So I have been here for almost a full year now. One crazy winter, one roof that almost collapsed, a crazy construction schedule, a Uhaul truck full of stuff and some final bathroom and kitchen remodeling while my son is here! I really do look forward to being trapped in by snow! LOL! I can spend the winter arranging my cabin just the way I like! And thank you for the kind words Diane! I am so happy you are enjoying my channel!

Ahhh well thank you kindly Fred! I had no illusions that this would be easy and I still am having a great time! I know eventually it will all be worth it! And I love bringing you along and sharing this journey! All the ups and downs! And still SO much more to get done! But I do stop and relax in the back yard with Kenai. Sip a beer and just stare at the mountains and trees! Unwinding at its best! Thank you so much Fred!

I think once you get all your stuff there, I'm sure you will be more motivated because you will finally have everything under one roof and you can incorporate all those things coming, and then you can get systems in place with all your things. As it is, you've had to get systems in place with what you currently have. Then you will need to revamp your systems and organizations of everything with all your incoming stuff. Sister, you got a lot on your plate! Once you get things situated and settled I know you will have more peace in your heart. The beautiful scenery never gets old. You're gonna be ok!

Yeah the previous system was just find a pile or box. Also the cabin has no closets either so it just gets to a point where you move one pile to another pile then back again! But with a couple dressers now, I can actually put stuff in a permanent place. Same with my kitchen though. I need to rip out this island and open it up a bit. Luckily once my son helps me remodel the kitchen and bathroom and we place furniture where it needs to go, I literally have the entire winter to sort my cabin out. And once I have a place for everything, THEN I can clean on a regular basis. I love having everything cleaned up and put away. I know everyone does but I have not been able to do it for a year! It is nice to have my son here though! Thank you so much Lisa!

Slowly, or maybe not so slowly 😂, making my way through your videos. I’m amazed with how you’re living your dream in Alaska. Ever since I was 8 I’ve had a fascination and desire to live in Alaska. I agree with it being difficult to be motivated with a cluttered home. I’m 57 and am in the decluttering phase of my life. Last summer I helped empty my mother-in-law‘s house since she was moving into assisted living apartments. I told my husband that we can’t leave a giant job like this to our kids when we get older. I find the more I get rid of the better I feel, less stressed. I donate a lot on our local buy nothing group. Toasting definitely brings out the flavors in spices/nuts. I’m a retired chef/pastry chef and it makes a good recipe into a great recipe! Chai is one of my favorites. I use plant-based milk and it is so creamy and yummy. Thank you for the great video! I appreciate you and the enjoyment I get from watching it.

Anyone who binge watches my channel probably doesn't realize the enormous compliment that is to a KZbinr. and then adding comments on top of that! So incredible! I definitely have wanted to live this life for so long. Alaska was always on top of my list but I did look at Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Montana and Idaho. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't having tunnel vision. No state can compare to Alaska (in my opinion). Preparing to move to Alaska got me to live lean. I have never really been materialistic so in my house in Colorado, my living room had no furniture. It was just a big open room. But even with that, I STILL got rid of so much stuff. I didn't bother with a yard sale. I just gave stuff away to coworkers or set stuff on the curb and placed a Craigslist ad. There is definitely some freedom to not owning a lot of stuff! I agree with you on toasting. Especially for nuts and breads! The chai I taught myself how to make. I was spending so much at Starbucks getting Chai twice a day! I wasn't happy with store bought. So I just sat in front of my stove one day and tried stuff. I normally cook that way. Experiment! I am not chef, but I do know spices! 😉🧡

Had to add you are so lucky to have an amazing handyman and contractor when I got here I had all good people and everyone said I would have a hard time. After three years some people have gotten greedy and now people are not calling people back all summer and it’s been incredibly difficult to get any work done the handymen have gotten very arrogant and very expensive and have zero concern for the customers or people in the area I live in Central Oregon coast so if anyone is reading this they may know what I’m talking about. You are so blessed to have Aaron he is such a GIFT and not arrogant or stuck up or anything.

