this is a little dramatic guys. I'm a foreigner and the first time I tried Durian, I found the smell a bit strong but also musky sweet. In the west - and especially in the UK - we have a lot of things that smell and sometimes taste a lot worse that people eat every day. An old goat cheese with honey is very comparable - it's pungent, spicy, creamy and sweet at the same time. Which is exactly what Durian is. It's vanilla, custard, cream, tropical fruit and spicy onion juice together with a smell that indeed is something to get used to. However nowhere is it called 'disgusting' or 'garbage fruit', maybe among some backpackers who only eat mcdonalds and takeaway stuff. If this video was about Noni, it would have been realistic. Alas, it's about one of the most sought after fruits in all of S-E asia, including China. Make this video again, grow up and then try Noni fruit. Then you'll go back to Durian and understand why you were just being dramatic :)

Durian have many varieties, which is why some taste great while others taste somewhat foul to most, just like cheese. And just like cheese, each varieties have their own fans. The cheese analogy even extend to its smell in that it smell bad to those who are unfamiliar with it but once you like durian, it somehow smell like the best thing in the world. Not sure about surstromming though, lol.

Helps to think of Durians as wine. A tasting of various kinds reveals subtle changes in taste and texture. There are differences between durians grown in different areas let alone countries. And then there are the different types themselves. It's best done in a small group to maximise variety Perhaps next time try it with an experienced local and learn why many are passionate about the fruit. BTW many experts advise not to drink alcohol while consuming durians due to the risk of the combination giving an adverse reaction. Enjoy and great video

It's amazing how lovely the people are; so polite, patient, and friendly, even with a major language barrier. As for durian, if you have a preconceived notion of it tasting horrible, you won't enjoy it. It's a delicacy all over S.E. Asia and it IS delicious. Try it in shakes, mochi, pastries, and even plain. Savor the taste and texture, NOT the smell.

You didn't try Mangosteen (the purple round one, with white flesh inside) which is seriously delicious. Sort of tastes like the best aspects of orange and banana combined. Not sure if he's just putting it on for the camera, or whether he genuinely finds it not to be bland enough for his British palate. It surprises me that he then likes the custard apple, which I find to be similar in texture to durian. Try some mangosteen if you haven't already Ben.

Thanks for showing Ho Chi Minh to Market. Is that Ben Thanh market? I've been there in 1997 & 2004, how time flies it's now 25 & 18 years later! And how the topography of the city has changed. I no longer recognized the simple landmarks before! Covered by new buildings and establishments. The cashews and nuts I bought there were big and so delicious! Durian is not that bad just don't smell it so much. The texture is a combination of boiled sweet potato and chesa (the dark orange-yellow fruit with a pointed bottom). The small red with skin horns like the bigger dragon fruit is called RAMBUTAN. Lychee has smooth, light shade of yellow skin color. The many seeds Custard Apple or Sweetsop is called locally ATIS in the Philippines.

Mr. Backpacker Ben, though the ladies from the market were quite welcoming and peeled fruits for you, for 70.000 VND in Vietnam you can normally buy 2Kg of fruit not only one piece of fruit! 😂 Though Durian is everywhere expensive, they also make ice cream with it and biscuits. There is a place in my hometown (small town full of Amish people in Northern Indiana in the US) that makes Pho, and they have smoothies and Durian is on the list of available smoothies. Its not always in stock, but when it is, I ALWAYS get a Durian smoothie. It is good as a smoothie, and I am sure the coldness of it takes a lot away from the smell. Something that tastes like crap would be more palatable if it werent served warm and steamy, or room temperature, is my thought process. The coldness at least creates a little bit of mental separation. Of course, I dont think it tastes like crap, that is just the reaction most people have. Maybe that is why my experience is different with it.

I love pickles, and years ago I went along the buffet picking up sandwiches, pork pies, sausages, crisp ETC. Then I saw the BIG PICKLES in a dish and so I stuck four on my plate and went and sat down. Then I realized what Lychees are, as they are more like a sweet syrupy taste. (I thought they were pickles in vinegar so put some juice on my plate). So all my other stuff on the plate were covered in Lychee juice. Hi Ben, That was priceless to see that show was unreal. Bald is the man like most things that smell bad but taste good and you guys aren't eating bugs scorpions, or crickets.

I absolutely love durian ! When I smell it, I have to have it! And I'm from the United states. Is actually very expensive.

The Saigon traffic doesn't look as mental as the traffic in Hanoi back in 2014. Back then the percentage of bikes and scooters to cars was immense

Once you get around the smell, it's actually quite delicious. If you can't get around the smell, there are plenty of durian flavored ice creams and candy that will let you get a taste of it.

The Grab trip costs 42k, he paid 100k. The fruits price cost 290k, he gave the lady 500k. Hi Ben, next time you visit Vietnam, I would love to be your personal ‘trực ban’ tour guide 😂

If you are a traveller and want to keep it budget tight, do not go to this market 😂 it is often more exspensive cus it is famous and there are a lot of foreigners here! Try to look for a more local one (the one where few people know english 😂)

The trick to Durian is freezing it. Freezing durian will get rid of the smell and turn it's texture to a sort of slush. That's the proper way to eat it. Eating it raw is sort of like a "challenge", just for fun.

hahaha I love durian. Either you love it or you hate it and nothing in between.. My sister hates so much (the only one in the family) and she would ran into her room and lock herself shut in

My local fruit shop had Vietnamese durian recently. The cheapest durian I've ever seen, and they warned me not to expect too much. It wasn't the best I've tried, but it was delicious nevertheless. Many people have to try durian a few times before they develop an addiction.
