ferment it, then you are in for a loss only. Nowadays I also find worms in millet packets. In the name of international year, they ruined it. Used to be more than half the price of rice once. Now it is four times as much. Distributors are looting. Especially the millet man and alternative eating type of KZbin people. If you see them, be sure that they have tripled the prices. Farmers who grow millets are at a loss in actuality

@@ushamurali9198 The KZbin doctors and the people around the millet man and alternative eating groups are responsible for this. If you see them, be sure that they have tripled the prices. They have turned distributors now. Buy from farmers at half rate, package and sell it for 3 times the rate. The farmers growing millets are actually at a loss. This is the vande Bharat-general coach reality of millet farming in India. Now they are using pesticides also. I have also Started to notice worms like you find in dal in millet packets. The fertilizer millet or expired millet is used in those millet restaurants. Never eat there. The celebrities have started growing millets and selling at high prices. They destroy small farmers in the process and they don't pay a single rupee in taxes as a result. A huge scam is happening. People who don't know pay 300-350 rupees a kilo for browntop or 150 for little millet. It's a joke. Actual rates are not more than 50. But they have bent the demand for the rich "farmers". I actually see a reduce in demand these days. People don't find it tasty and are abandoning it.

@@rohinisubbarao3664 also, try soaking it. I soak overnight, but my dad gets gas, my mother responds well and I don't see much change after turning to millets. Tried with others too. In my experience millets react differently for different people. If you don't stop sugar or eating out, packet snacks or Zomato, consuming millets is like setting fire to your own wallet My comments are being deleted : Here's what I'd written.. 1) Millet farmers are poor. It is being taken over by celebs, the rich and these influencers. 2) The influencers are distributors who buy at 50 Rs. a kilo and sell for 300. 3) The celebs and rich cultivate and sell at 300 under premium/organic branding and agri income makes it all tax free. 4) Pesticides are being used. Ive started to find worms like you find in masoor dal. 5) Expired millets and low grade fertilizer laden mass produced millets are used in the millet restaurants.
