That EXO clip haunts me. I legit do not understand how in 2020 they're acting like they've never heard of black face before and don't "realize" they're appropriating cultures they don't respect enough to research? There isn't a place on this earth that hasn't heard the N word is wrong. No one wants to listen to these "ignorance" excuses anymore. And these stylists need to be educated too because YG has a history of music videos appropriating cultures with Native American Headdresses, Black hairstyles, religious objects used inappropriately. The more kpop expands globally the more all eyes are on them expecting actual apologies and effort. Its exhausting trying to say I love kpop while also watching other white people defend this nonsense constantly

When it comes to their artists getting into trouble with some sort of cultural appropriation and international fans are mad they become quiet asf. I also feel like some fans take it too far bc when the apologizenct hashtag on Twitter became a thing and ppl were speaking out on there, Mark(nct) had this one Vlive and people were giving him death threats(he was reading comments and ppl were also saying apologizenct also so it’s obvious that he saw it). on behalf of korean kpop fans and koreans in general, i am so sorry. i have studied for quite a while now about other cultures and their histories, and i understand how certain aspects of culture are incredibly important to certain ethnicities, regions, religions, etc. that’s why i am so careful in what i do and say when i do certain things pertaining to a certain culture. for example, when i learned english, i made sure i understood its origins and how it was able to spread the way it did. i wanted to understand it before i learned it. even though i learned the united kingdom’s version of english, i still went as far as to learn the history of america since i wanted to understand certain american terms/words. that’s when i learned english slurs and i have never felt worse about learning the origins of the n word. i remember feeling so disgusted when i learned its meaning, yet a lot of koreans still don’t know what it means because they never teach us in school about this sort of thing. we never learned about american culture or events that can be considered “insignificant” to our country. that’s why koreans may never truly understand other cultures of people we never really understand unless it’s implemented into our education system. that’s also probably why korean fans can get so defensive over their favourite groups: they don’t understand what the certain cultural aspects mean to certain people so, when people get upset, they take it as hatred when in reality, people just want an apology so they can forgive the celebrity and help them learn and grow. we’re ignorant in a lot of things, and, in korea, it so happen to be the place where we lack knowledge in is other cultures. i know how bad it can hurt when someone takes your culture and uses it as their own without even knowing where it came from. you don’t understand how many times i’ve cried seeing others appropriate our culture. that’s why i feel for you and other black kpop fans. i know what it feels like to have your culture ripped away from you and being used as mockery, fashion, etc. it hurts, especially when you look up to some of these idols. for the emotional pain some of my fellow koreans have caused you and others, i am sorry. i really want my country to learn why we shouldn’t do certain things or wear something that doesn’t belong to us without understanding it first. it’s going to take a long time before korean understands these things, but we just have to work on it together at an international level. we need to see eye to eye and try to understand each other before making any progress. i want my country to see how by doing certain things relating to culture can severely affect others. i just wanted to let you know that i really do hope you know that you’re loved. i know it hurts so much when people just take your culture and mock it or use it as their own, but you and others have got to stay strong and teach people why doing these things is wrong. if you get hate comments in this video, ignore them. don’t even reply. let them sit there and be lost in time. to anyone else who reads this: i dont care if you’re black, white, hispanic, or whatever you may be, you’re beautiful and no one has the right to mock your culture and make you feel awful. i am so sorry that my country does the things it does; we’re ignorant when it comes to others’ culture. i’ve been going on for a while so i will stop here. have a wonderful new year :)

👏🏾👏🏾We as black people are the blueprint of many things in different culture. 95% of Kpop is based on black music and culture but we're mocked and hated. The biggest problem is our culture and things that we cherish, they dont respect us but if a black artist rocked something of Korean culture and heritage it would be horrible (and wrong). For me, the labels behind them dont care how they disrespect black people and most of these "artist" have zero voice (which still has me confused on how so many follow their every word). Now some idols are trying to be better and appeal to all cultures respectfully and it shows, and then there is the ones who as you see will on peak in their own country.