My contractor was a lucky find! He specializes in remote property work and I would have to say there are not many of them! But more lucky that he was a good craftsman too. I like that he treats the work like he is working on his own cabin. So I know I could probably find someone cheaper but why would I do that! He shows up and doesn't nickel and dime the work. The fact that he knew Aaron was awesome too. Aaron is just one of those guys that jumps right in and gets a project done! I think that is the main reason my contractor keeps him around! They work well together. And that is why I said they could use the bunkhouse if they wanted to hunt on/around my property. It was the least I could do since they literally saved my cabin! Thank you so much Violet!

That foggy opening of the video, is exactly what it looks like outside my window this morning, grey and gloomy. Inside, with a dog on my side in the sofa, candle burning on the table, quiet Sunday morning. 💕 If it was colder, the fire would be burning in my fireplace, instead I have placed a couple of tealights in there for decor. Thankful for the mild summer and fall, I havent had to put heating on, or light a fire since May. We have an energy crisis here in Europe, and prices are soaring, I will be ok, because of the wood, but my heart goes out to all those that have to choose between heating or eating.. About clutter and making a home. As you know, I built this home from scratch, (not literally, I had a builder), but the first year, I lived in clutter, and sorting out items, like clothes and other belongings. I detached myself from holding on to stuff for sentimental reasons. Lots of the things, I only have a picture of now. I had spent every dime to my name by the point I moved in here, me and my two sons did it ourselves, with a rented van, with horrible tires, in a winterstorm. Anyway, one needs to live in the new home a year at least to know what you need, and where to place things. And storage is the biggest issue. I have finally finished the pantry this last week, the last "Ivar" rack from Ikea! Slow and steady you will win the race, what you have accomplished so far is amazing - in just a year! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Enjoy the time with your son! I can tell your excited - they are the light of our lives! ❤ I am looking forward to footages of Bigfoot! 😉 Enjoy your spicy chai latte. 🌸

I have always loved fog! In Colorado, I would be lucky to see it 1-2 times a year! Here I get to see it almost every morning! So awesome! I have been watching some videos about the energy issues there! You are smart enough to have backups though! This stage in my move to Alaska was going to happen no matter what. I expected it. Living without furniture was fine but I am ready to get a dresser or two! And I could have easily made it for another year if needed. I have everything I need to survive. I will have a nice long winter to spend time sorting and arranging (and probably re arranging) until I get it just right. A process I am actually looking forward to. I had a great time going through all my stuff before moving it into storage. It amazes me what I had kept over the years I thought I had to keep but now I don't even remember what I threw/gave away Funny though because there are boxes of stuff I had no idea I had kept. I have a large cabin but plan to keep it sparse. No big walk in closets for this gal! My son and I have been having a great time catching up! I enjoy cooking for him again too. And he plans to cook for me! Kenai is just loving it! Footage of Bigfoot may be hard. I hear they just know how to avoid the cameras! Thank you so much

Let me see now.... When you showed the stuff in storage I saw a large drill press, a large black tool box.... Mmmmm tool's, more projects can be done this winter..... 😁 Clean and organized living area is good..... Make squirrel's pet's, then if it gets bad... Dinner! Don't over work yourself or your son... Enjoy family. Keep it up. You are doing great.

Drill press, TWO large Craftmans (3 layer) tool boxes all filled with tools! A compound sliding miter saw on a collapsible stand with rollers. And a 55” inch TV! No idea what I am going to do with that. But my furniture!!! OMG it is so nice to have dressers again!! I may still have to buy some furniture though. As for squirrels, if they stay off the cabin they can do what they want. My son made this trip to bring me my stuff and to help me on projects. I will still drive him around to see this great state especially now with all the colors changing. It really is so nice to see him again! Thank you so much Charles!

I am a 57 year old very successful individual in my field of work and have always been the tie that binds my family. I helped raise my brothers from the age of ten…cooking, cleaning, gardening (which is part of my vocation as a horticulturalist now). I have always been beyond independent (hog on ice has often been used when my name is uttered). It was not until this past year of my life that it was brought to my attention that extreme independence is a coping/survival skill learned in the midst of abuse. I also learned the I had ADHD…which made no sense at first because I could work well in extreme chaos and emergency situations and did not get distracted easily when focusing on my work or duties, what I did not know that the clutter in my home and my personal world showed the other coping skill I picked up….my coping skill when unsure or uncomfortable was to freeze…then as things built up it became even more difficult to cope with the situations. Understanding this obviously is not a “silver bullet” fix but what it has done is give me the awareness to seek professional help and to notice when I go into this behavior and work my way through without the self flatulence I inflicted in the past. I am not saying this is the case with you…it certainly was just my truth and I empathize deeply with the frustration of getting “stuck” in a project you dearly wish to complete. I wish you all good things and deep blessings in the new year. Thank you so very much for sharing your adventure with such transparency. You give each individual the permission and strength to Persue their dream….in the most beautifully perfectly_imperfect fashion. Blessings to you.

