I owned a 2009 RR tai 3.5 she was by far and away my favourite car I was unfortunate to have bought it when certain things needed replaced it had 65000 miles on the clock but once these were done and I put new bigger alloys and tyres upgraded grill an side vent and steps on it it looked and drove like new and you really did feel good owning it she was fun and very powerful and imposing in black the only reason I sold it I qualified for mobility . Unfortunately they would not let me have one one the so I got the Volvo xc40 also nice but no Range Rover

Hey Sam, did you have any issues at all with the 275/55R20? Any rubbing /catching? Time for new tyres on my L322 S/C and I like the AT look and practicality but worried they will catch (mine rubs on something already on full right lock - not looked yet, but I'm assuming it's a loose inner arch liner) I know the L405s have more of a positive offset moving the tyre outboard a little.
@SamsMotors7 ай бұрын
@@petrolthreads_ Hi, The rear right arch liner has a bulge in it to clear the fuel filler neck - this will need to be trimmed, or allowed to "self clearance" over time (this is what I did). The only other rub I get is a very slight one when going full lock in reverse, but again it's very minor. The L405 wheels on mine have more offset which helps a little.

Back in the 90s I owned a back street Land Rover garage, repairing mainly 4x4s. Anyway I also did green laneing I had a 110 with off road biased tyres and another guy came along in his 90 with brand new Pirelli scorpions for a laugh before changing the tyres. We including him believed that he would be stuck every 2 minutes and struggle throughout the day. Oh was we in for a shock he never got stuck or have serious traction problems we couldn’t believe it and he wasn’t the greatest driver also.

Disco3 owner here, & they're a lovely place to be when they're working but you have to be ready to spend a bit to keep them that way. Nothing on them is simple, or cheap. I keep hearing about if you keep up to the service schedule they'll not give you any trouble, but we do that & they still manage to surprise us at least once a year. That said I guess you can't expect much better from a 200k mile vehicle (didn't have that much when we got it, but they're meant to be used aren't they.....?). 😁

Those tyres seem pretty impressive, are they All Season (with snowflake symbol?) Apart from my L322 I also have a Suzuki Vitara (don't laugh, it's not in the RR league but actually quite a capable little off roader!) and I fitted BFG All Terrain tyres which are also All Season; they are quite noisy (everything is noisy in a rag top Vitara) but they are also great in adverse conditions (wet as well as snow). Back to the L322... I started out with Pirelli Scorpion All Season tyres which were fine 90% of the time but a couple of years ago their limitations in extreme snow were revealed as I had to make a 5-point turn on a steel snow covered road at a busy Austrian ski resort. As I inched it around, the bloody thing started to slide downhill. Sideways. Towards parked cars and ascending traffic. Every time I tried to move an inch it slid down further,, threatening to break loose into freefall at any moment. I baled out, and when my heartrate stabilised I fitted chains, and was able to make it out of there. The fear was laced with shame that this could happen while driving the ultimate 4x4 so a few days later I fitted a set of Continental TS850 Winter Contact (proper winter) tyres and the transformation was staggering; I could probably throw away those chains now (I won't!) I can remember having to descend some slopes at 5mph to avoid losing traction; now I can drive them Iin the same conditions with impunity, and can take snow covered bends without a hint of drifting. In extreme situations I deploy HDC not because I definitely need it but because it's there so why not; it equires a leap of faith but is a remarkable feeling as the car feels its own way down an icy descent, with those busy alternating little noises as it controls each individual wheel with a coordinated blend of power control and ABS. What an awesome piece of kit!
@SamsMotors3 жыл бұрын
Hi Justin, they're '3PMSF' (3 Peak Mountain Snowflake) rated, which effectively means they meet the requirements for a winter tyre. Your example of sliding down an icy hill is a great example of why there's no real substitute for proper winter tyres. Thanks for the comment!

@SamsMotors4 ай бұрын
Hi George, I didn’t have to move the washer bottle, that’s not necessary for this size of tyres. If you go much bigger then it might be necessary though!

Those new tyres maybe quieter because they're new so have tread cushioning the trye carcus from the road whereas your worn Pirellis have less tread allowing the tyre to sit closer to the road. Could be miles off my thinking but I've noticed that worn tyres are noiser over new one from when I've road tested cars at work. Either way it's a noticeable improvement which counts. 😁😁😁

I actually agree with you. I'd have loved to have stuck with a 255 wide tyre and just gone up in profile to give a 32" tyre, but sadly the sizes just don't exist on a 20" rim! I think it's driven by American tastes for big fat wide tyres. Glad you enjoy it :D
@AnthonyIlstonJones3 жыл бұрын
@@SamsMotors You get more grip with a wider tyre, which is a consideration both on and off road imo. Downside is a wider tyre will increase drag, which in turn increases fuel consumption as it requires more power to move forward at the same speed. Major issue on a mountainbike, not so much of a worry when you have a 4.4 litre turbocharged V8 pushing your almost three tonnes down the lanes. You'll hardly notice a difference, except maybe in your stopping distances (especially in snow, did you SEE that TFL tyre test?!?).

Don’t forget the old Pirelli had flat spots which would increase there road noise so not surprised new AT are quieter they are round !

Yes this is true, I did point out that they're part worn so not a completely fair comparison. Still, I'm glad it hasn't made the ride any noisier!

