Actually (glasses pushed up) nobody in the studio thought he was cheating. There was a documentary about this some years back, and I’ve also had the good fortune to meet and work with actual network executives who were there when it happened. The idea that somebody might memorize the patterns had been brought up when the series was in development, and the concern was always dismissed with a “Pfft, what are the odds of THAT happening?” In that studio, while he was doing what he did, the reaction in the control room was closer to “Oh shit, he’s done it.” They knew immediately.

Yeah as a huge game show fan it always bothers me when people say he cheated. Even calling a scandal seems like a falsehood. I mean sure the producers were shocked but it wasn't in disgust but shock of he he was able to notice the pattern and use it. This was concerning as they felt like he could have cheated but figured out he just studied the pattern so much that he could use it to win a huge prize. I'm pretty sure that after this they changed the pattern to be a lot more random so it showed that he really just exposed a flaw in the show and wasn't cheating.

@@scalzmoneyI’m guessing the time affects it, we have significantly less interest in the Kennedys or the us presidents in general, there’s no reason we’d care too much about the widow of one. She wasn’t that much of a celebrity here, I only knew it from references in American TV, it’s unnecessary information about pop culture that isn’t ours. That’s the thing. It’s one thing to be able to hit a button at home on your vcr, where you lose nothing when you get it wrong. To be fair, Micheal Larson just used the patterns that he found in the show and used them to his advantage. Technically they don't. Show like Millionaire that have huge top prizes that are rarely won take out insurance policies on the jackpot. I'm sure Millionaire, at the very least, has insurance against more than 1 person a season winning. It was rare enough that many seasons didn't feature a top prize winner so it is even possible a single win in a season is partially covered by insurance. This also means that anyone that does win is going to be looked at very carefully because we all know insurance companies do not like to pay.
@J.C...
@J.C... Жыл бұрын
@@jeremywj their policy actually paid out up to 5 million. The insurance company paid all prizes of 500k and 1 million. The deductible on this policy is/was also 1.5 million, so the show still had to pay out a HUGE deductible. The ins company ended up suing the show because they said the questions were too easy so too many people were winning and they were losing too much money. Not sure when that was or the outcome, though. So I'm sure that means they're using a different company now and a, as a result, a different policy.

And Drew Carey, host, was absolutely certain that there was something inside going on as how Terry Kniess got that Showcase bid exactly right, so Drew basically said in an interview, "smoke this, this might not even air"; when it did, and Terry's bid was shown as being exactly right, Drew undersold it, because he probably didn't think that Terry could get the prices so correct down to the penny. People have criticized Drew for underselling it, but, to be honest, I can't blame him, because in all the years before that, no one, but no one, got a Showcase bid exact (many have gotten one-bids exactly right, and some have gotten small prize guesses in pricing games exactly right, but no one did it with a Showcase up until then).

@@XCodeHelpHub Larson _didn't_ cheat - he played within the show's rules, using the show's equipment & didn't deceive or lie to win. In the casino world he's what's referred to as an _"advantage player"..._ like a card counter in blackjack he studied the system, found the advantage (the programming of the prize board) & trained to utilise it. It didn't guarantee him an outcome - it increased his chances within the scope of the game's rules. Ingram was 100% a cheat because he got outside assistance to guarantee a win, which is very much against the rules.

In light of the quiz show scandals, networks not only implemented a policing system called "Standards and Practices" to ensure that no cheating is being done, and that the games are kept fair and random. They also implemented limits on how many times or days a contestant can be on a show, how much money they can win or both. NBC limited the amount of days or times they can be on a show. ABC limited the amount of times or days to five and implemented a limit on winnings like: 1972- $20,000 and 1982- $50,000. CBS implemented several limits on winnings seen here: 1972-1978: $25,000 1978-1982: $25,000-$35,000 1982-1984: $25,000-$50,000 1984-1986: $50,000-$75,000* (* denotes hard cap on winnings being implemented after Michael Larson took CBS and "Press Your Luck" for $110,237) Also starting on top of the $50,000-$75,000* they put limits on how many times a player can be on a show usually five days with "Body Language" imposing a six day limit. 1986-1992: $75,000-$100,000* 1992-2006: $125,000* Since 2006 there is no limit on winnings.

I remember the Charles Ingram incident really annoyed the BBC as a very popular sitcom called One Foot in the Grave was having its last ever show on the exact same time slot as Millionaire on ITV when the whole British public knew they would be watching the first ever million pound winner and because Millionaire was so popular at the time the final show of One Foot in the Grave lost a lot of viewers because people choose to watch a bloke answering general knowledge questions and blatantly cheating. The Press your Luck guy at one point I remember hearing that Bill Murray was going to play him in a movie about the incident but it never happened
@davecommentator
@davecommentator Жыл бұрын
That wasn't actually the case - the first million pound winner did indeed broadcast at the same time as the last One Foot in the Grave, but it was Judith Keppel, not Charles Ingram. That did lead to a few conspiracy theories that Keppel's win was rigged to lure TV viewers away from the BBC though!
