I never had that “maybe I’m an alien” feeling. When I was growing up, I secretly thought I was a mutant and I just kept waiting for my powers to develop. If they ever did, my mutant powers are over analyzing, being anxious all the time, being weird of slightly inappropriate in most social settings, and the general inability to remember someone’s name that they just told

I think it's important that we don't 'eat our own' in the autism community. I appreciate your thoughts on Paige and your charitable response. The culture has grown so critical that it takes a lot of courage to put oneself out there to help others. It needs to be okay for someone to create content even if it doesn't suit everyone. If it's not your thing - move along and find someone else. I've seen a lot of division over issues like the symbol (puzzle piece vs infinity sign) and the name (Aspergers vs autism) and it should be okay for people to have different opinions and be in different places in their thoughts without people saying their view istheonly correct one.

My phone can definitly be very regulating, quickly de-escalating meltdowns as long as whatever is triggering the meltdown has subsided (eg. someone shouting, flashing lights etc, phone won't really help if this is still happening) And if my phone isn't working and I am at home, snuggling in bed in a dark room with a cartoon/animated movie on. I used to feel like an alien or different species compared to everyone else, or maybe that I was from a different time period somewhere further in the future because I just didn't understand why people did or said certain things. I also have no idea how I managed to get through the interviews I did, I had to prepare for hours just to think about physically being able to speak, and thinking about what possible questions they might ask, I guess my mask is at the point where I might aswell apply for acting roles..... (of course the interview mask is probably the most exhausting of all the masks so after an interview I can't function to do anything else anymore after that!)

You have cool teeth. I’m 48 female and literally just starting the process of getting evaluated for possibly being on the spectrum. My story is long and I’m saddened to have gone my whole life feeling so strange and odd yet my intelligence level is high so people in general didn’t know what to make of me. Connecting the dots is a bit traumatizing and so many painful past situations are lighting up in my brain and my entire life’s narrative is being viewed through a different lenses. And yet here I am staring at your teeth, realizing I do this so much. I get distracted by something and then have to go back and re listen to what was being said. Wondering if that’s a trait of being on the spectrum.🤔

Thank you for this video! I am not an autistic person but I really appreciate your point of view. Something that really resonated with me, was your experience with job interviews, being a recruiter, I see people ALL the time who I know would be great for the position, and certain things in the HM interview rubbed the hiring manager the wrong way. I am someone who (with ADHD) sometimes thinks logically and tends to be overtly honest or literal with responses, interviews for a lot of us (with Autism, ADHD or Neuro-typical) have a hard time with interviews. About the job interviews, or interviews in general, I usually role-play with my mom or my dad. My mom has been in leadership positions and she has hired people in the past, but she’s terrible at role-playing. My dad on the other hand is really good at asking the correct questions and sounding interested when I talk about music theory. I suppose you no longer live with your parents, because you’re much older than me, but you could talk to someone you know and pretend you're in a job interview. I know role-playing can be very hard for some autistic people, but for me it’s a lot easier than real life.

Hi Andy, I agree about how challenging finding a job as an autistic person is. I'm 19 and I've been trying to get a job for months now, but had no success. My special interest is languages so I've found a way to get some money by teaching privately English and German but not anything more than 3 students at the moment. I'd like to get a job at a company where I can make just enough money to not need my parents to buy me clothes, but it's been hard. I have a question: do you disclose autism in your resume? I particularly do but I'm starting to think that is why I haven't even been called for an interview yet.
@IndieAndy
@IndieAndy 3 жыл бұрын
Aww right well disclosing autism on a resume is of course a personal choice. I personally never did this as I feel it's better to explain it in person but also as well people that read this on a resume may out their own feelings about autism to the forefront and dismiss you. While they absolutely should not do this, it is something you could change on your resume and change it to disclosing in person.