Only just dropped on this channel, good to see a decent, raw video on the basics (if you could call it that) without being peppered with in video sponsors and begging for likes and subscribers every 5 farts... Like the Bald And Bankrupt of car vloggers... Job well done - just to be a Hippocrate I've liked and subscribed anyway 😂

Great comment, and thank-you for the feedback and sub! It's always difficult to see how one's own videos compare with others from the viewer's point of view, so it's nice to read stuff like this. As I said in a previous video, I do find 'begging' for subscribers and likes very cringeworthy, but - at the same time - that video has garnered the most likes of any of the Range Rover videos yet, so it does appear to work! 😂

Hi Sam, l have the same l322 as yours and thinking of the same upgrade with the 275/55’s. What have you done with recalibrating the Speedo. How do you do that ? Thanks
@dansutherland70 Жыл бұрын
I’m a bit late to this, but I think part of the treason the tyres read quieter was that you were going 6% out so slower. It might be worth checking again against a gps speedo.
@SamsMotors Жыл бұрын
The new tyres are bigger, so the same speed on the speedometer would actually be 6% faster in real terms.

@@dansutherland70 😅 you were on the right track though! As an aside, the tyres have definitely gotten noisier since they were new (as expected). Would be interesting to do the same measurement now and see by how much!

Great video again Sam!, keep em coming sir.. thanks for advice on l405 wheels by the way, I got a new set of swirl ones with brand new tyres and a absolutely love em! I have an autobiography interior to install now Sam so any advice on retrofitting would be good! Lol.
@SamsMotors3 жыл бұрын
I like those 'swirl' ones actually! They suit the L322 perfectly. Nice work finding an autobiography interior, that must be rare! I don't suppose you have a spare driver's seat now, in Ivory perhaps? Haha!
@jim8oy3 жыл бұрын
@@SamsMotors hi Sam, yes it’s hard to find the autobiography interior, I was very lucky but it did cost me £800.. actually Sam my interior is in fantastic condition and I will be selling it but the new seats have heating and cooling so I just want to make sure they fit and at least make the normal movements, I’m not sure what colour mine is but it looks like a cream of some sort, been snowing here in Kent but clearing up now and weekend looks like it could be dry and warm so I may be able to get it in then, if you send me your email Sam I’ll send you pictures of my interior before I remove it, jim8oy@live.com

Sam, I hope it’s okay to post a comment to an older post. I’m in the US and I have a ‘11 RR HSE Lux with the 5.0 V8. For tires, I struggle because I want All Terrains, but they don’t have a high enough speed rating. My truck calls for Speed Rating of V (149 mph). The Cooper AT3s that we have here have a Speed Rating of S (106 mph) or T (112 mph). I’m allowed to step down 1 rating to H (130 mph). I have no intention of ever approaching even 100 mph, but I’m thinking that someone is going to have an issue with my Speed Rating mismatch. We have annual state inspections here ( I think this is similar to your MOT), and I think they will fail me over speed ratings. Maybe the police might ticket me for the violation if they notice. For these reasons, I plan to stick with an All Season with the right Speed a rating. Any thoughts?
@SamsMotors2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, thanks for the comment. My instinct would be that the biggest problem with the incorrect tyre speed rating might be from the insurance company deciding not to pay out following a crash. Not sure what it's like in the States but over here they will use any excuse to refuse payment. My tyres are 'T' rated (118mph), and the 4.4 TDV8 has a maximum speed of 131mph. HOWEVER, under EU/UK law it is permitted to run winter tyres with a lower speed rating (minimum of Q). Whether or not my Coopers meet the definition of a winter tyre is up for discussion - but they have the 3PMSF rating, so that might be enough. I think in the US though with such an abundance of high-powered trucks and SUVs everywhere, there must be thousands or even millions of vehicles out there that have under speed rated tyres on them, without any apparent issues. So I'd say you'll probably be fine.

You're definitely not wrong there. Never really fair to compare part worns with new tyres either, but I thought I'd do a comparison out of interest anyway. I'm just glad they're not any noisier!

I went with the Cooper AT3's! I am having a hard time with the TPSM. Shop reset them with their device & I drove off happy. Next am, TPSM Warnings. The Shop reset twice and told me to contact the online seller if reset fails. Failed 3rd time. I do not have any reset options on my dash menu (2012 HSE LUX)- do you have any solutions? thanks again for your videos!

I’ve had mine for 10 years now & still love it. I’ve been looking at doing something similar with my tyres - is there much speed difference & how did you deal with it ??
@SamsMotors3 жыл бұрын
The speed difference is about 6%. So at 70 indicated you're doing about 74. I'm going to recalibrate the speedo using SDD hopefully to correct it!

Great channel love it ! I have a range sport 2010 and I’m in the Middle East originally Sheffield 😉 Thanks for the content is very helpful I’m currently trying a few mods the tire advice was helpful is I have road tires on 20’s but I want to increase the tire size - question what is the max tire size on 20’s I can fit ? Also I would like to buy some other upgrades (suspension mainly) what site would you recommend ( I have an international shipping address out of the uk ) Thanks for the content wish I had found this channel sooner ! Drew
@SamsMotors2 жыл бұрын
Hey Drew thanks for the comment! I'm not entirely sure regarding Sport tyre size, but I believe the max safe size without going too crazy with lifts and arch mods is the same as I have fitted here, 275/55 R20. And I'd recommend the Cooper Discoverer AT3s too, been really impressed with them. As for sites there are a few good ones in the UK, for general spares and service items Advanced Factors are really good. Not sure what you mean by suspension upgrades but PowerfulUK have a good selection of bolt on accessories for the L320... Most of which you can get from China cheaper but, ya know!

@SamsMotors9 ай бұрын
Hey, congrats on your new tyres The figure on the side of the tyre is a “maximum pressure” so should never be run at this. I run mine at around 34PSI all round, which has resulted in pretty even wear over the last 30k miles.
