It's funny listening to the first question. I was raised CofE then a Jehovah's witness, one of my first 'doubts' was because they were so pedantic over taking the bible literally (6 days was *six days* etc) and teaching us it was of utmost importance to speak to/say gods Name. And yet they all admitted that 'Jehovah' was the best *guestimate* of the tetragrammaton YHWH, no-one really knows how to pronounce it but that's okay. THE most important thing was to say gods name and yet it's okay to guess it! Hmm. Then I started taking historical geography - let's talk about 6000yr old Earth and the flood shall we. 😉 Interesting video, thanks.

Its interesting to follow peoples different paths to doubt. My favourite counter apologetic is that nobody in their right mind can choose to believe something... anything. Whereas right in the heart of Christian doctrine, you are given the obvious expectation to treat your adopted belief as personal choice, and one that is predicated on the weight of eternal suffering or reward of eternal joy. Now I'm no psychologist or detective, but that's emotional blackmail and bribery to except what would nominally be a factual claim on an entirely emotional basis. I call it the 'moral imperative'. Didn't that ever give you pause to question your dogma/doctrine; the sheer fact that it was sold as a personal choice and that beliefs just don't work that way? To me nothing ever happens to be true just because you want it to, or that you're being threatened or bribed into believing it. How could such antics ever be convincing to a rational and reasoning mind? Yet that's the opening gambit of the Christian doctrine. Didn't that ever strike you as suspicious?
@kathryngeeslin9509
@kathryngeeslin9509 3 жыл бұрын
@@skepticusmaximus184 I love how you phrased this. While I cannot speak for anyone else, for me the "choice" aspect seemed perfectly "normal" to my child self, and only recognized as a problem well after I realized I was atheist. I had a very abusive mother who gaslighted a lot and a vivid imagination that was my primary escape; I could "believe" a better safer happier life, well aware of what I was doing and it worked. Considering how abusive some denominations can be (I know adults still terrified of demons and Hell) maybe some Christian children do something similar unaware and grow up feeling that's normal, never actually realizing (or even thinking about) what they actually *believe*. Like being indoctrinated to believe hateful abusive behavior is loving and vice versa. As you said, it's right in the heart of the teaching; indoctrinated early enough deeply enough one might never become aware of one's own emotions and knowledge. Of course, I'm not a professional either.
@skepticusmaximus184
@skepticusmaximus184 3 жыл бұрын
@@kathryngeeslin9509 Sorry to hear of your abusive background Kathryn. I don't think you particularly need to be a professional anything. The moral imperative seems to speak for itself. Interesting that you didn't recognise the bait and switch, until deconverted as an adult. I suspect many as children and adults alike, are ensnared in the delusion for want of basic reasoning skills. Well... 'want' isn’t quite the right word, since many avoid reasoning precisely for fear of its rational conclusions. The emotional motive can be seen overpowering the rational one. Glad you made it to the other side. 😉

@@raysalmon6566 "Places known only from scripture". I don't believe that's true. Ancient Greek historian Herodotus knew about Babylon and historians since, have believed it exists. What 19th century archaeologists did was find the actual location. You can write a work of fiction and mention real places. It's still fiction. Nineveh is another case: Modern Nineveh still exists, and the ancient city ruins are located right across the river Tigris. So it makes no sense to say we only know of it from scripture. The Western world has known about Nineveh from non biblical sources since the middle ages at the latest. I don't know what WFA is, but I'm quite skeptical of their assertions.

@@FakingANerve designing cardboard boxes is actually very technical and an important part of shipping and distribution. Do you use plain card or waffle core, what handling will be needed to plan for, can it be recycled, reused, glued or taped. It's not that straightforward. However it's still not biology so it's a category error comparing a cardboard box with an animal like a human.

Joshua mentions "this is gRape"... but... this is simple term. Our language doesn't have a word or even a descriptive phrase of this concept. What do we call: Serial killing a girls entire family, then forced sex, THEN forced marriage... ? What do we call this? This type of series of events, as practice makes the term "serial killer" a simple concept that we can then deal with..This isn't simply gRape, and it makes serial killing exponentially more diabolical. We in America don't have real examples or concepts to point to, to give this quality of mental ability a name. To imagine this scenario, is to put a human being into mental slavery/jail, and horror under constant cruelty for he resto of ones life. Now, think of this scenario when a beloved infant comes into the picture? This is such a brutal concept, I'm in tears as I write this. This concept is beyond the imagination of Christians who actually promote this, and agree with this, and think it's God's love... To use the word "barbaric", is just insulting to the Vikings and the Barbers. It's beyond inhumane, it is beyond human for sure. Gr8! Peace ☮💜Love

Am a modicum disappointed that I can not purchase Dr. Bowen's most recent production yet, so am instead purchasing Sumerian for beginners to share with my favorite family members. I found the link in the description. Btw, I have read my copy of Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism two and a half times now. The 1/2 is the parts I shared with others...who are now much more knowledgeable. *For some BS reason my phone is preventing me from continuing past the add to cart phase for my book purchase. Since I currently have no other option of my own, I will sponge a relative's computer tomorry. I really want this book. This is a bit of a hassle. Has this occurred to others? Perhaps less motivated individuals might be dissuaded and give up trying to purchase your book and thus reduce the apt rewards you have earned for your most impressive intellectual accomplishments. Daft, though I may be, I am really looking forward to your books. **Also, Aron, l want a signed copy of your book. I've been a fan for like half a decade and was a patron of yours for a couple years before I F'd up. I'm back on track now though. Can I buy an autographed from you? LMK. Thanks much!

Well the word Jew itself is clearly derived from YHWH. In modern Hebrew it's pronounced "Yehudi" but in Arabic it's "Yahudi" pronounced "Yahoodee". So "Yahoowah" could indeed be a valid pronunciation...

Hello Aron Never asked you a question before. Id like to hear your thoughts on why this belief in god and the subsequent beliefs that come with gods are almost impossible to separate from todays current political climate? Why does god come with a dose of telling other people how to live their life around you? Why is it a political hammer also?

I've seen Digital Hammurabi in passing but this has piqued my curiosity. Him and his wife have gained a new fan and this is a book I intend to read since I will have more time by giving up Facebook anyway, lol. The final straw by the way was being suspended for saying "Women were treated as property in all of the Abrahamic texts." Evidently, that is hate speech AND it was said on an atheist site. But I digress. Once again a damn good video, Aron. You were one of the first I came across as I came out of religion for the umpteenth time because I hadn't yet really considered the flaw in Pascal's wager. Thank you for all that you and Digital Hammurabi do. People like me need to hear the voice of reason regularly.

Now, I've read six books about Christianity, including the Bible, verse by verse and the book 'The Bible Unearthed'. Now looking forward to reading Josh's book!