I loved what you said about job interviews. It makes a lot of sense that those questions could be difficult for autistic people, who tend to be very literal and have a hard time thinking in analogies, metaphors, and abstracts. So for an autistic person, the question, "What animal are you?" could be very difficult. Gives me something to think about when it comes to accommodation in the workplace. Maybe a different format for interviews would be better suited for neurodivergent individuals, such as a demonstration of skills or verbalizing problem solving given a hypothetical situation. @@IndieAndy It's considered CLICKBAIT and like Ashley it made it seem like you were going to expose her or something. Having actually watched most of the video I'll bring your attention to the part about being painfully honest @7:59 and then for all intents and purposes you LIE(half truths, in this case like a 1/5 of a truth). Which then people start doubting your authenticity maybe even your actual autism. I don't think it was done with malice and certainly we let other youtubers get away with it. It's hard to explain why we let them but they'll give us a wink wink: "This is clickbait guys" or "I know this a little clickbaity" then offer the explanation. Where it's dicey(dangerous/not smart) for smaller channels if this video is the first interaction a viewer has with you, and not many people follow the adage to not judge a book by its cover you've lost the viewer. Not a big deal and take this for constructive criticism that its meant to be.

@@llehsaderob @rewar Firstly I haven't not lied here as I do go into my thoughts of Paige as the title and thumbnail suggest. Yes it's not what the rest of the video is about but frankly guys I shouldn't have to explain myself like I have. Other KZbinrs do this stuff all the time. Is it clickbait? At this point I would say yeah but I can't see what's bad about this honestly as the whole point of it is the draw people into the video which is what clickbait actually means. As I have said I'll take under advisement however I will do what I think is best for my channel. If that means doing more clicky titles then I will do this and I'll leave judgement to the audience whether they want to continue following or not like it should be.

I think the negativity came from the Mark Rober event recently, ‘cause the counter charity event was cancelled because the ASAN has been found to have harmed BIPOC people. Basically, Paige failed to react properly to the information and wanted to go ahead with the livestream, and later people didn’t see her first apology as sufficient. I’m white so it’s not my place to say whether her actions were wrong, but I do think she’s been responding and learning from the incident.

It’s hard for me to watch your videos because you have crap together that I’ve never been able to get together. I know it’s different for everyone. I’ve just always thought “why can’t I do xyz??” And then I’m like. Oh. Andy does it. You have a job, you apparently don’t hate it and work full time, yet still have energy for a band and special interests, fiancée (been there but didn’t work out). Happy for you tho of course! And I’ll be watching anyway! Can relate with you a ton. I have a hard time finding dudes I can relate with.

How old were you when you became aware that you’re autistic? I have 2 autistic boys, my 8 year old is non verbal with complex needs and my 6 year old is verbal, attends mainstream school and doesn’t see himself as autistic because he’s not like his brother. He also knows that I’m autistic but he doesn’t feel like my experience is anything like his. Is age 6 too young to embrace a diagnosis?
@IndieAndy
@IndieAndy 3 жыл бұрын
I was told about my diagnosis when I was 10 from my mum. I think that while 6 may seems young, maybe slowly introducing it to them is more helpful than not saying anything. Because it gives them the opportunity to know why they are the way they are but also the get support with that. Hope that helps.

I like Paige and think what she is doing is great, but she does seem to have a pretty negative way of talking about neurotypicals. Plus most of her content is completely stolen from Chloé Hayden who has been doing KZbin for 6 years
@pepsyboo
@pepsyboo 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think Paige steals from Chloe Hayden, I think a lot of what paige talks about is just stuff that a lot of people in the community talk about. I’ve seen Chloe do the same. A lot of our talking points are bounced around a lot

@@pepsyboo I just wanted to say I second this. I follow both Paige and Chloe they're great. I don't think having similar content/topics is bad because as they both emphasise autistic people are different from each other so their own opinions, struggles etc will be different therefore sharing the same thing but from different people can be a really good way to show how different we are from each other.
@IndieAndy
@IndieAndy 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have to say that alot of us autistic creators do alot of cross over from time to time and some might think we steal each others ideas. But there is only so many things you can do with the topic before people start to talk about the same thing. Personally, I think it's about who is delivering the content. While I do like both Paige and Chloe, I kind of feel their ideals are very similar and their points of view are similar too. Maybe that's where some of these feelings come from.

But what I will say though is that we should all try to work together. At the moment, I'm not feeling that sense of community between creators but I would like for this to change and I guess by sharing how I feel I hope it encourages others to think before passing judgement you know.

Hmm I couldn't really say anything about the anti-medicalist comment but she did push for the alternative charity event in direct opposition to the Mark Rober one. I did get some of her motives but I definitely felt there are ways of doing it that are more civil.
