You are making a mistake with your magnesium supplement just like millions of people but you just don't realize it. Stop making the same mistake as it is killing your brain slowly.
Magnesium is good for sleep but magnesium supplements can also wreck your sleep quality. And regular poor sleep quality can lead to gradual loss of cognitive function in your brain. Don't risk neurodegenerative disease in later life.
Fix this mistake now. The good news is the mistake is easy to fix. Just as this magnesium supplement mistake is easy to make, so is it easy to fix. So if you are using this magnesium supplement for sleep enhancement, then avoid this mistake and do what I suggest in this video. Watch video to find out when is the best time to take your magnesium to get good quality sleep. The quality of your sleep is important not just quantity only.

I am 87 years old and I take Magnesium Glycinate with a meal at dinner [7.00PM]. Though I am a light sleeper which the elderly faces, I do not agree that taking Magnesium in the morning is better and effective for sleep at night, because our bodies and absorption are not the same. You were talking about Mg for sleep. We should underline that there are other, maybe even more crucial benefits from it. I encountered one of these when in early 50s I started to be exhausted/winded quickly and particularly dizzy when getting up from crouched position while working. My GP referred me to cardiologist and all tests were done, EKG, Echo Cardiogram, Stress Test,... all well. However, Cardiologist suggested something I never heard of before: try taking 500mg Mg (plain Mg mineral) in the morning. Indeed, cardio-symptoms went away quite quickly, within weeks. Back to normal capability, no dizziness on quick getting up and such. Minerals do many things in our bodies...

Thank you Dr. Joe for bringing this important subject. The reason of taking magnesium during day or night is the accumulation of magnesium in the body. A high-saturated fat diet reduces magnesium absorption in the intestines. High sugar intake increases excretion of magnesium by the kidneys. Phosphates found in carbonated beverages such as dark-colored sodas bind magnesium, making it unusable by the body. All causes magnesium to stay in the body for anywhere between 12 to 48 hours which is the major difference in different people. The best is to start from very low dose, to continue for some time and then gradually increase. Another concern about magnesium is on how the body manage the time. High does of magnesium causes the time goes faster than it is.

i have found, and it has been suggested by many, that consuming food / snacks / supplements within 2-3 hours of going to bed, may affect sleep quality. in my experience with my sleep tracker, if i eat a meal within 2 hours or less of going to sleep, it will delay the onset of deep sleep for some time. and so i will end up getting less deep sleep, and less restorative sleep. this also shows in a higher resting HR while asleep, and a lower HRV. this is irrespective of what is consumed being magnesium or not. so it would make sense that it's probably not a great idea to take a lot of supplements right before bed imo.. i find magnesium malate to work best for my purposes, but it tends to be very energizing rather than sleep promoting. i take it with my meals earlier in the day and with dinner, but my last dose of magnesium is usually over 8 hours apart from when i go to sleep.

Dr. Joe, which form of magnesium do you use/recommend? I wasn’t sure so I started using whole food plant magnesium 250mg, which instructs to take twice a day; ideally with food. TBH, I don’t know if I “feel better” taking this form per se. But it is kinda hard to get both doses in before noon. Thanks

I am not a doctor or scientist, but I have read that 'whole food' is more of a marketing term. The manufacturer may start with a pulverized food base (10% I think by law) although have the same synthetically produced, standardized USP vitamins or minerals as the supplements not marketed as 'whole food'. Same with 'natural'.

If you have a sleep monitoring device and it tells you your Deep Sleep is good, then fine, carry on. Good sleep is not only about hours slept but the quality too especially Stage 4 Sleep. If it isn't great, it then doesn't matter whether you slept for 9 hours, that's not restorative sleep

Essentially my observation is that taking it at night interferes with Deep Sleep as evidenced by Sleep monitor devices. That's as good as my observation gets. As to exactly why it does that isn't very clear but I suspect at the initial stage the mode is excitatory at first before becoming more relaxed later on

Thank you for this excellent video Dr! Just discovered and subscribed to your channel. I'm currently reviewing my evening intake of magnesium. Taken in the evening I've found that it doesn't help promote sleep so this is very interesting. My magnesium supplement contains, amongst others, 280mg of magnesium tauriate. I also separately take taurine and find that, unless I take the taurine in the morning, I cannot sleep at night. Taurine, for me, significantly negatively impacts sleep. So, my current line of investigation is to start taking the magnesium in the morning. After watching this, however, I'll need to change forms of magnesium to accurately assess whether it is the (Mg) taurate or the time. Brilliant info, thank you!

You try it. You won't be foggy during the day. The brain fog comes from the effect on your Deep Sleep when taken at night. Poor deep sleep equates to poor sleep quality even if you get enough hours. Good sleep is about quality and quantity. Not quantity only

Took a week of high dosages . Be aware you will detox and you need some calcium .vitime d , boron snd other trace minerals to work . There more to suppliments then just taking them . Also b 6 as P -5-p is important .it works all together with all b vitimins and protein . Thankyou for the vidio .

I think the mode of action is that at night digestion is slower, so when you wake up the magnesium is still being pumped into your bloodstream. So you wake up still sedated and muscle relaxed, but you need to be alert and have things to do. I tried them in the morning I like the magnesium L threonate better in the morning. Glycinate at night, but you have convinced me to take them after dinner instead of right before laying down.