I have moved my household multiple times in the past because of a career that required frequent relocations -- once I did this three times in 12 months. Setting up the new household can be exhausting if you do not pace yourself. I recommend you give yourself a vacation somewhere else to have a brief break from the chaos and disorder. Then come back refreshed and ready to sort through your things and decide what can stay and what must go. Set up the kitchen, one bathroom and one bedroom first so you can retreat from the disorder each evening. Empty one box at a time instead of having a lot of partially unpacked boxes everywhere. And have a plan to remove each emptied box and its packing paper from your home as soon as that box in unpacked. Flattened carboard boxes and packing paper, layered over a future vegetable plot, wet down and covered with fallen leaves will decompose into good garden soil and save you many trips to a landfill. Any items you unpack and decide you do not need, can be of value to others -- donate them to a local charity or gift them to neighbors or place them in a storage area for a future garage sale. And take your time once you have set up one bedroom, one bathroom and your kitchen. Work on unpacking and organizing your household a few hours per day and give yourself a break on the weekends. Pacing yourself can make the process less stressful.

OMG! 3 times in one year! OUCH! I only have so much time to get my cabin in order. Working full time and doing KZbin full time leave just a few hours a day to clean up. BUT I will have a nice long winter to get things just right. My son and I will be remodeling the kitchen and bathroom and then just like you said, one box at a time. So much cardboard that I can use in the garden too! I did manage to get rid of so much stuff before items went into storage. A roll off dumpster full of stuff I had been keeping around for years, some still in boxes! I gave away anything that could be of value to anyone. Amazing what some people will take if its free! My Uhaul was filled with tools, furniture and canning supplies. Oh and (4) 55 gallon open top barrels for water storage. Can you believe that nobody in Alaska sells plastic 55 gallon barrels?? Its steel or nothing here! Your advise is coming from experience and that is the best kind of advise! Thank you so much for the pro tips! And I do relax by just going to my backyard, sip on a beer and stare at the scenery! So relaxing!

I am reading up on the game trail camera instructions to see if it will capture video. Probably just a switch! It is exciting to see animals that my security cameras cant catch. And thank you again so much for the cameras John! Did you set yours up yet? In Colorado we would get maybe 1-2 foggy days and I absolutely loved it. I understand where you are coming from. Back in the 90's my sister made the observation that when my house becomes really 'unorganized' i get overwhelmed and i shut down. Since then i try to stay on top of things but there are many times that it happens. Currently we are redoing some things in our house and i don't have systems in place where to put things so things have piled up and i am feeling overwhelmed again not knowing where to start. I can hear my sisters voice "one step at a time" and plus my hubby is helping me this weekend. Hang in there and forgive yourself. Now i love chai so thank you again for another recipe for me to try! I think we all like to have things nice and tidy and when we have no outlet to make that happen we get thrown for a loop! Like why bother because I have no place to put things. The good thing is we always find a way or the way opens to us again. Construction or moving is just a darn good excuse to shut down and wait it out. Just hard to do sometimes. And having your hubby help out is awesome! I will have a long winter to get my cabin in order. My son will help me move things where they need to be, remodel my kitchen and remove the bathroom fixtures. Then its just up to me. But if I don't have it done by end of winter, send help!! LOL! HOW EXCITING!!!! So fun your things will be there after a year living there. Your flashback had me in tears, it's a LOT to go through living in turmoil. I did it for two years! Give yourself some credit for your accomplishments and your diligence and maybe a little space for leeway to relax. I wanted things to be just so but finally realized I would never get there living here. It's a journey, not a destination and once you get your stuff, you will feel things starting to solidify. You'll have plenty time this winter to get yourself "squirreled" away (sorry for the pun😉). I call it 'camping Gringa style'. Chautauqua (as in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance) ♥

