Most musicians play their own conception of Beethoven the man - tempestuous or brooding, witty or impenetrable. Backhaus plays Beethoven’s music. And I, for one, hear so much more.

Please pardon my ignorance, but how is this not his own conception/interpetation? If all the great musciains are playing their own conceptions of how Beethoven sounds, and since there are also no original recordings of Beethoven playing them, then who has the right to say that their playing is the true conception that Beethoven intended over any other musicain's conception/interpetation?

My mother was a classical pianist , and she loved Beethoven’s piano sonatas - her favourite recordings were those by the 2 Wilhelms( Backhaus & Kempf ) , and Artur Schnabel . Hearing these sonatas again , brought back wondrous memories of these piano sonatas , the phenomenal historic recordings by Backhaus, Kempf and Schnabel ( my mother had a roomful of records ) , and my mother playing these sonatas … thank you so much for your KZbin posting , greatly appreciated .

Many thanks Classical Music for this monumental collection of the 32 Beethoven sonatas played by the unforgettable Wilhelm Backhaus. He was one of the gigantic members of the German school of piano interpreters, who delighted in playing Beethoven. It is very fortunate that we have thanks to youtube access to several integral sets of this marvelous and sometimes revolutionary music. Backhaus was a exceptionally gifted musician, his rendering of the sonatas is respectful, emotional, beauteous, warm. A real privilege.

Have always felt, when listening to Backhaus play Beethoven, that, in essence, I was listening to Beethoven, himself, at the keyboard. Backhaus, "rough and ready," as always, moves and astounds me. His manner of eschewing repeats, too, I find refreshing. Backhaus is direct, sometimes brusque, but not unfeeling. There is heart. There is soul. There is.... Beethoven.

Backhaus is among my personal favorites in this repertoire. Even late in life, as with these recordings, his style was straightforward and full bodied, yet always within bounds, giving a serenity to the music that few have equalled

Look, you really should set brains to “think” mode, and try to remember (or understand) that these older pianists-and all concert instrumentalists and singers-only lived on LPs back then for the majority of the public who lived outside of large cities or countries where the concert artists rarely, if ever, played. So, unless they listened to radio stations specializing in classical music, many people never even _heard_ of European artists (in the US, especially), and even American artists who didn’t blow the world up the way Van Cliburn did! People really had to know to seek them out in record stores and on radio. There are exceptions, of course. I am a classically trained mezzo, flutist, and organist who graduated in 1985, and there have been literally hordes of musicians outside of my disciplines from recorded history through the 80s I’d never heard of until I got access to the internet and KZbin got started! So, *you can’t expect these great artists from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and even the 60s and 70s to be household names NOW, because they weren’t THEN!* Also, classical music may be a big deal to us, but it isn’t to millions and millions of people these days who are really not interested in much but social media….in other words, we are in a small niche. So stop bemoaning the situation, and try to understand it instead! It’s much healthier from a psychological standpoint.

"Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don't feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day!"💕🙏💗💕

That’s a really good description I have a recording of his last concert I’m not at home I’m trying to remember what’s on episodes Beethoven oh Schubert everything he plays on that con in that concert and he’s quite old and he also died I don’t know a few weeks later or even a week later everything on that concert is wonderful that you could have a quibble with his Mozart a little bit one part of it but yeah I really like his playing that exactly that what do you call rough and readyIt’s what my Indian music teacher would call no gimmicks nothing inflated the emotion comes through the music rather than you know I don’t know excessive rubato Or something

Thank you very much. This is great "Classic Beethoven" as I remember from the 1960's. At that time there were indeed many critics who considered the Backhaus Beethoven Sonatas as a definitive version. And indeed as mentioned elsewhere in these comments, there are certain reviewers who over the have negatively impacted the public perception of Backhaus. I personally love the Barenboim interpretations but for me the Backhaus interpretations are just as great. There is no such thing as "The Best">

@@danielandforok Some people have noticed that modern tempos of Beethoven sonatas are incredibly fast ALTHOUGH nobody plays them in marked tempo. Why Beethoven would have marked tempos that are simply impossible to play especially on period instruments? That and many many other facts have led them to say that tempo marks are meant to READ in different way. Comment section is too limited place to tell the whole story so I give you the names who tell you more: Bernhard Ruchti, Wim Winters and Wolfgang Weller. Hope you honestly start thinking that more

For me no better complete set of Beethoven's sonatas exists than this set of Backhaus. While other great pianists tends to let one focus not just on the music, but also on their playing, Backhaus makes you forget about who is is playing and just focus on Beethoven's brilliant sonatas. For the same reason I also prefer Backhaus' recordings of the Beethoven concertos with Schmidt-Isserstedt over any other recording.

There's sometimes an impatient quality in WB's playing that, in the end, he convinces me is in the music itself. It's not a "let's get this over with" feeling. It's a propulsiveness, a leaning into phrases, that gives the music great vitality.
