BRILLIANT! I have seen some BAD ways to do this job. So easy WHEN YOU KNOW!

Great video, thank you so much. Just got one of these motors. Trying to figure out how to pull it apart. Now I know. Great info. Love the motor.

I wish I had seen this 25 years ago. I ruined a flywheel trying to remove it on my own. I now own 6 Seagulls of various models. I have not tried to remove a flywheel from any of them. I WILL BE DOING THEM after seeing these videos. Thanks for sharing the knowledge with clear instructions and nothing left out.

+ken george thanks ken . Flywheels can be sticky sometimes . I've done a lot of flywheels now only the very corroded or neglected seagulls stubborn . Plenty penetrating oil for a day or so you should be good. Lump hammer only for the top but , normal hammer won't shock it enough . If after the first or second heavy blow it still hasn't moved more oil , but be careful many heavy blows will eventually bend the crank. Thanks for your comment Barry

Good if you haven't got a pulley remover....a cheap tool but avoids hammering

Brilliant, many thanks this will help me not damage mine when I take my flywheel off to check the reason why there is no spark.

+Somerset Roach thanks for commenting .hopefully this will help . Plenty penetrating oil a few days before and you should be set . I hoping to do a spark diagnostic video on the wipac soon too. Thanks again Barry

Cheers Barry, I picked up my working seagull a week ago but when I got it back home I failed to get it to start. Initially it had a rather poor spark and now no spark at all. Have checked the usual suspects (HT lead, plug and contacts) but to no avail. So have now removed the flywheel and about to delve deeper. I may need to wait until I see your Wipac video before I get it sorted. Thanks Chris

How do I get the big nut holding the flywheel off to start the process ? It's seized on, presumably with salt and crud etc and if I apply heat I'll cook the Wipac coil inside
@barjhealy4 жыл бұрын
Soak with wd 40 over night . Get someone to hold flywheel and loosen it or impact driver

Have you any tips on how to get the flywheel nut off, Try as I may I can't remove it, have it soaking in WD 40 at the moment. If I can get that off, then I'll be able to get the fly wheel off. I Hope. Great Video. Hope I'm not years too late.

Many years agoI had some bad trouble with the ignition of a Seagull. It was a 3 HP model probably with the (then) modern black plastic pulley and the oval fuel tank. Following the instructions in the Seagull manual, which are the same depicted in this movie, we tried to take the flywheel off. Even after soaking it in penetrating oil for 2 days the flywheel wouldn't budge. In the end, we hung it by the flywheel and and 'expert' would give it a 'few nice blows' ... and in the proces missed the nut and broke the flywheel... . Pretty much of a disaster, for a 16-year old schoolboy with a dishwashing job on Saturday nights, until someone remembered there were some old cannibalised Seagulls lying around in a corner of a shed at the yacht club. We found an ancient 5 HP, missing the gearbox, fuel tank and carburettor, but still having the original aluminium pulley and ignition. I have no idea how old it was, but the flywheel was aluminium and the whole ignition system appeared to have been made of bronze parts. Luckily this pulley, baseplate and complete ignition system came off without a hitch and after cleaning the insides with some petrol, we put it on my 3HP. Funny enough it all fitted and it started after the first pull. The only (slight) issue was that since the shaft got bent a bit in our efforts to the get the flywheel, off the engine was vibrating a bit more. On the other hand, as a Seagull owner you're used to a bit of shaking ... . It served me perfectly and was still running perfectly when I sold it with my sailing dinghy about 6 years later.

Hi, really helpful video. I have managed to get my flywheel off now and have to change the coil. How do I get the back plate off so I can get to the screws that hole the ears to the coil? There is a screw under the back plate that seems to go towards the spindle, does that need removing first or does the back plate just prise off? Thanks. Andy UK
@barjhealy5 жыл бұрын
Remove the screw . Can be hard to come off . Usually a but of heat helps. Villiers or wipac coil?
@AndyUK-Corrival5 жыл бұрын
Coastal Works ok brill' yes it is very tight, shame no hex head! It is Villiers and I have a new coil already. Got one screw out that holds the ears but the thread that has a nut on to hold wire that holds HT lead doesn’t want to budge so hoping if I get the other screw out then the coil and ears will come off.... thanks for the help. A

Oh any idea what the thread is for the nut holding the flywheel on? On another Seagull lightweight I have the nut is very stiff so wondering if someone has hit it and damaged the thread. A
@barjhealy5 жыл бұрын
@@AndyUK-Corrival a whitworth thread no doubt . Yes it's probably got a blow at some stage or someone put the drill chuck directly onto the thread to spin it up
@AndyUK-Corrival5 жыл бұрын
Coastal Works Moving on from my previous questions. I got the screw out that holds the top plate and soaked area with paraffin and penetrating fluid for a week or so. Applied some heat but still plate not moving. I wound piston to lowest point, screwed but onto thread of shaft and got a mate to suspend motor by holding plate and I hit the nut sharply with lump hammer. Very little movement and now the piston seems to be stiff. Have I buggered something up, bent the con rod or something? Really frustrating. On another engine I still cannot get flywheel off, about to give up... thanks.
