ASTRIDE: A horse game to look forward to

The only reason Star Stable gets away with what they do is that there is barely anywhere else to go. I still love SSO, but there isn't passion anymore, the rest of the team is smothered by marketing, and they don't realize that we can see through them. All of that will change with Astride, any maybe as SSO loses the millions they'll realize their mistake.

This. And with any other horse game to come that actually uses more time and effort to make the horsegames better. Industry has thought the bad quality "has been enough" or they are "just for young girls", even tho they never have. Astride is the first in line trying to answer to the need of multiple horsegamers of wide age range, who are ready to pay for a proper game if it's good. If the parents like it, they'll "sell" it to their children as well.

thats really not true sso is great and so is astride but they arnt the same at all sso has wayy better trails graphics and just I dont know something about it but its not realistic like astride but I still prefer sso because of its amazing graphics and fun festivities and lots of people will too the people who wanted a more realistic game will probably play astride or tales of rein ravine but sso is just as good as astride actually better but you cant really compare because they have completely different graphics and one is trying to be realistic one isnt

@@erinli3445 Everyone has their own favorites of course and Starshines, SS and perhaps even SSO (haven't played online but have seen clips and it's not much better than it originally used to be) works on some level. I do like the magic and the colorfull artsy style works for them, yet we have zero very or semi-realistic horse game that works. However these Astride graphics are early stage and still on development, so they will get even better than they already are. Besides, I meant the visual appearance more on the animation level. Have played too many horse games with bad horse's movement animations, but also yea pixelated graphics and too easy or simply short games. Hoping that will finally change so could play with horses elsewhere than in Sims3 Pets.

Ehhh not really. Star stable is more focused around magical adventures and this is more on the realism side. Honestly I only play star stable because there is no where else to go. I am an equestrian and sometimes instead of competing in virtual shows, I want to go on adventures, which is what I’m pretty sure only star stable offers at the moment.

I'm really happy that indie developers are fighting to take over the horse game niche. I just REALLY wish that they weren't all going for the generic "realistic" look. Frankly, it just doesn't look good unless you have tons of money to put into it like a major developer would. Leaning into something that was a bit more stylized would improve the graphics SO much IMO. Right now the people kind of lack character, and its stopping me from being that much more excited.

Although, I wish SSO would have taken the path that they established in their CD-ROM games - those had skill trees, horses with different skills, open world, a fun storyline with sidequests, and different races with different mechanics... I have the Summer one, and I'm pretty sure I have played it through 50 times over 10 years🤩

It was pretty simple, every level-up you got 5 points and you had 6 skills, like riding, jumping, disciplining, caring, and I can't remember the others 😅

What I also loved about these games is that your horse had energy which lowered when you were gallopping, and you could train your horse to be better at this with certain races. Every horse had different skillsets, some were fast but not very disciplined, or good jumpers, etc, and you could train their skills to their own maximum with specific races (show jumping - jumping skill)

This sounds so ambitious for such a small team and I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope they will deliver after these few years, though I'll keep my expectations low, as horse games don't have a good reputation for delivering anything more than walking-from-a-to-b gameplay. I follow the development in Discord and it looks great. I just hope it leads to something worth playing eventually. That new Horse Tales game was meant to be "the game to fill the good horse game void" and it's so far from it.

I’m pretty sure Horse riding club championships (the title is something similar) has skill trees (if I fully understood the concept) because when you level up, you can assign another point to each characteristic of the horse. This is such an amazing quality video, thanks for making it!

I have high hopes in this, but I have been in the video game community (?) long enough to know that a good and promising looking concept is not everything. I just want to mention Day of Dragons for anyone who may be familiar. They‘ve managed to steer back in the right direction but it was looking grim for a bit. Horse academy has something similar to a skilltree rhing where when you level it up, you get a point and you can place it in different categories that really affect the gameplay. It is a really fun game.

