With Dr Ratan I believe the order she suggested was alpha r butin, niacinamide, Magnesium Ascorbyl phosphate (vitamin C) derivative, Rentinoid followed by azelaic acid and moisturise. Remember to wait at least a few minutes between each layer or at least until each layer feels absorbed. Only incorporate in night time routine and if new to retinoids use between 1-2 times a week in the in initial stages. Always patch test behind ears and introduce products slowly.

I have been using the Ordinary's Alpha Arbutin and Hyaluronic Acid for two months now and it has really faded my dark spots from acne scarring and the hyperpigmentation on my face. I can see a difference. I still have more time to go until the hyperpigmentation is completely gone, but as she mentioned it works very slowly.

It’s important to note that alpha arbutin doesn’t get rid of hyperpigmentation that is always present but helps to diminish the onset of new dark spots/marks. I think that’s why some people say it doesn’t really help remove their spots.

Kamela Jameel I have a mustache of hyperpigmentation! I actually have to color correct my upper lip under make up. I’ve been using the alpha Arbutin from the ordinary for 2 weeks straight 2xs a day followed by their lactic acid on my upper lip 30 minutes in between while I cook and eat dinner, and I can see the difference. It took about 2 weeks. At this rate I think it will be gone in 2 months. I cleanse my skin every day 2xs a day and exfoliate 1x week. I feel like I can’t do too many things at the same time because I get overwhelmed and I like to know what is working and what’s not. You can’t do that if using too many products. Right now I’m targeting my upper lip. Once that gets better, then I plan to use the alpha arbutin and lactic acid only M-W-F. And anti-aging products T-Th-Sa.

I'm 31 and ever since I got my period (I don't remember what age) I have suffered from acne and thanks to my love for tanning when I was a teen I have had discoloration and malasma due to sun damage. I never thought my skin would look perfect... For Christmas i got a gift card to Ulta and I decided to get all skin care products to finally take care of my skin, I got the Ordinary's Niacinamide, alpha arbutin, and their moisturizer with HA. The niacinamide made my skin purge for 3 weeks but now I have no breakouts or little bumps at all and the alpha arbutin has cleared up all of the sun spots and damage and helped clear up any scars I had from my battle with acne. My advice with the alpha Arbutin is don't rub it in all the way, I apply it to my face and then pat my skin lightly and let my face absorb the product on its own and I have had such great results by doing it that way. Over all the ordinary is an amazing brand! I've never found products that work so well and for such a small price....

However I also have very dry skin on my legs as a result of the condition, and that same KZbin’s recommended Dermal Therapy AHA+Urea lotion. Been using that for the last 2 years. My skin has stopped itching and the condition has not returned. My legs are smooth. During the summer months I I use it on damp skin right after I shower. Hi Dr, thank you so much for this series on hyperpigmentation. I have been diagnosed with scleroderma overlap dermititis 🙉 whatever that means... I have a skin discoloration with hyperpigmentation. My routine is all over the place I think. In the morning I cleanse with Kiehl's clearly corrective exfoliating cleanser, then tone with either fresh rose petals or Caudalie moisturiser toner, then black tea essence from fresh, clearly corrective serum, hydro-plumping serum and SPF moisturiser. Evening : same cleanser, serozinc mist, vitamin C suspension from the ordinary, azaleic acid from the ordinary, then vinoperfect serum, vinoperfect moituriser, then complete with squalane oil from the ordinary... I feel like I am doing too much. Once a week I also use epidermal re-texturing micro dermabrasion from Kiehl's and glycolic peel mask from Caudalie. This is a lot. But only because I didn't see any improvement using the Dermovate prescribed by my dermatologist. Please note that I am based in UK. Can you advise pretty please ? Many thanks. 🌹

Would love to see a video breakdown on alpha arbutin vs azaleic acid.. which is best to use for Hyperpigmentation can both be used in a regimen ...if so where do you put retinol in the regimen? Can you put Azaelic and / or alpha arbutin on top of retinol night

Thank you for another great video. I feel like Alpha Arbutin is one of those ingredients people don't really think works but a lot of the time, they expect to see results after just a few uses or at best, by the time they've finished up one bottle (talking about TO's 30ml bottle). It might take 2-3 bottles if used daily/ day and night to see results because it is so gentle but a lot of people I come across on this platform don't necessarily have the patience to see it work. Though, that could be said for a lot of things in skincare...🤷🏾‍♀️

I agree. I’m a quick results person or I give up. I don’t have hyperpigmentation except for recently with one zit. I used TO serum bottle, lasted for a month. Didn’t have any results and so in my mind it didn’t work, lol.

I can't believe I haven't seen your channel before. I just ordered the alpha arbutin from the Ordinary and the niacinamide so this is perfect Haha. I plan to be a dermatologist in the future and I think it's important to learn about the unique treatment plans for people with darker skin tones even though I have a light skin tone, especially in dermatology textbooks. So happy to find your channel!

Thanks for an informative video Dr. Stephens! You keep mentioning sunscreen in your videos. A video specifically on sunscreen would be GOLD!. I have used sunscreen pretty much everyday for the past few years, but I do not re-apply, I use chemical sunscreens, and I find that my face is much darker than the rest of my body, which I do not use sunscreen on. It could be the paradoxical hyper-pigmentation as I use acids and other actives. I don't think my sunscreens are working!

Any recommendations on a salicylic acid body wash vs liquid form like Paula’s BHA for body acne? I have old acne scars on my shoulders and blackheads on my back that I cannot reach. Are there permanent ways to get rid of blackheads with office procedures?

Thank you Doctor for this content. I've tried the ordinary alpha arbutin it made break out like never before in my life. I've used for over a month because I thought I was purging It was really bad I had to stop. My skin actually got worse now I've a lot of hyperpigmentation after all those pimples.