Well said!! I knew most of these already but some of them like the artist getting paid a measly 60 was shocking. But yes if they could recognize the meaning and cultural appropriation that would speak volumes. Maybe the stylists should be held accountable as well or whoever makes that decision. SM needs to wake up fr. Same with Blackpink and any other time an idol wore locs. (For the most part) I don’t know if they have much of a choice as it’s more of the company’s power. In the case of (G) I-DLE, a Korean fan (who is friends with Shuhua's sister, one of the group members); the family of the members found out about the incident, in fact they all did, and from that event all the members were better educated. Many people complained to them for not apologizing (and they are right), but the girl who spoke to Shuhua's sister said that they couldn't do anything; since CUBE ((G) I-DLE's company) prohibited them from saying anything about the matter and the company could even sue them if they said something, or even give them a kind of "punishment". After that incident, the members and especially Soyeon; They looked very sad and sorry in the programs that appeared, their only way of indirectly apologizing was saying; "Thank you for supporting us, I will work hard to be a better person", as they could not apologize because of their company. I'm not trying to excuse myself, but I just wanted you to know the truth about the other side of the coin. ♡♡♡

I understand that learning is a process and true change happens over time. However, Jhope’s cornrows controversy happened just last year. Obviously, whatever happened to Namjoon all those years ago still hasn’t taught them (the group) and their company the lesson. Meaning, BTS is still making mistakes. With the biggest fandom out there, of course they should be called out when they make those mistakes. ARMY shouldn’t get upset that they’re being called out especially when those people calling those Kpop celebs out aren’t invoking hate, just pointing out why such things are wrong and pleading for change (from both artists and their fandoms). I love BTS and truly believe they, for the most part, care about people. It’s just that, we all have to stop thinking something is cool or funny when it is actually hurtful and triggering. We all need to go past prejudice and stereotypes and double-standards. With idols having a lot of influence, we should expect more responsibility and accountability. That’s just that.

i understand where you’re coming from but in like lisa’s or hongjoong’s case i don’t think it’s them. they most likely didn’t choose to wear them, it’s probably someone in the styling team. i don’t see it as their fault for now as we don’t know who chose their hairstyle and as most companies don’t let idols dress themselves for the most part i think it’s most likely the stylist.

Other point, there's many groups that wore braids but littles ones or in a very small quantity. What happens with them? Like in TikTok many people use this type of braids but I never see them with reclaims and then J-Hope in chicken noodle soup yes and idk
@monie94634 жыл бұрын
Jhope didn’t wear braids it was gel twist and most people didn’t find it offensive since it was just twist hair with gel and i dont think the size of the braids make a difference

@@monie9463 I'm from Argentina, but my father and his family is from Perú (Both countries are in Latinoamerica). There, my family taught me to use braids because of the Andino culture (You can search it) and all my life I used it. I don't know if this can offend black people because our braids are 2 larges and all this time I thought the size or quantity make a difference. The second point is about women who use it for their products (crafts) and sell it, in a historical way the colonizers braided the hair for many punishment so... What do you think about.

Straight hair is not tied to a culture.... Black hairstyles are so ofc it wouldnt be offensive for black people to wear “white” people hair. Also can you not invalidate other black people for being upset about idols doing Culture appropriation. It’s insensitive and tone deaf. Thanks.

Before Africa was colonized, or even put on the map, Africans used their hair to show status and which tribe they were from by adding beads, and other artistic accessories. When they were sold as slaves, they had their heads shaved and stripped them of their identities, homes & families. Then further down the line in history (after slavery ended and white people didn't own black people anymore), black people were forced to have "white hair" bc natural hair was seen as "untidy" and "ugly" and they wouldn't be given any opportunities if they didn't conform to white standards (which they struggled to have at all). I don't think the actual act of doing braids and such is the harmful part. It's the monopolisation of black hairstyles and not knowing the struggles black people had to go through to be able to let their hair out naturally and to express themselves with their hair. I mean, the first black hair care product was only around in 1905 and even then it wasn't sold on shelves at stores. Besides, most black hairstyles damage non-black hair so why are they trying something that isn't made for them? We have been fortunate enough to have hairstyles for our hair throughout history.

You don’t have to apologize but basically like I explained in the video black people were stripped of everything due to slavery including their real culture. We had to create a whole new culture and by wearing these hairstyles it is like stealing out culture and taking things from us again.
