Thank you this is very useful. I like the part about dealing with what's affecting them most at the moment and how other things can fall away if you get to the bottom of that.

Unfortunately, I found this a bit late, after filming my level 1 counselling skills, which I struggle to apply all these amazing skills that you taught here. Nevertheless, from now on and in the future, I will be able to use these amazing skills, because of the way you thoroughly explained it. Thanks a lot...

Great points and one important thing to add is " proximics ". Don't sit your client further than 1.5 metres away. It makes them feel isolated. And never have a desk between you or have a better chair then your client. Set up proximics is critical along with lighting and quiet

Empathetic listening is key. Some people in the field pass thinly-concealed judgements on their clients and make all manner of assumptions under the implied guise that ‘they know you better than you know yourself.’ It often comes from a place of genuinely-good intentions but you’ve just got to be careful when it comes to how you interact with clients in that sense. You’ve got to let them talk because it’s more about them than you.

yes Junot, you are right -- the reaction is from the therapist to the client, so this is COUNTER TRANSFERENCE NOT Transference.

"They know their own truths". What does this mean? They know how they feel? (This is not always true). They know what they need to do? (This is not always true). Are you saying both...they know how they feel and what needs to be done, but need time to describe and accept it, and need your support (validation, clarification)
