I read somewhere this used to be a courtship tactic in England also: offering food to one's crush for a meal. Exotic fruits cost $$$ to import and since deer need a large amount of grazeland, one had to either be wealthy enough to afford a huge estate or else on very good terms with someone who was, in order to gift one's crush with venison.