I have certainly done a lot of things this summer. Way more than I had originally planned but I knew the first couple years would be crazy. Just arriving and having to spend that first winter worrying about my roof collapsing was tough but dealing with the rodents really put a damper on things. No way through it but to do it! I will have a very long winter to spend arranging and re-arranging my place. My son and I still have to remodel the kitchen and tear down the bathroom and indoor plumbing. But having/getting these things done has helped me relax a bit. You know, getting that "must do" list completed just so I can live a bit better. Also having my furniture and belongings has helped tick one more big project off the list. But I do spend time just sitting out back and enjoying the scenery. Sip on a beer and forget about work or construction and just listen to Kenai snoring! Thank you so much Teri!

One of my sons who is working overseas just called me as I went to open your video! So we're definitely on the same page of long distance son-hood lol! And sister, I had the exact same feeling about "icky zones" in my first house up here. 40 years as a once a year vacation house, built in 1880, Sonny and Cher wallpaper, and vermin. Once overnight I found my rubber chore boots filled with spruce cones, and the next morning- gone!. It was like a rodent metropolis (they'd take the Tomcat pellets and make nests with them) i had cringe zones too!! And that was a great chai recipe!! In one job post I would tear up chai teabags and add the contents to blondie dough! Gurl...that is some goodness!!! Ok, gotta go work the woodpile and then load hay! Rodents have a way of messing things up don't they! When the two back doors were cut out, we found stores of pine cones and mushrooms. No wonder that squirrel wanted back in so bad! I managed to get rid of most of the mice and voles with the flour/baking soda mixture but the squirrel is a different story. He/she thinks the cabin belongs to them! Luckily it has left my cabin alone since the roof was redone but I expect it back any day now! Blondie dough chai! That sounds delicious! Hmmm? Speaking of wood pile, I have 3 cords just dropped off! Before I put all my belongings into storage (that I didn't want to take with me) it was so nice to give/get ride of stuff. Stuff I had been holding on to for decades! I just didn't have the time to do a yard sale so I would just put stuff out on the curb with a free sign and you know, people came by and took every single item I put out there. Bags of dirt, scrap wood, broken yard tools! Some items I gave to neighbors and coworkers too. So then I open the Uhaul and I am finding boxes of stuff that I was happy I had saved (because I forgot) and some boxes of stuff that I am still scratching my head about! But I refuse to clutter my cabin so I may have to start giving stuff away again. I am sure there is a place around that I can donate too. I could do a "remote Alaska" yard sale but I don't think that would bring in many people! Thank you so much Cindy! Oh and you will meet my son in the next video! Hopefully this week!

One of the few good things about my first tour to Iraq was my introduction to the possibilities of hot tea. I know this sounds cliché but there was actually a rug merchant, from Turkey as I recall, and he drank tea like it was going out of style. One of the guys from the shop and I would go there, especially during inclement weather. (Northeast Iraq or Kurdistan as it should properly be named, imo, has some pretty chilly, wet, and windy winters. The stories I could tell lol...) At any rate, this rug merchant would serve us various teas and chai was one of them. I fell in love with hot tea in general and Chai, particularly. Since I was attached to that expeditionary unit a "onesy" from from my parent unit, I was there w/o any of my squadron mates from home. When I returned home, I raised some eyebrows when I'd be carrying a traveling mug with Chai or even other teas because I was known to not be a coffee drinker. I had a Captain ask about smelling the Chai and I made him a mug of the bagged stuff that I'd buy, Bigelow I think. He approved. Lol Anyway, Chai is good, as long as the black pepper and clove doesn't dominate the other flavors. I like it because, like a good wine, Chai should have subtle and bold flavors that complement one another. Teas and wine should be viewed as kindred spirits (no pun intended) imo.

