A good bandsaw is a worthy investment, I was pleased when you were able to replace your old one! After building several guitar bodies in the school shop back in the 80s, my next build was years later in Covid season, and I had the same jigsaw as you. The results pushed me to buy the next big tool- a spindle (bobbin) sander. It’s worth using basic tools to learn woodworking skills, and to appreciate the time saving big tools when you can afford them!

Great video !! I built my 1st guitar back in 1961 with very few tools: An Eclipse Fret Saw, a 1/2" Footprint chisel and a Woolworths wheelbrace and a few drill bits. It took me about 2 hours to cut round my 'Stratish' body with the fretsaw which I clamped to the corner of my Mums dining table. I then cleaned it up with a spokeshave which I borrowed from my Uncle. I even cut my fret slots with that fretsaw and only had a tiny intonation issue on the 'B' string at the 19th fret. I was only eleven so I didn't beat myself up too much. Keep up the good work, looking forward to the next video.

Don’t want to sound like Monty pythons 4 Yorkshiremen sketch but I did my first build with hand tools only on a black and decker workmate outside in the garden. My wife was photographing me through the window with three fleeces and a woolly hat on and thought I was mad. I now have a nice little workshop but that first guitar is still my favourite of all the ones I’ve built. However, I won’t be doing another build recreating those conditions. Keep up the good work, really enjoy your videos.

My first electric guitar was my sister. I had to string her up with wire and plug her into to the radiogram.

Oh la di dah, a black and decker workmate? I had to balance my build on the dog and rout the cavities with my teeth!

This is an excellent project. Well done Pat. I hardly ever watch luthiers who have amazing workshops. As Ali G would say, Keep it Real.

I still don't have a band saw. My approach is to use a drill press and drill holes all around the perimeter (away from the line) and then use the jig saw to "connect the dots". It is much easier, and the holes act as guides to keep things square. The bad part is that there is a lot of cleanup. That probably doesn't matter if the cleanup is done with a template and router.

I've just finished my third guitar using a circular saw and hand saws to rough cut the shape then a router to trim it down. Tried to use my crappy jigsaw on a big hunk of ash but my teeth were rattling too much by the time I had cut an inch or so. Horrible job, hope to have a bandsaw for the next one! Had an oscillating spindle sander for the latest one which made it a lot better. Love the channel!

Would it be feasible to just use the template and a router to rout the body out, just taking small passes like a cnc does, and skip the jigsaw?

TOO much like work with that jig saw. At least you got to work it down with a router. I was thinking you might have to file or sixty grit it into submission. I far as I know Gio is still using a jig saw on his guitars.
