I witnessed an attempt to scam an elderly man of £32,000 (around $40,000) by a scammer from Kolkata in India. They tried to convince him to go to his local Santander Bank and transfer money to another UK bank account. This video describes their techniques for persuading him to do this and the coaching the gave him to ensure that he complied with their demands.
I post videos to raise awareness of these sorts of scams. Please share to help stop them.

Spread the word. ‘Lose’ (to lose money) & ‘Loose’ (to loosen a knot I.e the opposite of tighten) So it should be .... losing £32k Not loosing (which would be to loosen) :) Merry Educatedmas

these scams are designed with the understanding that they'll only work on very gullible people, these call centers send out thousands of calls a day knowing they'll get money out of a few people who will fall for it

@fourd8438 3 жыл бұрын
When scams are viewed through the lens of a spectator, it always feels this way, keep in mind that these scammers target people who are not technologically fluent / gullible / too trusting. And on top of that there is a later of emotional manipulation, whether that is the fear of losing every cent you have ever worked for, or otherwise. (For example, a scammer telling an elderly woman (or scambaiter posing as one) that they remind them of their grandmother). AND they send out thousands of calls per day so even if only 5 people fall for the scam, the call centre will make 200-2000 each one.

@@updownbanana Unfortunately in many cases, even when a person suspects they might be being scammed, loss aversion is a powerful thing that the scammers will often employ when the victim starts to show skepticism. So a person doesn't have to be gullible to end up being scammed. Unfortunately I have a friend that learned that the hard way. But yeah, don't lie to your bank about what's going on. They can help you if you're honest about what's going on.

Hence he’s sending money not depositing it. Banks really only watch for money laundering as a legal requirement. Theoretically this is. It’s not beyond unusual for a bank to see transactions like this. 40k is a lot but not insane for the bank at all. I’ve had my grandparents wore me like 15-20k a couple of times for school. So by just giving them death sentences rather than helping them out to stop them from scamming is shortsighted and deluded

@@FLAMEalan They always have a choice. Most of the tech giants legitimately have tech support centres in India because the cost of labour is so inexpensive. Plus, it has been shown that when offered legal jobs, the scammers never reply or follow through with the offered help. Maybe the struggle to feed families is real, but stealing, extorting, and ruining lives is not the solution. I stand by my opinion. Scammers should be eradicated. Would I like to see them turned into good, honest, people? Sure, but they don't want that. Does providing all the data on their crimes to cybercrime police do anything? No. That only leaves one solution. You don't like it, fine, but it is the *only* option left.

So I've watched a lot of their stuff in the last 3 days and now I go and get a comment on a 4 month old Jim Browning video. It's almost like you knew what I was doing. You haven't hacked in to my computer have you? 😂 I agree, it is easy to fall for it. Especially with complicated issues like tech support. I had a situation about 12 years ago, where I typed my bank name in to Google and clicked on it, not realising that it had taken me to a scam copy of the bank page (now I know to check the URL). It asked for digits of my password to login as normal, which obviously failed. Then it said retry, but I didn't click on to the fact that they now asking for the alternative digits, which again failed, it then asked me to prove my identity by filling out my name and address. It all looked exactly the bank website at this point, so I didn't suspect anything. Fortunately the bank were already on to it and suspended my account in the back ground and explained what happened. If there had been public information adverts around that explained these things, I would have known what to check for. Either the government should do them or the banks/I.T. giants should do a collective advert.

Earlier this week, I saw this happening in my local supermarket. I was putting away my purchases at the kiosk when the woman behind me put ten Amazon cards on the counter. Fortunately, the sales-woman was on the ball and asked if they were Christmas presents or had someone rung her and asked her to buy them. It transpired that she had the scammer on her mobile phone at that moment, and was terrified that he could overhear what was being said. She said that she had been run by someone claiming to be from the Inland Revenue and wanted payment for outstanding taxes which could most easily done using Amazon gift cards. What amazes me is that she was in her 50s and seemingly quite intelligent. She had fallen for the scammer's patter completely. She was appalled at how easily she had fallen into this trap. It was time for a hot, sweet cup of tea in café when she realised how close she had come to losing £1000.

