Reiner's family was shocked of Reiner's story because Reiner is basically saying that the people in the Paradis are not all evil but 'all sorts of people' or normal just like them and all he can think of 'evil' is sasha stealing a potato.

They most likely made Bertholdt, Reiner and Annie like side characters so people wouldn’t have thought anything of them for their big reveal, but Isayama did hinted a lot of stuff while treating them not so important, in comparison to, for example, the main trio.

In the manga of the dinner scene, Reiner was actually being a bit sarcastic and even chuckled remembering the time he had there. He was basically saying "Yeah, they're so evil that one of them didn't divide her potato into equal portions as promised" with a sarcastic tone.

Some people don't understand that Reiner is trying to convey that they're not bad people without saying it and I feel like that was probably better in the manga. I thought it was obvious, but with the amount of people that don't get it, it wasn't done well enough.

The manga interpret it way more clearer, since it include a specific person that Reiner was talking about. Also esp that panel of Levi and Mikasa appearing. Zeke explained it well more in the manga and I wished they did include him saying that the soldiers in Paradis are actually strong (which the scouts).

@@boggless2771 I think people aren't getting the sharp contrast between his very grave, deadpan delivery and the very... nonsensical, almost lighthearted accusations here. A lot of the confusion is probably from focusing too much on reading the subtitles and just taking the text literally at face value and not on listening to the way he delivers it. It gives the whole speech a very satirical tone because he's talking about it like he witnessed war crimes, but the subject matter is silly campground stuff.

The armbands are pretty simple. The light brown ones means you're an eldian civilian. White/Grey an eldian soldier. Red a Warrior (Titan shifter) or a relative to one. Yellow means a warrior in training

Rewatch the scenes with Grishs, he clearly has a brown armband. It's even more clear at the scene where the Eldians soldir return to Liberio, cause you can see both armbands togheter in a lot of short scenes, where it's clear that the soldiers have the grey ones, while the normal civilians waiting for them have the brown ones

Reiner was telling his story to his relatives as if he is telling a story about funny and crazy shenanigans you and your friends did in a college dorm and just having fun. But he can't obviously tell them that the people on the island are just normal people since it's a crime if you do. An example of this is what he did to Falco. He basically told him that he can't be saying that kind of stuff around random people since he'll get reported.

Yes, I judged that the mother's horrified reaction was on account to that. If anybody walking down the street were to have heard any of what Reiner had said, the whole family could suffered the consequences. Plus Gabi is young and impressionable and it could make her question her resolve as well. But it shows how split Reiner is, because in spite of trying to come up with something really negative to say about the people on the island, he isn't able to.

One of the best things Isayama did was write from our "Enemy's" POV. And now we sympathize with what they have gone through and it comes down to the viewer hoping that no one dies though all are on opposing sides. Very clever way of writing.

Yes! And it's crazy how the panel goes and how everything they said before make sense. I really did liked the fact that S1 is way too different from S4, which just means that the show is way deeper than people fighting "titans". It tackles about reality in life. The characters is S-tier too, to the point everyone is important and cannot be removed.

At the dinner table they talk about Gabi inheriting the Armored Titan in such a casual manner that you forget she literally has to eat him alive. They are so proud and brainwashed that they enjoy the idea of Gabi eating her cousin the same way we have seen the people of Paradis being eaten alive in the previous seasons.

It’s important to note that Eldians in Marley ‘don’t have privacy’. From that conversation Zeke & Colt had with Magath (the Marleyan soldier), to the last scene where the Marleyans were listening in on the Eldians conversation. These scenes show that the Eldians can never speak what they truly feel bcs most of the time Marleyans will be listening in. Anything they say that hint at the slightest bit of disapproval/opposing the Marleyan government will get them in trouble. Remember back in Grisha’s memories when young Grisha was speaking his mind abt how he thinks his sister was killed by Marleyan public security and his dad said ‘Be quiet, the walls here are thin’, implying that Marleyans can be listening in? Thats why Reiner had to phrase things differently, and is also the reason why its hard to understand Reiners intentions if u take what he says at face value. 😅

Reiner's monologue was more to point out that all of his stories about those "over there" are just normal human characteristics. The Liberio Eldians and Marleyans believe that the island folks are devils. Reiner's stories show that they're just people, both good and bad, hence Gabi's reaction to his stories.

shogeki by yuko ando (aot s4 outro) is one of my favorite songs ever... the entire song is spectacular. regarding reiner, yeah it seemed ominous but the words he was saying -- even gabi picked it up. reiner called the paradis people "people." you see, in marley, whether they're eldians or marleyans, the paradis people are called spawn of the devil (not even considered human). he was like "yeah they're evil cos there's this girl who was eating potatos..." basically that's such a weak argument if you're determined and truly believe the paradis people are evil and are convincing others...

Rainer saying those things about Sasha and the "bad" details about the people in Paradis was to show how in reality the enemies aren't devils, they've always been normal people that were just born on the other side of the conflict. The absurdity of what Rainer says by calling them "devils", but talking about normal behaviour made her mother react like that cause in the end they all know that on the other side there are people like them, but they can't accept it cause to be able to go on with the war they need to convince themselves they are doing the right thing. Gabi on the other hand for the first time questions if they are all bad people or if, as Rainer said, there are all kinds of people just like everywhere else

I know you are still getting used to this new part of the story and characters, but they are so important! Like you said, it's a build up. I love how we get to see more of Reiner as well. His character is so complex and there is so much development. That table scene is meaningful because it shows that Reiner was casually talking about Paradis people, not as devils - as he first stated - but just normal people of all kind of backgrounds. I really can't wait for the next episodes reactions; it's so hard to wait a couple days!

Austin, your conflicted feelings are totally understandable. I experienced something similar reading the manga, but ultimately this story remains the best I've ever consumed. I think our shock (and maybe even disappointment), the uncomfortable feeling of the earth shifting under our feet at the tonal switch, is an echo of what our folks on Paradis must have felt upon their discovery. This is when the story gets really interesting on a meta level. Seeing people's reactions with every chapter release of the manga and now watching people's reactions to the anime has been fascinating to me! It's been sort of a case study in people's vastly different capacities for accepting and working with ambiguity and questioning their natural in-group/out-group mentality.