Hello Chris! I think I have spoiled myself since I learned to make Chai. I could fine tune it to taste exactly the way I like it. Don't get me wrong, I love my coffee but sometimes tea (especially Chai) can really make my morning! I do like regular tea as well like black tea or Earl Grey. I would think the tea you had in Kurdistan was some top of the line tea! Although I have tried the tea bag Chai and its not bad, just a bit mild for me. Chai does need to be balanced correctly when made but WOW is it great tea. But I have had my share of (OMG! Too much ....this or that)I only cook with wine so I will have to take your word on that! Thank you so much Chris! Oh and you have some stories to tell, you should be telling them!

I have heard that we are supposed to have a bad winter here this year. But after last year with the snow load almost collapsing my roof, I think it will be no problem. Good morning Alone! I'm so glad you get to spend time very soon with your son and his friend. My sons will be here this afternoon (it's Sunday morning here) for a meal and to celebrate their birthday. I put meat in teriyaki marinade yesterday, and we are having shish kebabs. This morning I've harvested mint for fresh iced tea, thyme, parsley and lavender for the potato salad which is currently cooking, The dogs are fed and out for their morning run in the yard. I quite understand the frustration of the never endingness of cleaning when the mess just keeps multiplying. I've got a dog sitter coming next weekend so I can go to a history seminar, and I need to have my floors clean before she arrives. It will happen. A friend offered me the opportunity to go potato and bean picking at her parent's farm this weekend, so that may also happen. If it does, then I need to spend tomorrow canning beans and potatoes for winter. Potatoes do NOT store well in my home, so I'm always thinking about how to preserve them to use later. If I can them, I will be able to reheat, mash and season and have instant mashed potatoes through the winter season. If they last until spring, I can use them to make potato salad, which my nephew loves. I believe that I'm finally caught up at work after three weeks of chaos. Nothing makes a person more stressed than having incessant meetings during the time you need to be working on the very thing you are being yelled at for not completing! Just shut up already and let me get my work done. On a brighter note, the boss agreed that we need an additional person in my room first, because I have an escape artist, who runs every time one of us goes to the restroom, or to the copy machine. He's going to be in interviews all day Tuesday and hopes to hire an additional seven people as aides to children who are in constant motion, or who self-injure, or need toileting assistance. I'm the classroom teacher, and I'm the one who is usually taking kids to toilet who cannot be trusted to take care of their own toileting needs. We have one young man who will only go with me, because I don't talk down to him for not being able to use the toilet. We stay very matter of fact, deal with the mess, and move forward. We've reduced his time in the bathroom from 45 minutes to 15 over the last week, which is a huge accomplishment! Blessings on your time with your son. I hope it is enjoyable and productive for all of you!

Hello Deb! Oh now you did it! You mentioned teriyaki kebabs! I hope the birthday meal was delicious and the conversation awesome! There were many times when my kids would just keep making messes even after I had just cleaned. That was a good time to give them chores!! I even had Kenai clean up his bones! I wish I would be invited to collect beans and potatoes! I am lucky to have a pitch dark root cellar to store root veggies! And I certainly will! And I hear you about meetings! I've had jobs that made me go to training and meetings so often, I couldn't manage my teams correctly. the corporate world just doesn't make sense sometimes. So happy I am out of it! And Deb you sound like a fantastic teacher! We need more teachers like you! My son and I have been busy busy! But we have taken time to do some sight seeing already. Heck just going to Home Depot is a 10 hour sight seeing trip! But it is nice to cook for him again too! And he will be cooking my favorite meal too....on video! Thank you so much Deb!

Hello Alone. Regarding your motivation(lack of) to make order of chaos : Thank you for reminding me that I need a cabin 12'X16" or maximum 16"X20". By Alaska standards you live in a house. A lot a house for one person. A lot to clean. A lot to remodel . A lot to repair. I don't know if crossed your mind, at the beginning , right after you bought the property, that might be simpler and less expensive to build a small new cabin. Easier to manage, to clean that will force you over time to learn to live with less. I was a rat pack, that I liked to call myself a prepper. All was perfect. Until I had to move. Nightmare. I am still a prepper. But I got rid of many things , and I am still in process of doing it. Back to you. I think you have motivation and work ethic. The fact that you chose this path, proves it. The house(yours), is to big for one person. It becomes overwhelming , after a certain size. Then you have the psychological hurdle of the squirrel. The previous tenant . I guess you will end up replacing the sink and the counter tops, and who knows what else if if you cant get over this. Remember the bleach. Helps not only to sanitize but it helps psychologic. Can't wait to see your son. Ah! Yes. Second time : Thank you , for confirming my suspicion. That is , parents and grandparents , they do have a preferred child or grandchild. But society norm forces people to say that they love their children and/or grandchildren , equal. They do. But not having children, I always suspected that some children are more equal than others. I wonder from whom your son got the joking side and from whom got the short fuse side. I will stop right here, before I get in trouble. Men call this : foot and mouth disease. This was a joke. Anyway , he will help you. Thanks for your time. Take care.

