In this first part of Bead Rolling Kick Plates you will see the processes for completing a set of sill plates using the bead roller. Some of the things you will see are the use of skate board wheels, flat washers as top dies, and how useful it is to have an adjustable top shaft and a quick clamp for increasing the usability of the bead rolling machine.
In Bead Rolling Kick Plates #2 you will see how to make a top die from scratch. I will be using the lathe to true a piece of ½ inch plate, reduce it's width by 1/16 inch, and see the use of a radios turning attachment I have made for my lathe. There will also be a little TIG welding. I will also be showing the use of skate board wheels as bottom dies on your beading machine.

I’ve always enjoyed your videos and have learned a lot. I recently (like 5 minutes ago) learned about your history with Shelby American. Very cool!

Hi RD. Yes. I worked and drove for Shelby from 1963 - 1966. I also worked for STP on their Indy. Car team from 1968 - 1969. Lots of time working on really fast cars. Thanks for your comment. Jere

Thanks William: I will continue to show how I make the tooling I use to make different parts. I think showing how the tooling is made will let you guys know that you don't have to be stuck using only the tools available to you from a store. Jere

That body style is some of Henry's best work. I put a 56 Chrome Grill in mine. Kept the straight axle using a CPP Disk Brake Conversion and the CPP Toyota Power Steering swap... It works great. BTW I have an original Steering Wheel & horn button w/setup in perfect shape for the 53.

Jere, in all your great videos you go to all the trouble of putting in a inset closeup view. The scaling of the screen makes the detail shot only about 10% bigger! Why not try putting the closeup during the operation in the main frame and save the huge shop-wide panoramas for the inset. (for mr. tired old eyes).

Hi Flyboy, This was one of my first videos made 4 years ago. At that time I barely knew how to use a camera let alone how to use an editing program. If you look at my moor recent videos you will see that I have gotten better at doing what you suggest. I just recently upgraded my editing software and now have to learn moor stuff. I like being in the shop making stuff, not so much computer stuff. I really like this sort of input. It's what will make the videos I make better for all. Especially for us old guys. Jere

U are the man with the ideas question I have is when your making your dies what do u do as to sanding them and polishing, I made the washer dies and also the dies that came with my woodward kit are very sharp and leaving Mark's any info would be great ty

Hello Smoke: When I grind my tool bits for the lathe I hone them by hand afterwards to insure their sharpness. I also make the last pass to finished size very slowly so the finished part is left smooth. A little brown scotchbrite finishes the job. Some of the dies that come with your bead roller are case hardened. So to insure their machinability I anneal them first. You can use a file on the sharp edges of your dies to brake the edges enough to not leave the marks you mentioned. Thanks for watching. Jere

Hello Highlighted: Only if this were a production item. Notice that I had several practice pieces. After one shape was developed I moved to the next shape. Every radios required a certain amount of material length and therefore had to be exact since I was working to an already established total width of material. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for the question and for watching. Jere

@@jerekirkpatrick2092 so , in words , you could only get that shape from pressing with dies and not rolling ? thanks for the time to reply to my first question , your a good man , cheers

@@upyours1256 Hi The material I was using was 5052-H32 so had to be worked slowly to avoid cracking. If 1100 or 3003 were used there would be no concern about how it was worked. When you say rolling, I understand that to mean using a folding type brake not a press brake. Thanks for the question. Jere
