He has two (long) videos in which he addresses the subject: one about the history of cheating at The Elite and one about the "lore" of the Frigate level (both fantastic videos). He's right that, at the time, proof moderation was a shitshow, and he was fighting for better standards even at that time, but I don't believe those were his primary reasons for cheating. He was just being a drama queen. That said, this all happened 11 years ago when he was still a teenager, it was only one time (unlike Henning), and he owned up to it shortly after. @@quintoncameron4725 well, when I started playing multiplayer games back in the 90s, I found out I wasn't as good as I thought I would be against real people. I've written, as a journalist, on the problem of MMO games - when all are exceptional, nobody really is. It is hard to be faced with the prospect of never being the best in a field, especially when you're this close. So people either do it the hard way - "git good" - or take a shortcut: fake it. So it's mostly about wanting to be special. As zhengyingli justly stated, the art and science of speedrunning were less important to them than being special.

My Gramps was a big golfer. He told me a story of how he was 1 stroke off a P.B. He chose to lie and tell his golfing buds he had finally done it. A few weeks later he legitimately hit that same score. He was surprised at how much better it felt when he actually hit this score only this time he couldn't brag he had to keep it to himself since he already lied about it. That story always stuck with me. And since he told me that the idea of cheating just seems silly. These are games were talking about and you play them to achieve personal goals. There was a video I watched where a speedrunner showed how he thinks when he plays a game. A lot of speedrunners (or at least, the ones watching record runs and participating in the communities) watch people playing games frame-by-frame paying attention to the smallest details because that's the way they play their games for their speedruns. If something doesn't seem right, they pick it up and can determine what's wrong pretty quickly while the average non speedrunner wouldn't realize something was amiss. That's my theory anyway.

I hope no one actually got mad at you for the intentional splices submitted, especially since you deleted the one that got verified anyway, but there is a such thing as penetration testing. The fact that you've proven it's still possible to splice runs and get away with it so long as it's within human reason, is a good point that the checks for validity do need to be improved upon. Also, this was really informative!

Because in their eyes they did achieve it - they put in the work, the effort, and the video editing to get it to look as seamless as possible, but they actually did do the runs (most of the time). Having to split up your video into parts because of technical issues really isn't something you can blame them for; it's easy to say "get a better computer/recorder/RAM/whatever". I can't say that for all of them, but the ones that got taken down for editing out useless things like autosave animation frames or cutting out bad audio / lag / hangups / softlocks... yeah, shit happens and you do what you can.

As for being a quitter... I always quit if I knew I was losing. On Catan Online, I did it so often people were warning others of me! But the reason for any of these things, is cuz I wanted to win. So that's your answer as to why people cheat.

Hey there! I am a tool-assisted speedrunner, and speedrunner. Splicing in speedrunning, is a huge issuse, obviously, and I love when some gaming communities have rules in place to monitor possible splicing (e.g in Super meat boy with the girl in the corner, or in goldeneye with the curser moving over text). I think all games communities should find ways, when able, to detect splicing. As a TASer, I know just how easy it is to splice. For example, in super mario 64, the number of frames after exiting a level is consistent (usually), and so, a dedicated splicer would know just when and where to cheat. This is where problems arise making it hard to tell is someone is splicing, because both audio and video are silent and completely black. Kudos to all the splice detecting moderators, and I hope in the future, better methods of speedrunning rules can help eliminate or make splicing harder!
@ComaAlpha7 жыл бұрын
Is there a category for individual level/goal speed runs? Like not the whole game by just that specific star.
@TimeTravelPenguinTAS7 жыл бұрын
"IL" runs, or individual levels, is a category on speedrun communities that allow it. In general you can speedrun any level/goal, but when you talk about it being competitive, it all comes down to the community and as to if they want to allow it, or not. For example, the Super Mario 64 speedrun community publish IL speedruns, although they are NOT as competitive a category as the full game categories, so a full speedrun WR may have a faster, or slower time in that level then the IL WR.

I caught MaccaBoards cheating in an Outlast glitchless run. He edited the DefaultGame.ini file to increase his movement speed by about 13%, and he "beat" the at-the-time record by about 20s. When I called him out on this on his KZbin video, he then changed the description to claim "he knows its an illegitimate run, but he did it as a protest" because he was caught pausing his timer in a run that was submitted. But instead of banning him from SRC, we just made a meme category called "Macca%" where we do everything he did, including his movement increase, but put down a time considerably faster than the one he recorded. Sometimes its just more fun to poke fun at the cheaters than to just ban them

Nero Metal I can tell that you don't know me, because if you did, you never would have thought that I didn't. I tried to talk to the guy like a normal dude when he came in my twitch channel. THEN we created the category to make fun of him.

LOL! The "human element of how the game would respond". Wow..... people get desperate when they know they've been caught on their bullshit and try to just bury the conversation under more bullshit. They only end up burying themselves.

I love speedrunning. It’s a lot of fun if you make your own guide and write out a plan for yourself. Obviously I don’t speedrun to the extent that these guys do. So far I’ve written guides and run Resident. Evil 0-5, & 7. Darksouls 1-3 and Bloodbourne. Halo 1,3, 4 and Reach. Currently working on The Evil Within 1&2

overclockeador so? What does it matter if its 1 level or an entire game? I can spend 500 hours on grinding my pokemon. Lol my point is, if youre having fun with it, then what youre doing doesnt matter how much time is spent on it.

That Chibi thing wasn't an honest mistake though. Cheating and then only admitting to it when you are called out is not "honest" and it's not a simple mistake that just happens.

Cheating might be okay in some specific contexts, e.g. cheating in a single player game. But cheating to make it look like you have achieved some kind of record automatically entails lying, since you're trying to convince others that your cheating was actual skill. This is not okay on any level.
@staudinga6 жыл бұрын
Cheating in speedrunning is just sad, there's no noble hacker mentality behind exploiting the poor review processes. If the system is broke, try to fix it, like Apollo Legend, don't try to cheat yourself to a little bit of unearned fame.

Kumquat Lord Meh, he's a hypocrite and half the shit he said in his interview is a lie. "I would, but the sun is on my controller and the screen is too sweaty, I need a better console as well, because this one is just too heavy to play on, and the cameras make the game function slower, it's just not possible to do on camera, or in front of people, or in interviews."

It's stupid cause MAYBE he could get away with it with trying and not succeeding because obviously just because you establish a world record doesn't mean you can easily do it again. Using these pathetic excuses makes it only more suspicious.