Hello Mario! You are not kidding that this cabin is just a bit too big for one person. I knew this when I purchased it. I think the issue with having such a big cabin is it will just look so sparsely decorated. I do not plan on filling every nook and cranny with useless tables or plants and vases Most of what I had brought up from my storage unit was furniture and tools. Oh and canning supplies! Oh and (4) 55 gallon open top barrels for water storage. No appliances or nick nack curios etc. But since I have no closets in this cabin, I am sure glad I saved my dressers! One thing I remember while watching people on KZbin that had built cabins, sheds, chicken runs and gardens. Every single one said they wish they had built bigger. Build as big as you can afford or have space for. Advice given from newbies and old timers. It's awesome that you are a prepper. I will be technically as well I suppose. I have a huge 30x30 root cellar and I have all kinds of plans besides canning storage and root veggie storage. What it wont be is a storage unit for boxes and boxes of stuff I forgot I had decades ago. Actually I got rid of so much stuff before putting things into storage. As for the squirrel issue, the entire kitchen island was always going to be ripped out anyway so I never spent too much time trying to make it "nicer". The rest of the rooms are simply removing the carpet. Never really liked carpet anyway. As for favorite kids/grandkids I have seen it myself with other families. Sometimes I think it goes too far. My son that decided to take a month off of work to make sure I got my stuff and wants to spend a couple weeks remodeling my kitchen and bathroom certainly gets bonus points but I do love all my children equally. I don't have any grandkids yet so we will see how that goes! My son definitely got his sense of humor from me. When he lived with me in Colorado, we would spend hours just cracking each other up over nonsense. He doesn't have a quick fuse (besides the normal teenage years) but I certainly do not have a quick fuse either. We can be stubborn though and I did raise my kids to be independent. Thank you so much Mario!

I've heard of Chai but had no idea what it even was lol So I'm guessing that your son is either very close or he's already there by now, I'm sure that you're super excited about him coming and having access to all of your things, I can certainly relate to not having desirable surfaces to put anything on, when we first bought the property in Maine there was a farmhouse on it ,but it was in seriously rough shape and in need of repair, including jacking the roof up to get it back into the proper position to reinforce it, the snow loads over the years had warped it and broken threw and created water damage etc. All below into the other rooms etc. But we took it one room at a time my uncle and I ,and we made due as we went along with the renovation, but before ya know it, they'll be more better spots to place your things than not, enjoy your visit and remember you have two other people there temporarily to help with the heavy projects that you might want to conquer, such as moving that oil tank 😉

Chai is probably available at 7-11 Mike! No seriously! My son is here now. Since Wednesday. It has been crazy unloading the monster Uhaul and I found stuff I totally forgot I put in storage! We will make a run into Anchorage to pick up some items needed to get started on remodeling my kitchen and bathroom. Basically tearing it all down to basically nothing. Sounds like you know exactly what I have been going through. My roof was most likely one winter away from what you experienced! It is SOOO nice to see rooms slowly get to a point that I feel ok to use. One room at a time. Kenai is so happy to see my son I think he paces between the both of us to make sure he gives us both equal attention! That oil tank is still almost full of 200-300 gallons of oil, so I will be burning the oil heater more this winter to make sure it can be moved next Spring. Thank you so much Mike!

Since we just got too busy this week, I will do his Q&A video next week. It really is nice to have all my furniture here and to have some dressers!! I had a lot of tools in there as well. Oh and (4) 55 Gallon open top plastic barrels for water storage! Luckily I have a long winter a head of me so I can take some time and sort my cabin out properly! Thank you so much Holly! 🧡🤗💚