It's so scary isn't it? My parents are in their 80s, and don't do much on the computer, and don't touch the internet at all - but they get scam calls all the damn time. They hang up on most of them, but my dad almost fell for a different one recently. They'd come door to door, and were trying to sell him on 'rendering' the outside of their house, claiming they would make it stronger and 'fix' subsidence (which the house isn't having a problem with). My dad was going to go through with it, at a cost of $15,000. He also wouldn't listen to me that it was a scam, and that a plastic coating sprayed onto brickwork isn't going to do a damn thing to foundations, but he was being stubborn. In the end I had to find the paperwork and call them behind his back, then put the fear of fucking god into them. I let them know that I knew it was a scam, had checked their website and reported them to Watchdog, and the better business bureau, and that I'd contact the police if they tried to prey on my elderly parents again. House never got rendered, they never got a penny. But it was so close!

I don’t understand how people can have such a lack of guilt and shame to scam an elderly person. To me, it’s almost like scamming a child, and it’s especially evil when the person has dementia (my grandma has Alzheimer’s) The total lack of remorse in the scammers voice honestly makes me lose hope for humanity. Although I would still hate them, I would respect them a hell of a lot more if they had an unwritten rule to leave the elderly alone, but no, not only to they have no problem scamming the elderly, they actively target them. Legitimately makes me sick.

you dont understand how a lot of the rest of the world thinks. there are many different mindsets out there that we dont ever get to experience (often). many people in third world countries (most of india is poor) have some very shitty mindsets that justify their behaviour. they simply justify their actions even if they know its shitty by some nonsensical reasoning such as "who cares if you scam an old person, they are going to die soon anyways" or "they are a waste of space" etc. there are MANY of these mindsets like this out there that we dont often experience where we live. and dont misunderstand me here, im not saying that this is for ALL people in third world countries, most people in third world countries have some of the biggest hearts youll ever see. but we live in a world of polar opposites. we have the best of the best and the worst of the worst everywhere, developed countries too (obviously).

Henri Hanninen: It may have something to do with how UK bank fraud liabilities are structured; in the US, bank customers generally have zero liability for most forms of fraud, so the banks here have a powerful incentive to set up robust fraud prevention and response measures- hence most US banks would likely accept the information (albeit without releasing anything to the third party fraud informant). It's possible that the threshold of fraud liability for UK banks is way lower, so that they would feel more comfortable in responding exactly the way TSB was reported to have acted.

Don't know about the UK, but the US requires all bank workers to follow up on all reports no matter where they come from. Training emphasizes that any failure to do so will result in fines and/or jail time, no matter how ridiculous the report may sound. I've been through that *^&* training every six months since I started work 11 years ago, they definitely drill it into your head. And I don't even do accounts.

@@colin-campbell Brain chemistry degrades as you age. The cholinergic & glutaminergic systems in the brain start their recession around 70 years old, around a solid 80% of people at this age are on gabaergic medication alongside an opiate, most frequently gabapentin & pregabalin which slow down the glutamate system even more. A 91 year old man is in no way naive, being elderly is the opposite of naivety. Old people are just more gullible because of how alone they are and are so desperate for human interaction. Clearly the case here with norman as if he had a family support network he would most likely not have his pension stacking up while he rots away. Less acetylcholine with age = less critical thinking & problem solving, only a small amount of people in their 90s aren't amnesiacs, we all need to spend more time talking with old people, i have such respect for care takers who keep them company. This boom of indian evil that happened in the past 7 years really needs to be something all of the elderly know about, its shocking how little the authorities care. I would say people in their 40s or 50s who fall for these scams are indeed naive, not being familiar with computers is one thing but trusting some indian on the phone without being a little sceptical is mind boggling, as racist as it is. I do feel sorry for people who work at legitimate call centers who have a strong indian accent.