I love the 3 day events but I'll be happy with any disciplines that are present in the game. Hey Rattle, You mentioned in the video how the team won't be implementing the typical Arabians, Frisians and the like. And while yes, those won't be the CORE horse breeds, the team has informed me (as I contacted then through another Astride related video from another youtuber when I asked them) that they will add such horse breeds later on, probably as part of the DLCs. So technically speaking, they will add them, but only if you really want them and then, just get them through DLC. Because, I will admit this... I LOVE Arabians, and no horse game, to me, is complete without a beautiful Arabian. Also, I NEED my Spanish breed horses. my second favorite ever (NO, no specifics, just Spanish breeds, can be Lippies, Andys, even Paso Finos. It they're Spanish bred then I love them.) Other than that great video, great opinions and... I am SO eager for this game like you would not believe. Finally, I can have a "real" show jumper. Well... when I can get it of course. Love your video, and love how you make it entertaining yet well informed. ^^

I own horses in real life and I ride mostly western disciplines like cutting, cow work and ranching, though I do now a good amount of English riding disciplines and more. I’ve been playing star stable for so long and watching it grow and the animation get better and customizability for horses/tack get better is great but it definitely lacks realism when it comes to real horses. I am mostly excited for a game we’re I can be a guy!! I understand the meaning of starstable only being girls and that it is because games have a-lot of the time been made for dudes only and it also stops from thing getting weird/s*xual. But I can’t wait for the option of actually being my gender! And taking away the “horsegirl” stereotype that only girls like horse games! Over all this game looks like it will be great!

There are a lot of great ideas and i would be happy about a well done multyplayer horse game. But it is a lot of work for five persons, so I hope, they can realize it. I would be happy about playing with my friends without playing SSO. On the other side, there have been a lot games with high potential, that stopped in Early Access. - A lot of players only use a normal i3 or i5- PC. Should the game need more capacity, it maybe be a problem to reach enough customers.

I'm quite alright with only having multiplayer instances like this, i just really hope that when i want to race/compete I can do so with actual other players at the same time. I don't want just a scoreboard tbh If we're racing I want to race with actual players. If its dressage i want to be able to actually see other players' sets, and so on. I don't want my only interaction with competing to be a scoreboard is all i guess is all i'm trying to say lol So i do really hope they go through with making competitions online, or at least have the option to ^^

As a long time player of Star Stable, I'm really looking forward to Astride. There is just one point of concern... will Astride be able to run on cheaper computers? So many games now are aimed at people who have not only the money to purchase the game, but the money to purchase/own/run an expensive gaming laptop, or at least something upwards of $2000 AUD. I once downloaded a demo of an (unrelated) horse game and I was so disappointed that it was laggy and the controls were oversensitive. I couldn't do anything and haven't played the game since. Fingers crossed that Astride can work across all price brackets! 🤞

AMEN I’m someone who plays Horse Isle, and honestly their focus on adding ALL THE BREEDS TO EVER WALK THE EARTH drives me crazy, because they have spent more time making horses that almost no one buys, and less on all the elements that keep people playing. Like competitions, fixing existing animations, and idk actually implementing things that people are looking for. there’s not even a storyline to keep yourself occupied. Of the three games they have made, HI3 has the LEAST amount of function, and it’s no wonder people get bored so fast, unless you like breeding horses and competing for speed or endurance, there’s barely anything to enjoy. They built a massiv world and left it empty. So I agree that games shouldn’t focus on turning out breed after breed, but should make a functional list based on the majority votes for what should be added next WHEN they add breeds in, and it shouldn’t be top priority if I’m honest, because they literally haven’t even fixed half of the absurd

And actually about the “skill tree” I think you’d be surprised, Horse Isle actually does have something similar, you can train horses skill in Endurance, Strength, Agility, Speed, and Intelligence. The horses themselves are FANTASTIC but they are wasted on a lackluster world. Horse isle 3 breeding is VERY intricate, and conformation reports are a heavily implemented feature for people who breed from the ground up, or build their own custom breeds. It’s paid off that they have an actual horse geneticist on their team. They have Gait, but not much for them competing wise. They also have a lot of other features they’ve been adding in for game play, but as far as story goes it’s a piece of work. If you wanted to check it out just to review it, I recommend. It’s an MMORPG, and very interactive. I’ll cut them slack with the visuals as this is their first 3D game, but IMHO they could have done better if they hasn’t rushed the final release.

SSO...but better. xD A game that you might be interested in would be Horse Isle 3: Infinite Wilds It's a breeding game, the graphics of thee world and the player isn't anything special, but every horse is completely unique, with their own genes, and physical appearance varies. They have personalities, mutations, and some of the horses are absolutely gorgeous. It's completely free as well. You have the option to pay for benefits, but a player that doesn't want to pay for anything isn't restricted.

This game is an insta buy on release, lets be honest. I have never heard or seen a horse game with a plan to add harness racing or have it already implemented, which feels a little bit disrespectful to us who like to either watch or compete in harness racing.
