Sorry to hear about the loss of your beautiful dog. I know how you feel, lost my little Yorkie few years back. Have two rescue dogs now. 2 new fur babies to love but I will never forget the ones that have passed. Love your channel and your journals. Glad to see you back.

It’s the price we pay for that wonderful love. And I think I will always have a dog. I’m just an animal lover. At least I hope I can. This will probably be my last puppy though. I will move on to adult rescues.

Are you afraid you’ll ruin it? Or are you afraid that you spent too much and the pages are precious? I’m curious if you don’t mind elaborating.

@@SharonCullenArt No problem elaborating. I think it's because the pages are too precious. I have an Etchr and I have not even taken it out of the packaging yet. I can work in an Arteza journal a bit easier than my other journals. I feel like if I mess up too many pages of the good paper, I won't be able to afford to do that again if I feel like my art is worthy to be in such an expensive journal. What doesn't help is that I do have a bit of aphantasia. I am not able to see a finished page nor see what to draw in my mind. I hope I was able to explain it.

It is always a bit more difficult when using an expensive sketchbook you don’t want to ruin. When I was beginning with sketchbooks I used cheaper ones, and then I had my ambassadorship with Pentalic that gave me many free sketchbooks. If it is too precious maybe you need to purchase a cheaper one. I say just go for it. 😁

Your sketchbook is beautiful, Sharon.❤ I still aspire to “paint with wild abandon” but my perfectionism holds me back. I should say *I allow it* to hold me back. I have only finished one sketchbook in my almost-68 years, and that was largely due to taking a year-long course with Val Webb. Your videos always inspire me to just get at it again. The only supplies I am wasting are the ones I don’t use. What a painful loss you have been through😢. My heart hurts with you as you remember Diesel. He had such a good life with you.

I am a perfectionist too. I have learned to let it go but. you notice I still put my work down with negative comments. My harp teacher always asks me after completing a song, what about this performance made you feel good? And only after that could I make a negative comment!

Oh Sharon, I am so pleased you ask how do we feel. I have bought lots of sketchbooks that people like you have recommended and not started any of them. I am scared that I am going to spoil them, I am a novice. I just keep them all in cupboards and its no good someone saying just paint or draw what's in front of you etc. I get so anxious and my tummy feels like I am going to be ill so it is much easier to leave them tucked away. I watch you and other artists and would love to over come the anxiety, but I can't 😞

Thanks for taking us all for a stroll through your most recent sketchbook, Sharon.I like the way you approach the question of how to use a sketchbook - you have some pretty darned decent finished pieces in it, naturally, but you also use it for experiments that can be discarded if they're not working out or taken to completion if they are. There are also the workaday swatches etc which have their place, too. I think this aspect of using the sketchbook as a working tool, rather than as a repository of 'our polished work' is something many of us struggle with. The problem of The First Page symbolises this struggle best, of course. You ask in the video if we will all describe our approach to starting a new sketchbook and I have to say I find it extremely daunting. It's almost as if that first page will irrevocably set the tone for the whole book, and thus it becomes a momentous decision-making problem. I'm toying with the idea of overcoming this by deliberately creating a mess of the first page in some anarchic fashion, thus forever discarding any sense of preciousness for that and all subsequent pages. I'll shortly be starting one of my new cotton sketchbooks and i might use this as a way of getting over the problem of the first page. In the meantime, thanks again for a video to enjoy - all the best, Brian.

Sharon, have you watched Sarah Burns latest on her extensive study of gouache? It’s fabulous. Answered a lot of my questions. Also she said the same as you about Himi gouache. I thought it was me, but it was the Himi, I struggle with it. Your sketchbook is very, very nice. Just got the Perfect Sketchbook (that size) as a gift. Stay well, blessings
