Let's understand static stretches better, so we can nuance our thoughts about them and bring practicality to science: should runners stretch before a run, after a run, both or never? It depends and hopefully by the end of the video you'll know why and if you personally should.

This is a really interesting topic because it has been always one of my question mark why it should not be part of the warm up. I usually do dynamic stretching during warm up and static during cool down. Great explanation and clarification 👍

Great info. I think everyone is different and should do what feels good as you mentioned. This is often debated among top coaches on podcasts. I just start slow in all runs which warms me up. I don't stretch but found that burpees and cross-training is making me stronger and more flexible. I think there is a direct relationship between muscles as you mentioned. I have heard from experts that plantar facitis is often caused by another muscle not the one that is being stretched by towel or ball. In ultras often the muscle problems or cramps are caused by being low on salt or minerals.

I agree with you, burpees are great when you're fit enough to do them. And cross training is a must 👍👍👍. Thanks for your insight Richard, cramps are a different beast all together... As for plantar fasciitis, you're right, any part of the posterior chain could facilitate the injury: glute, hamstring, calves...

Boo stretching, lol. Joking aside, the only stretching I believe in is dynamic stretches, but after watching this I see your points about how static stretches can be helpful. Also, I didn't know about the nervous system and brain prohibitors. Fantastic video Steph.
