This show and The Jeffersons were my favorites growing up. They talked about issues that even today most wont bring up and they did it honestly and not sugar coating it.

That was a great scene. I always liked the parts of this show with Mike and Archie discussing, or arguing, about something. They almost always had very different points of view, but they always made it funny. Great writing AND great acting on this show, and that's a great combination to have! AITF was a terrific show!

My dad resembled Archie during the 1970s, but wore jeans and plaid shirts when not at work. And we lived in a rural kansas town of 200 people. I grew up watching this show when new. I was age 9 or 10 when it premiered. My family never missed an ep, it was hilarious. I loved O'Connor's show In the Heat of the Night, too. He was such a great actor he could play comedy or dramas, and different roles.

Archie had a sense of humor , even if it was prejudiced at times, his humor made him likeable. If the character did not have that quality , his character would of came off as mean spirited or miserable.

Can you distinguish between an American and a Canadian just by looking at them? No. You have to listen to them speak. And that's how you'd tell the difference between a Japanese person and a Chinese person - their languages are quite different.

These clips are just as funny as when I watched them 50 years ago. I'm a liberal, and agree with almost everything Mike says, but my sympathy is almost always with Archie because he isn't a self-righteous prig, and at the end of the day--he's the one putting the house over their head and food on the table.

So, I started saying "Bless me" to myself when I sneeze, so there isn't that rude silence hanging in the air. Plus, I am blessed!

Compare Mike to the way Lionel Jefferson and Irene Lorenzo handled Archie. They always got the better of him. Lionel would toy with him without Archie realizing it, while Irene would put up with Archie and then zing him with mic-dropping comment.

Growing up in England...they gave a different reason for saying 'Bless you' when you sneeze. According to folk lore...people believed that when you sneezed ..your heart skipped a beat...so they quickly blessed you in hopes that your heart would keep beating after the skip.
