Unfortunately, even if their "fans" knew what was allegedly happening bts and that the members were actually quite happy with the new concept change, they would've reacted the same way because they don't really care about what the girls want. Their fans obviously only cared about themselves and what they wanted for the group.
@HetaClaude3 жыл бұрын
i think early 2010s was an age where fans wouldn't really care about what the group would've wanted. they didn't care for what the idols themselves felt, and thought that the idols' personal feelings shouldn't get in the way of the group's development. if they debuted this year no doubt that whatever fans they would've had *would* actually rally against the company for the girls to get the freedom they deserve. early 2010s fandom atmosphere is really... bad i think, so it was inevitable that the group had crashed and burned the way it did.

As someone who was something of a tomboy myself, I remember being super excited about GI when they debuted. We were basically promised a group full of confident girls who didn't care about gender norms and who just were themselves, but instead we got a group of girls who were so clearly uncomfortable with the way they were being presented. I remember watching their debut MV thinking, "this isn't what a tomboy is, this is just girls in boys clothing, those are two different things." Being a "tomboy" isn't just about the way you dress, it's much more about your personality and your interests and it was always clear to me and many others that the GI members were not really tomboys. I'm honestly surprised there were people who didn't see through that and genuinely thought the girls were being forced to be "more feminin" later on. It must have been so difficult for the girls to have to put up with all that. I hope they are doing well now.

This whole situation with Global Icon is really sad, as I feel like a genuine tomboy group in 2013 would have been so empowering for fans. I was a fan of GI from the beginning and the group (along with Amber) not only hooked me into Kpop but also helped me come to terms with my own queerness. I finally had SOMEONE in media that I actually felt I could relate to! While they were still in their original concept, I did see an interview of the girls where ARam and AI said that they were genuine tomboys but the other 3 were not, and it felt super unfair for everyone involved to force the girls into the concept. But I guess even that was not the full truth. Just a shame all around. Don't Lie is still a bop though.
@katie59202 жыл бұрын
I'm sad that they were forced to do this but also I can't stand the commenters, being a tomboy doesn't make you a lesbian and it's not pushing "gay culture" they act like they had never seen a woman with short hair, wearing pants and ect... They still looked femine to me, just a bit tomboyish and that's it.
@katie59202 жыл бұрын
Though regardless of the concept, idols many have been pushed into doing the same no matter if it's sexy, cute, tomboy or whatever. So this is nothing new, at least they tried something different though. (Well before they made them into the same as every other girl group) it would have been an amazing idea if they had gotten women who wanted to do that concept and the company stuck to it.
@seolemn3 жыл бұрын
I never thought that there's a possibility of a tomboy charm being a key part of a group's "concept". It's so weird and sick to think about how they will utilize things as gender/sexuality and gender expression for lack of better words -- entertainment purposes. I genuinely hope that active members that fall under this category are simply living their authentic selves! And If we look onto another perspective, this can be another opportunity for idols to express their style/behavior freely because being marketed/presented into a box of fragile and sexy (male gaze), which I observed from the previous generations of girl groups, isn't better either. It extends to a more open and inclusive space, so to speak but it's tragic that it leads for some to be forced, caused unhappiness, and identity crisis. I feel sorry for them to go through "deprogramming" it shouldn't be taken to such extremes!

through my pov, GI has had a tough time all through their career. they had to switch their personalities so many times and not all fans were supporting either... masculine side or feminine, their music have always been awesome (from the clips I hear in this video) Obviously as mentioned, the group has disbanded and the members are living a normal life but if I was in the first place as a fan, I'd love each and every concept they ever had because they are (were) working hard and it is almost impossible to get the perfect personality switch becoming an idol is really tough and tbh I think kpop idols have even tough time (not that I'm saying non kpop idols don't suffer) I support GI and they have talent... judging anyone without knowing the whole story can effect anyone

It seems extra cruel that the "video" for Echo shows the transformation. Edited to add: OMG the timeline! I love the timeline in your video and how it tracks what you're talking about! My Type A heart craaaves order

When I tell you that Global Icon was a favorite group of mine...I even bought their album, but when Aram left, who was my fave, left, I KNEW something was off. I never would have known it was crazy like this.

