this is a little dramatic guys. I'm a foreigner and the first time I tried Durian, I found the smell a bit strong but also musky sweet. In the west - and especially in the UK - we have a lot of things that smell and sometimes taste a lot worse that people eat every day. An old goat cheese with honey is very comparable - it's pungent, spicy, creamy and sweet at the same time. Which is exactly what Durian is. It's vanilla, custard, cream, tropical fruit and spicy onion juice together with a smell that indeed is something to get used to. However nowhere is it called 'disgusting' or 'garbage fruit', maybe among some backpackers who only eat mcdonalds and takeaway stuff. If this video was about Noni, it would have been realistic. Alas, it's about one of the most sought after fruits in all of S-E asia, including China. Make this video again, grow up and then try Noni fruit. Then you'll go back to Durian and understand why you were just being dramatic :)

Durian have many varieties, which is why some taste great while others taste somewhat foul to most, just like cheese. And just like cheese, each varieties have their own fans. Helps to think of Durians as wine. A tasting of various kinds reveals subtle changes in taste and texture. There are differences between durians grown in different areas let alone countries. And then there are the different types themselves. It's best done in a small group to maximise variety Perhaps next time try it with an experienced local and learn why many are passionate about the fruit. BTW many experts advise not to drink alcohol while consuming durians due to the risk of the combination giving an adverse reaction. Enjoy and great video

As for durian, if you have a preconceived notion of it tasting horrible, you won't enjoy it. It's a delicacy all over S.E. Asia and it IS delicious. Try it in shakes, mochi, pastries, and even plain. Savor the taste and texture, NOT the smell.

You didn't try Mangosteen (the purple round one, with white flesh inside) which is seriously delicious. Sort of tastes like the best aspects of orange and banana combined. I no longer recognized the simple landmarks before! Covered by new buildings and establishments. The cashews and nuts I bought there were big and so delicious! Durian is not that bad just don't smell it so much. The texture is a combination of boiled sweet potato and chesa (the dark orange-yellow fruit with a pointed bottom). The small red with skin horns like the bigger dragon fruit is called RAMBUTAN. Lychee has smooth, light shade of yellow skin color. The many seeds Custard Apple or Sweetsop is called locally ATIS in the Philippines.

There is a place in my hometown (small town full of Amish people in Northern Indiana in the US) that makes Pho, and they have smoothies and Durian is on the list of available smoothies. Its not always in stock, but when it is, I ALWAYS get a Durian smoothie. It is good as a smoothie, and I am sure the coldness of it takes a lot away from the smell. Something that tastes like crap would be more palatable if it werent served warm and steamy, or room temperature, is my thought process. The coldness at least creates a little bit of mental separation. Of course, I dont think it tastes like crap, that is just the reaction most people have. Maybe that is why my experience is different with it.
