Angry Customer Destroys Gamestop Because He Couldn't Return Fallout 76 (Footage)

A customer at an undisclosed GameStop location attempted to return a copy of Fallout 76.. Due to the fact that it was an open, new game (without a receipt), he was told he could not receive a refund for Fallout 76. There is absolutely nothing antiquated about the return policy. If they allowed return of opened games then brick and mortar game stores would be extinct within a year. People would constantly be buying and returning games after blowing through it within a day. Steam can get away with it because 1. its digital. They don't have an open physical they have to get rid of on a loss. 2. They can track how long you played and won't refund if you played more than 2 hours. Game stores have no way of tracking that. Do your damn research before buying a game. Companies like EA and now Bethesda wont put out unfinished garbage if nobody buys the unfinished garbage.

Gamestops return policy is just fine. If you opened the game, it is no longer new. Just like where i work, we do not let you borrow a lighter to light your cigarette. If you use a product, it is no longer new. If you dont like gamestops personal buissness choices, then dont shop there. Yeah, steam has a fantastic policy. But with digital games you can actually keep track of how much they've been playing. You also know that the game was directly purchased from the place you're trying to return it to. Never mind that GameStop isn't going to keep hundreds or even thousands of dollars on hand to refund unsatisfied customers. GameStop is a distributor, not a video game creator. It is not GameStop's fault for selling a game that you don't like. Blame those who are actually responsible. Here's a hint, their company logos are on the back of the box.

You are right. Online/Digital stores have advantages and can do stuff that is not possible for "real-life" stores. The "real-life" stores have other advantages and I think they should focus on improving these advantages instead of trying to copy the advantages of online/digital stores, which is going to be much harder for them (and sometimes not possible). E.g. when I already know what I want to buy, most of the time I buy it online because of better price. If I want something on the same day or if I need some help/advice which product is the best for my needs I go to a "real life" store. But since most of the "real-life" stores are cutting costs they often have employees who now nothing about the stuff they are selling, then there is nearly no advantage left for the "real life" stores over online/digital stores. If gamestop would offer you to play test a title in the shop for a limited time then there would be no need for a refund policy apart from same day (or next day) return, because the game is not running on the own computer. But I personally never had big problems with games if my computer met the required system specs apart from the anti-piracy system of CD/DVD-Games.

I work at a small game store and we have the same return policy as GameStop. The owner and I are the only people who work at the moment, and we have a lot of people try to use us as a game rental store. They buy the new game, come back a day later, and want to return it. We can’t stay in business if we allow those refunds every time. For a $60 game, we pay $55.86. Hopefully this gives a little insight on why the refund policy is like this.

Thanks for the feed back guys, my comment comes from the general attitude I see from millenial gamers, "this is what I deserve, this is what I want, this is why you need to give it to me, this is why you suck at your job objectively speaking, this is why, I an unemployed amature can do your job better than you." When we were young we were happy and grateful to stores and developers for creating something we loved, they put Mario in front of us and we were appreciative to have something to play even though Mario wouldn't at all pass as a viable franchise among the entitled gamers of today. Forums, social media, and first world luxuries have made us more important in our own minds than we are. Most people treat games as a custom made experience and not a vision and collaboration of artists. The rights and desires of a game are completely in the hands of creators and companies, as it should be since they are putting in their time to make something from nothing, a game is not a tailor made for your unique needs and wants transaction, it is a product given for consumption. When I was a kid we ate what was put in front of us, there wasn't a second option, if you don't eat it than go without, this humbleness and contentment is largely lost on this generation.

Not really an antiquated policy. And it’s not just GameStop. You can’t buy a new game anywhere, go home and play it, then return it a day, a week, or however long later and expect to get your money back. Once you open the wrapper, it’s not “new” anymore. If you drive a new car off the lot, it immediately ceases to be new, the value depreciates immediately.

This is the common policy though, not being able to return an opened game unless it is defective. The game loses value immediately. I mean it looks like they were still trying to help, just not give him cash back. Part of the problem is that Gamestop still sells "New" unsealed games which creates issues with this policy.

I wouldn't call their return policy antiquated, many retailers don't allow you to return opened media. The exception is usually an exchange for a defective item. Okay, now technically, Fallout 76 is a defective item, but not in the sense that would warrant an exchange.

I stopped going to them after i went to buy a new game, they didn't have any copies so the guy walked over and got the display copy and pulled the disk out of a sleeve and put it in the box, then went onto to try to make me pay $60 plus tax for it. The game is out of the case, it's opened, by their own policy, it should be a used game at that point, nope. He tried to guarantee it was a brand new game, but i wasn't having it. If we take it out of the plastic, it's no longer is a new game, then the same should be used for them as well.

I don’t think it is fair for the GameStop (or any retailer of physical game copies) to have to take the hit on someone “not liking” a game and wanting to return what was new and now used game. They lose profit and isn’t fair. If anything there should be policies in place that the Dev has to take the hit. I agree the game was opened. I assume. I think there is a 30 day return policy for unopened new games at gamestop. Once it's opened I don't consider it new. I refuse to buy gutted copies of games. People feel if they don't like the item why should they be stuck with it? Sometimes you take a risk. Steam allows returns because they are digital. There is no way anyone can get a used digital copy. If a person isn't sure they'll like a game what a month for reviews or for a college student to sell the copy they're parents bought for them to gamestop for weed money.

Here's a story I bought a brand new ps4 control on pro day at a discount which is why I bought it. Turns out it's defective but I didn't realize until I actually used it a few days later. So I go into GameStop with my receipt to exchange it. Here's the twist, because it was no longer on sale they wanted me to pay the difference to exchange a defective product. Ridiculous! I've heard a lot of negative things about GameStop but never had an issue until then. I just cancelled all my preorders got all my money back and started downloading games straight from the psn. Amazon has everything at a cheaper price anyways.

Here in Australia, EB Games allows you to return a game up to 7 days after purchase, whether it's still sealed or not. (not sure if it's the same in Canada). Trouble with that is, opened & returned games are sold again as 'brand new'. Personally I never buy games from EB unless they're sealed as you never know if someone else had previously returned it.

the employees are practically, sometimes literally, coerced into selling used games over new ones because they make no money off of selling them from what I understand. Therefore it's not outside the realm of reason to think that one or more the employees or managers tried to pass off a used game as a new one, especially if it was returned immediately in "like new" condition not considering the ability to earn trophies being revoked.