I’m a tomboy all day and I absolutely love Global Icon! It’s so sad they didn’t get enough support.

My dad wanted a son and so he dressed me like a boy. It was really annoying. My baby photos were literally in a suit... I feel for the girls.

This was a wonderful documentary. I'd never heard of this group before, but the title looked interesting. It was! Good job!

This is a perfect example of how fans need to stop saying idols are uncomfortable on stage (either in an outfit or during a dance) just because they (the fans) are uncomfortable. We NEVER know what’s going on behind the scenes. And FYI, a woman pulling her dress or bottoms down while dancing DOES NOT mean she’s uncomfortable, they do ride up when moving

The SECOND I saw Jinsil from BLASTAR in that one clip I remembered how and why I knew GI. I loved BLASTAR so much, I was with them at their debut and I was part of their fandom. I miss them, their company allegedly disbanded them because they asked for more promotion stages for their debut song One Way, tehy only got two. They sang live, Jinsil choreographed the song by herself, and One Way is like my favorite song. I miss them I hope all the members of BLASTAR and of GI the best!

I liked GI so much that I actually got their debut album signed. But it sucks to know that the tomboy concept was forced upon them.

i was sooooo in love with G.I. back then... but i prefer the members happiness, instead of being stuck in a concept that makes them unhappy

No joke, GI were * mwah*. Theor songs beatles and booshit were immaculate. I need more music like that in kpop, but aye~~

Honestly I don't like how the fans were saying that stuff,THEY WERE FORCED to be like that,I think the concept switch was a good choice from the company since that was what the girls wanted

They actually looked forced tho? You know when a girl exudes that tomboy energy without having to change their appearance or whatever like for example Moonbyul. Even dressing feminine, she still exudes this cool energy and that is why fangirls are attracted to her

I know you didn’t meant to offend anyone and that you were probably not that serious about this, but JUST IN CASE I’m incorrect about that, she does not own the tomboy concept.

@@MindNCanvas Own it is slang for it suits her. She's basically saying that Amber suits the tomboyish style and concept.

You aren't wrong, persay, but for Amber, it's not a concept. She's just naturally pretty tomboyish.

I’m so glad she’s talking about GI, I grew up with them and I still Stan them to this day, their debut song “Beatles” will always be my favourite song and I always talk about them but my other kpop friends have no clue what I’m talking about, I always forget they’re from a little small underrated company, I also love their company’s boy group “alphabat”
@LH-qn4zm3 жыл бұрын
I remember them well. I was shocked at their debut & my brain was really like, "Oh, a group of Ambers." Anyway, their story is pretty messed up. I hate they were treated like that... On another note, super weird that I was a hard core fan of Alphabat & did not know they were label mates...
@lucasolivdantas3 жыл бұрын
i remember when GI debuted.... their debut song was soooo cool! but i also remember the problematic reality of their concept and the audiences relationship to them... kpop as an industry can be disgusting, this is an example of such

I literally just finished watching your two videos of BLACKSWAN, and now I have to go through this as well. I don't know why I did this to myself. not saying I don't love your videos its just that, I'm just watching it while you're researching and having to make it clear to all of us, so you are probs going through more.

It just sucks that in all of this, the true talent of the girls got lost. Aram is a phenomenal vocalist that never got to flaunt her vocal power, and OneKet is an amazing dancer. They had enough talent to make it as a Kpop group, but wow was GI mismanaged.
@KbgSloEN2 жыл бұрын
I think this concept was cool and music was great. They really pull off their charisma and sexy aura with boyish concept, even if they unwillingly transform themselve into this image. Company was so cruel to treat them dirty like this. All of them weren't a toy to play them whatever you need. They had dream and passion for this career so they made this even if they don't want it
@ThisIsDjYigytugd3 жыл бұрын
I loved GI and was very excited for more music from them, but K-Pop just wasn't ready for a more hip-hop / rap focused girl group. It's unfortunate, they had some great songs.

It's probably an unpopular opinion but I actually really liked Doligo Doligo! I think their company should have disband Global Icon and tedebut them under a different name with that song

androgyny among female idols in china isn't uncommon but when companies start forcing it and monetising off of it, it's strange and uncomfy.
