That was a great scene. I always liked the parts of this show with Mike and Archie discussing, or arguing, about something. They almost always had very different points of view, but they always made it funny. Great writing AND great acting on this show, and that's a great combination to have! AITF was a terrific show!

My dad resembled Archie during the 1970s, but wore jeans and plaid shirts when not at work. And we lived in a rural kansas town of 200 people. I grew up watching this show when new. I was age 9 or 10 when it premiered. My family never missed an ep, it was hilarious. I loved O'Connor's show In the Heat of the Night, too. He was such a great actor he could play comedy or dramas, and different roles.

I was 11 years old when "All in the Family" debuted. I remember everyone being shocked, asking why this was ever allowed on the air... but they were also laughing hysterically. It soon became the most popular thing on television. The very first episode opened with a disclaimer: “The program you are about to see is All In The Family. It seeks to throw a humorous spotlight on our frailties, prejudices, and concerns. By making them a source of laughter, we hope to show - in a mature fashion - just how absurd they are.”

@@Peppi94 While I agree with that, that would still mean you can't tell Japanese and Chinese people apart by sight. The problem is that the Meatheads of the world always take it too far. If you tell someone like the Meathead that Japanese and Chinese people "all look alike," you will be called a "racist" even though through their "find out about them to tell them apart" reply, they're actually agreeing with you. As usual, they want it both ways.

@@WinslowLeach1974 I agree -- but the show wouldn't have been half as great, nor half as hysterical, nor half as controversial (yes, that's three halves!) if Meathead and Archie could always argue logically and coherently. @@fredwright5954 McGovern's democrat party was anti-war and one major flaw was him promising amnesty to draft dodgers , also McGovern ran pre Roe vs Wade , O'Connor was a staunch Catholic and pro-lifer , I wonder what he would think of today's Socialist Democrats.

@@NATIVESUNSETS65 I remember 1972 and 1974. Nixon won by a landslide, then resigned in disgrace. Capitalist Republicans have less integrity than Socialist Democrats, apparently. McNamara eventually conceded the Vietnam War was a huge mistake, as did anyone else with a shred of intelligence.

@ejdf870 As much as they are both characters that the audiance loves to hate, I think that it is important that we acknowledge the redeeming qualities on both sides. You can tell that they both had their share of decency. You could even tell that, deep down, they both respected each other!

Didn't take much to trigger the meathead, much like reiner himself.

Compare Mike to the way Lionel Jefferson and Irene Lorenzo handled Archie. They always got the better of him. Lionel would toy with him without Archie realizing it, while Irene would put up with Archie and then zing him with mic-dropping comment.

I think it would be hilarious if Bunker launched into a very detailed explanation of Buddhist theology and religious philosophy, and then never acknowledged the incident ever again.

The origin of bless you. When you open your mouth to sneeze, evil spirits can get in and make you sick. So you bless them, so they won't get sick. I don't bless people because I'm not a priest.

No one ever says "Satan Bless You." Apparently Satan never blesses.

Growing up in England...they gave a different reason for saying 'Bless you' when you sneeze. According to folk lore...people believed that when you sneezed ..your heart skipped a beat...so they quickly blessed you in hopes that your heart would keep beating after the skip.

I would have loved to see Edith Bunker and Rose Nylund have a full-blown conversation with Archie in the room, sitting between the two.
