Fiers did not intentionally hit either one of them, most especially Stanton. You can tell he was too shook up by it, he was having a hard time even looking at him lying there. He probably should have been replaced before Johnson came up. He did not have control of his pitches most of the night. I do not think he actually hit Johnson. I think it hit off the knob of the bat, not his hand, certainly not his right hand. His left hand was towards the incoming ball, his right was still tucked towards him. I think he played that up a little hoping to get Fiers ejected. Instead McGehee goes balistic and gets himself and his coach ejected and both benches get warned.

It was because, on two straight pitches that HIT the batter[s], the umpire said they attempted to swing at the ball, which is utter BS in and of itself. First one hit Giancarlo Stanton squarely in the jaw and took him out for the rest of the season [you're not trying to swing at a pitch coming at your face], and the next one hit Johnson, who was then pinch hitting for Stanton, in the hand, near his head. Again, you're not trying to swing in that case. McGehee was absolutely justified in his anger, especially considering the team had just lost their best player for the remainder of the season with a gruesome injury.

Ok, so here is what happened. While dodging the ball, the bat crossed the plate which is a swing. It is ruled just like if you were to dodge the ball and leave the bat up there and the ball goes off the bat, but in that case it would be considered a foul ball. In this instance, because the hands are not part of the bat, the swing counts as a strike. It is not where the bat was when he was hit, but where the bat ends its motion. The announcers are Marlins announcers, but it is very clear that they have no clue what the rule is and really shouldn't make themselves look any more stupid by dragging it out.

Here is what I saw, coming from a Marlins fan, and someone who has nothing against the Brewers. First thing's first, Fiars did not intentionally hit Johnson or Stanton, you clearly see in his facial expressions that it actually made him very emotional when Stanton got hit. Second, Casey mcGehee's reaction was very uncalled for, it was just feeding the flames to an already bad situation. Last, to the Marlin's announcers, I'm sorry but Reed Johnson did indeed swing. The anger is understandable, but his bat did break the plain. The Marlins have a right to be angry about being pegged up and in twice, but they blew it out of proportion.
@sammorganstern797110 жыл бұрын
I cannot agree with the marlins more than just know. They have all rights to be angry at Fiers, he hit their best player, then in the same at bat (apparently Stanton swung which is bull) he then hits Johnson who came in for Stanton. Marlins and the commentator have my respect
@justinkoeberl57974 жыл бұрын
What is bull about it? Both players swung and were correctly ruled as strikes. These announcers have no idea what they are talking about
@ernestbywater4119 жыл бұрын
OK, I don't play baseball and I'm not familiar with all the rules. However, playing the pitch in slow motion certain aspects are clear: 1. Just before the release by the pitcher the batter's body is towards 1st base, his hands are behind his head, the bat is angled up and back over his shoulder, and he has a light squat to his stance. 2. When the ball arrives at the batter's box the pitch is over the plate. The ball is level with the bottom of the 'Cellular' sign behind them. The batter is now body towards the pitcher with both legs stretched out, one forward and one backward; thus he's now squatting lower. The bat has dropped down to be angled down across the plate. Batter's hand are over the edge of the plate and swinging forward with the bat in his hands. 3. Ball hits his hand on the bat over the plate and just below level with his shoulders. Both hands and bat continue to swing forward and he continues to pivot to his left while dropping his body lower. Now, it looks like, to me, the ball was in the strike zone and the batter brought the bat through about 100 degrees of arc while changing it's angle of attack by about 30 degrees before the ball hits his hand holding the bat. Does this constitute a swing at the ball or not, or does it constitute a ball in the strike zone - either is a strike call, is it not? I don't know which it should be called, but it was over the edge of the plate and in the strike zone. The commentators clearly don't like the play, that's for sure.
@crwilso69 жыл бұрын

You're right. In most cases if a pitcher hits a batter and it looked intentional the dugouts are both given warnings, but in this case you have to look at the pitch count. Its a 0-2 count so for the pitcher to intentionally hit a batter at this stage doesn't make much sense.

