Luke I also truck camp now because I’ve gone through chemo for a year and a total life changer. Anyways I’ve always had stihl chainsaws. I’m 70 and appreciate good equipment. I have a battery powered 12 inch sthil. Mine came with two batteries. A battery will last the weekend for firewood. It fairly quiet. It is a little more money but totally worth it. I’ve had others but they don’t compare at all. Nobody fixes them or fresh batteries are hard to find. I even dropped it in a lake on a canoe trip in 8 feet of water. It still works great. Love all your videos. I’m not able to get out now because of the cancer but I am planning to get out on a trip in September. Thanx man. Greetings from Ontario Canada

Hey Luke great vid! I have the same dometic cfx28 runs off a jackery 500. I've had both about six months so far. Jackery is awesome for all kinds of things. I've run the fridge for 68 hrs straight from 100% to zero. Mine draws 4 watts just setting 44watts when compressor kicks on. Noticed when the sun shines on it, causes the compressor to kick on more often which makes sense, but draws more power. Took off the handles then wrapped reflectix and replaced the handles. Cut out areas on the reflectix for the compressor vents. And fashioned a lid from reflectix as well fits like a lid on a shoe box, an inexpensive solution compared to the price for a cover on dometics website. significantly reduced the sun impacted power draw, when left in the vehicle or on the tailgate, every little bit helps. I initially set the temp at 37 but noticed it can drop as low as 32 which is too cold and a waste of power. I help the power/compressor use by having items frozen (meat, water bottles, etc) for longer trips/outings, drops to temp faster with less draw on power. 39 seems to be the sweet spot will get up to 41-43 before compressor kicks in. Looking forward to your review on it. Reflectix is great on your vehicles windows when car camping too, cut to fit and friction forming to the inside of the windows.

Some people have medical reasons that hurt them from wearing them. My mother has congestive heart failure with fluid on her lungs among other things. I have a Black+Decker 40 volt bat chainsaw. The bats are interchangeable with my weed whacker, hedge trimmer, and yes, even a 16 inch lawn mower. The saw worked well for cutting down branches of a tree I had taken down, but not cleaned up and hauled away. Mine is a 12 inch bar, and did quick work of cutting 5 and 6 inch branches of the dead tree. I used it on about a 4 inch live elm, and in no time dulled the chain. So, there are limits to what it will do, but I think in your case, overlanding, it would be quite the addition. Suggest 2 batteries just in case. The slow charger takes quite a while and is what comes with the saw. I got a quick charger included with the lawn mower, and it will charge a bat in about an hour or just under. I like your vids. You are obviously having fun, and enjoy what you do. Thanks for your efforts. I realize there is a LOT involved in the post-production, and it is appreciated. Keep breathin', man.

I got that fridge last summer for my cross country trek after the previous summer of using a cooler and replacing ice every 2 days. Got really old, not to mention traveling alone and hard to stay situationally aware at stops when filling a cooler! Don't miss that messy ice! Keep it plugged in my car's outlet up front with a while towel over the top. I crossed a lot of wide open 100+degree desert/prairie. I use a Kodiak by Inergy for all my camp power needs and overnite for the fridge. But many times, the fridge never cut on after dark in a cool spot. The towel or even a fleece really helped retain cold. It was highly recommended by many van campers!

Looks like a great time out. A DIY self hack for the screen on the back of the truck ( or windows ) is to measure and cut the screen to shape a few inches larger than needed. Then hot glue some magnets at the corners and any other desired support points. Then all you need to do is place the magnets on the metal body of the truck (or window frame ) . For areas where there may not be any metal such as a fiberglass camper shell you can 3M sticky tape some round metal discs (small from Home Depot, Hobby Lobby, Michaels) at the needed points. It works pretty well. Thanks for another great video. We don’t get Yuengling in Arizona but I have had it many times (Wife is from Ohio). Love it.

If you're wise then fools and the wise can think you're wise. However, a wise person can't think a fool is wise by these rules. But fools can think whatever they want. So, what if a fool thinks someone wise is a fool? Then they make statements like that. Across the board, country by country, enemies and allies, the statistics are real. Battery chainsaw is the go, lots of very hard wood here in Australia. I’ve got the Stihl MSA 220 with 2 batteries and the middle or the range charger. I went with a 14” bar so I could use a thicker duty chain 3/8th”. It is a fair investment yes, but you get what you pay for. One battery will cut as much wood as a full petrol tank load on a fuel driven machine. Easily enough for a night camping. I tend to go for longer periods, hence the second battery. If you were wanting a more integrated system check out Milwaukee, they have a chainsaw and the fan will blow a dog off it’s chain, good for hot nights. Obviously Milwaukee has many handy tools for use when overlanding. One integrated battery system has its advantages, however, the Stihl chainsaw is really impressive. Hope this helps, kind regards, Luke

Hey Luke correct me if I'm wrong but I believe remember you already have the dewalt batteries and a charging station from your previous videos so my suggestion would be to stick with the one brand so that you can utilise the batteries you already have to extend your run time if they're compatible. Other than that all I can recommend is to look for a brushless motor, the higher amp hour of the battery the long run time, as well as the higher the volts, the more powerful it will be, and your needs there will vary on what you're cutting, finally a reputable brand focused on warranties and customer service. Should be able to find it for a bit over $200 USD since they sell for about $300 CAD here for the smaller ones depending on the brand. Can't wait to see what you decide on!
@bertsanford91564 жыл бұрын
Hey Luke, Sthil battery powered chainsaws start about $299 with battery and charger. If you already have batteries and charger from other Stihl products they start around $240 , and yes they go upwards of about $800 if you want to go crazy with it .

Last year I bought a 14” Ryobi battery powered chain saw. Nowadays, I find myself reaching for that one over a gas saw for quick jobs around the place. I think for firewood work on a overland trip, it would be perfect. Just don’t forget, you need the same safety gear for an electric chain saw as a gas one. Ear and eye protection, as well as good chaps.

I know I’m late on this one, but after a very recent deep dive researching all the available models...the Dewalt model currently for sale at HD came out on top for me. I needed a top handle light weight version as an alternative to my Stihl. I’ve cut about a qtr. cord of 2-6 inch wood and am impressed. It may use the same battery as your compressor. Good luck. Great videos.

I believe it was stated it could make 100 cuts on a single charge but that would depend upon cutting softwood or hardwoods. I love mine and it is always in my truck when camping. I paid something like $299.00 for it with a 12" bar and I believe at the time I was told it also came with a 10" bar also.

Long time viewer, love your improvements Luke. I have two battery powered saws, Greenworks and Ryobi. Both work great, 24 volts I think, and for limbing quietly, I prefer them over my gas powered saws. Next time I camp in the PNF, that is what I am taking.
