they’ve always been great, they were just too expensive for how quick the batteries would die out overtime, they’d get really hot and loud, the expensive storage increase options, and they’d have OS slowdown overtime. However, imo it was a lot of intels fault for bottlenecking them. I love windows pcs but a mac is a must in my opinion, its such a super smooth and clean experience. Watching movies on the retina displays is great and the speaker are so good for laptops. Macs have ALWAYS been great, they just got a lot better, cleaned up the few cons they had, and finally making that price tag totally worth it.

Some folks have reported playing frickin GTA 5 on the damn thing at Normal-High settings at 50-60fps at 1080p... Again though, this being a first-of-its-kind machine you have to overcome some barriers. There isn't a MacOS version of the game, so you have to create a Steam bottle on CrossOver and play games via a DirectX/Vulkan -> Metal translation layer, and Rosetta & CrossOver handles the CPU part. And then the Rockstar launcher doesn't actually launch, so you have to get a fresh copy of the game off the internet (from 'questionable' sources). So you won't be playing GTA Online on it, but the Story Mode plays just fine. And despite all of the translation layers in place, the graphics of games sometimes having 2 translation layers (DirectX -> Vulkan -> Metal) and Rosetta for the CPU, GTA 5 still manages to run at 60fps, on an ultrabook. It's a testament to how good of a job Apple has done with Rosetta, and of course, the M1 itself.

I use it for writing my books that will never get published, hammering out code, running docker containers, and all the usual office needs (email, pdfs, MS Office, etc...). I also play games on it occasionally but the list of games that you can play on it is very small and rather disappointing, which is the only downside to this machine for me. That said, I do have my nintendo switch for all my "gaming on the go" purposes... Also worth noting that I have a linux workstation that I use for super heavy lifting (scientific computing, long compiles, etc..) and for the small amount of pc gaming I do occasionally. My wife is a pc user and flipped out a little bit over the fact that a base mac costs more than her top of the line windows machine but i think she's coming around after seeing how fast it really is.........and probably mostly bc it frees up the xbox since I can cloud game on it - which works really well for me. I don't even have fiber internet and I've had no issue running multiplayer online shooters. I know some machines can struggle with the connection but I guess I got lucky with that. I junked my Lenovo all in one I bought 5 years ago and replaced it with a late 2013 iMac 27 inch. It’s truly amazing how the reliability is so much better than a Windows PC. Same with the phones. Android maybe last 1 1/2 years. iPhone 7 Plus last 6 years. And it still works just fine. I just wanted to upgrade to 13 pro max.

I got the MacBook Pro M1 with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD. I think it was a good choice but I don't know how a MacBook Air M1 with 8 GB of RAM would perform in my daily use. But I hear the fan of the Pro very often, so I think it was a good choice.

the base model is (near) perfect - I do everything on it... it's my main work machine (office applications) sometimes - when I have everything open, lot of safari tabs, numerous long pdf's etc.. I feel some limitations from the 8gb of ram but nothing dramatic (and it's my only 'negative'). It outpaces my previous Macbook pro in all categories. Am also a huge fan and user of the seamless integration with my iPad. Storage - for me is not an issue, with the cloud and fast ssd's... My previous gold standard was the MacBook Air 2013 - battery was epic on that one, but it was underpowered (even editing a large word doc was sometimes difficult) so I had to upgrade to a MacBook Pro. With the M1, the Air has all the power I need, an excellent screen and a great battery...

I completely agree with what Dimitry has said. I got a 16gb/256gb MBPro (1500€). i have owned pretty good laptops and also custom built pcs, but the new MB is the computer that I love the most to use. MacOS is way better than Windows IMO, I also like Linux for programming purposes, but MacOS also is very good (terminal and good support) for that and easier overall. It performs great while being virtually silent, this doesn't affect the battery, which is amazing (I think it's the best in any laptopI). The peripherals are also good, the trackpad is unmatched, i never feel like I need to use an external mouse; the keyboard is pretty usable too. The screen doesn't disappoint as well, good resolution, brightness, the aspect ratio and apple's text scaling makes it feel bigger than it should since more stuff fits in the screen. Some things that I can understand that some people might not like is the only 2 usbc ports, which force you to use dongles and limits connectivity. Being able to connect only 1 display can also be a deal breaker. Idc about these things that much so not a problem for me. Build quality is solid af, feels very well built, although since it's aluminium u have to be careful with chipping it or small dents from bumping into things when carrying it around. It's not the thinnest or lightest but good enough. Along with the design which I like a lot. Overall, I think that the Air is a better buy since the performance is very similar, the TouchBar is not indispensable (it's usefull if u customize it with something like BetterTouchTools, but not in it's default state) and the screen despite being slightly worse on the Air is still very good.

I love how everything is so snappy on these machines, and also that you can run ios apps. But I think I'll wait for the 2022 model. Just switched to a heavy windows laptop (legion 7) for heavier work but I still have my macbook pro sitting around, not really using its capabilities, which I could sell for this. This would be the perfect portable private machine. I hope they use the same colors as on the imacs and ipads, that'd look beautiful!

I was interested in the Macbook Air M1 when it came out, but I still had my Macbook Pro 13" 2014 which I was able to put together by buying different used parts. But the screen started to mess up on it. I saw that the base model of the m1 was on sale for $799 at Micro Center. So I went and checked out some of these long term reviews like yours, and I decided to pick it up. I am loving it so far. The speakers are mind blowing for their small form factor, the keyboard is really good as well. The battery is great, and even with only 8GB of ram, things have been performing great, I am able to multi-task as much as one would need to on a device like this. I can even do some retro emulation and some newer games. I am getting some drop outs here and there with my wifi, but it might be the fault of my wifi more so than the laptop. Also I agree with you that 256GB isn't really enough, but the base model is the one that was the most discounted at Micro Center. For gaming and more intensive work, I have my recently built Windows PC. Ryzen 5600x, 16Gb of 3600mhz ram, and a 3060TI. I even will remote from my Macbook if I am at school or somewhere else, to my machine or PS4 at home to play some games. So for pretty much the same use case as you, surfing the web, basic productivity, watching videos, and even some light gaming, this device is a great deal.

I have the Intel Quad i-5, and I’d trade out happily for the M1 air…the Intel units get quite hot just doing standard workload, and around 5-6 hours into a work day, the battery is pretty low. I’ve noticed Microsoft Teams burns a lot of resources- so that may be the reason my battery doesn’t last