AeroForceOne In some leagues that's a rule, where if you get hit on the hand it's considered a foul ball because your hands are technically considered part of the bat. Happened to me when I was 13. Actually got hit on the hands so hard it ripped off some skin from my fingers, but the ump called it a foul ball with the same explanation. It's not a rule in the majors though.

There are a few comments about that not being a strikeout. Unfortunately it is. The rule on a ball that hits you, is that if you swing through it, it counts the same as a check swing strike. The hand is not part of the bat, so it is not a foul ball. It doesn't matter that the ball hit him before the bat crosses the plate. This is the correct call.
@almostfm6 жыл бұрын
No, it really isn't the correct call. It wasn't a swing because the batter made no attempt to "strike the ball". Go frame by frame and look at the position of his left arm relative to his chest-it stays in basically the same position until after the ball hits his hand. Simply turning your body like that is not an attempt to strike the ball.
@acenewmangaming67386 жыл бұрын
It doesn't state he has to make an attempt to strike the ball, just the bat crosses the zone, which it did. He started his swing, and moving his head made him finish the process and swing through the zone. It is a terrible play, but the correct call.
@almostfm6 жыл бұрын
" just the bat crosses the zone, which it did" OK, here are the official MLB rules: mlb.mlb.com/documents/0/8/0/268272080/2018_Official_Baseball_Rules.pdf Please find the rule that says if the bat crosses the zone, it's a strike. I'll wait.

To be fair somewhat to the announcers, it did look like the ball hit the batter in the hands before the swing. That being said, they do sound like homers. I'm not sure on the ruling though, I know if the bat goes around (aka swings, whether your trying to or not) while you're getting out of the way, it's a strike. I remember going to a game a few years back, and in between one of the inning, they showed an example on the video board of someone moving out of the way of an errant pitch, and the batter had held on to the bat, and while he wasn't trying to, he was just trying to get out of the way, he went around with the bat, so it ended up being a strike cause he technically swung at it. Not sure about the rule if you're hit before or during the swing, and it looked like he got hit before the swing

This is one of those insane machismo things in baseball that is so stupid. It's not an intentional HBP unless Fiers was a great actor. Neither is the next one. Yet everyone gets upset but no one can really articulate what is the issue. It's like getting mad at your next door neighbor because his dog got out and bit your kid. You get mad at the neighbor but really the dog was at fault or maybe you should just blame the situation. The neighbor obviously didn't release the dog, it was an accident but you still feel like you should blame them. The truth was that the Marlins players and color commentator just focused their anger on Fiers, even though he hadn't meant to do anything to them.

There are a lot of biased home network announcers but the Marlins have the worst and the most biased announcers of any MLB team. If you want the most unbiased announcers of a home network (that means not Fox Sports, Fox Sports 1, or ESPN) then you should listen to the New York Mets announcers on SNY. They have no problem calling it like it is. I don't mean they complain about the Mets like some of the fans do. They will actually give credit to the opposing team if that is where the credit is due.

How would you react if you just saw a buddy get hit with a fastball in the face and his face was shattered to pieces and then another buddy right after almost gets hit in the face by the same exact pitch and same pitcher? Maybe you would let 2 of your buddies get hit in the face by baseballs, and one of your buddies have to get facial surgery, not us, we stick up for our players.

It is one thing to be upset that a teammate is hurt. It is another to try to start a fight over an obvious non-intentional pitched ball. If they wanted to be pissed at someone, be pissed at Milwaukee's manager for not taking Fiers out of the game. Fiers was wild and rattled after hitting Stanton. He had no business throwing another pitch after that one.
@shwangie10 жыл бұрын
I don't think anyone's disputing Fiers lack of control this game, but Johnson definitely swung at the pitch. If you're going to dodge a pitch turn the other way. When you turn your body the way Johnson did the barrel of the bat go with it, which resulted in the swing. The call is correct.
