It's no 2020 and I am still impressed with my TX-RZ810. I have zero complaints. I use it for 2 channel stereo music mostly. Anything I input sounds fantastic. The internal DAC is very impressive too. One of the best purchases I have made in a long while. Every time I get a bug to see if I can improve upon it, I can't find the rationale to spend the money.

Pure audio mode, disables tone controls, shuts off display output through the HDMI. The idea is to turn the unit into as close to a "straight wire with gain" as possible, not increase power output. Hence the name Pure Audio. Denon has a similar mode with theirs. It's called Pure Direct.
@Frietpan
@Frietpan 6 жыл бұрын
i wonder if thd actually goes down in pure direct,straight,pure w/e mode, or otherwise does the display and other hardware add distortion. or is it all a gimmick.
@brentb5303
@brentb5303 6 жыл бұрын
I would venture a guess and say that it does make measurable differences in the signal path. What that translates to in regards to the final output audibly to the human ear is questionable. If adding such a feature makes consumers pick one device over another. Then why not, I guess? So gimmick, most likely. I have a pre amp from Yamaha, the c-70 circa 1982. It has an option called direct disc. When pushed in it bypasses the parametric eq and a couple of other stops along the signal path for the phono input. If the parametric eq is set flat I can't tell the difference. It does add an additional button and light, so there's that.

Also had the Soundstream Reference 1000 on my custom kick panels loaded with Image Dynamics components that were tuned via the Image Dynamics 31 band EQ set. I've got the 810 in my living room and an 820 in the theater room. The 3rd zone of both feed to each other. Zone 2 of the living room 810 goes to the kitchen and dining room and Zone 2 of the theater room goes to some outdoor speakers. It's great...I can have music playing throughout the entire house and outside with a few quick clicks on the Onkyo app. Excellent receivers for the price except I had some issues with the 820 and 4k60 video. I'm not sure what the difference is between the 810 and 820 but yeah, the 810 is much happier with 60fps 4k.

I bought the TX-RZ820 from Crutchfield based on this video. I have Magnepan's entry level speakers with the quasi-ribbon tweeters and a rated 4 ohm impedance. Blew up the receiver, then another. Crutchfield replaced both under warranty. I opted for a dedicated 300 wpc amplifier from Emotiva and I'm glad I did. The receiver is great for signal processing and ergonomics, but it's still a fairly weak chip amp in the power section. Does ok with dummy loads and constant impedance but not great with difficult to drive speakers.

I've got it paired with a iNuke 6000 for the lows, thanks to your review on it BigD!! :P The HDMI passthrough has pretty much zero latency so it works perfectly as my gaming/music/movie setup My first ever amp before the RZ610 was also an Onkyo that I bought over a decade ago when Circuit City was liquidating their stores and was daily driven, and it's STILL kickin, now it's in my bathroom serving music duty while I shower lol. Can you plese test the rca voltage output on fl/fr rca out on your Onkyo receiver with a 0db 1k hz test tone? There is a lot of debate about Onkyo when using external amplifiers since the're only rated at 1v output and most outboard amps have an input sensitivity of 1.4 or 1.6v. Denon, for example, is rated at 1.2v out to match amps nicely and get full rated power.

You can tell when Onkyo really cut costs on their receivers with the mid range products. 30lbs is light for a 7 channel receiver. The old SR805 (2007-ish) did 200+ at 8 ohms and and 370 watts at 4 ohms, all channels driven. This receiver is still really good, it just isn't the steal of a deal the older series receivers were for their time. I'd still pick it over pretty much anything else in it's price range.
@jmiller007
@jmiller007 6 жыл бұрын
OxBlitzkriegxO you're not wrong. Never before or since have you been able to buy a brand new thx ultra 2 certified amp for the rrp of the 805. It was so ahead of everything else that onkyo cannibalized the 806 by using their mid range chassis which was shared by the 706. This is in contrast with the 805 that shared the shame chassis as the 875 and 905. They also weigh closer to 51lbs!

The 2092 was their flagship other than the v1 and weighed in at 44 lbs. I had heard that the Z9 and Z11 had issues and I see a lot of them for parts not working on ebay. I always wanted one but decided to add amps instead. I love the old yamaha gear and the Z11 to me was the high water mark. I might take a chance on one someday. So my test takes it to 1% THD. Many reviewers in magazines over the years have used clipping as their measurement standard. Yes 1% THD is considerably more (percentage wise) than 1%, but the actual difference in output power is insignificant

I have a 2002? TX-DS676 I think is rated at 80/ch driving Klipsch R-620F fronts in a 5.1 setup without the sub. ( complete klipsch speakers ) and it rocks. I went to Onkyo back in the early 90's after having a 120w/ch Sony receiver that was blown away by the Onkyo 70 or 75w/ch surround receiver I got to replace my bedroom setup after a 2 ch Harman Kardon amp got killed by lightning. I also got a pair of JB tower speakers that were all display models heavily discounted at Circuit City. The Onkyo just blew away my beloved Sony with 1/2 the rated power. I have been a Onkyo fan ever since. I got this receiver used several years ago for around $75 after my DS575 ? unit died. They are both from around 2002 and were around $1000 retail I think. Neither have HDMI but both had 4 optical inputs so who cares. I think mine weights close to 30 lbs as well and it is only 5.1 channels. Another great video. Love your stuff.

You should also look for Pre-ins, so you can use an old receiver to add channels or add power handling if you need to get up to the 2ch power levels. I have an old Denon for this anything without a HDMI port is dirt cheap and usually plenty powerful!

Hell yeah, I just recently bought an ONKYO TX-SR608 and after setting it up with the Auddesy mic this thing is crazy! Granted it may not be the newest and greatest but she's a powerful ol gurl! Not to mention I only paid $80 shipped for it lol-ol-ol had to pay $12 for a remote and another $24 for the setup-mic but this thing blows my mind hooked up to my Sony Bravia 70in flat screen and the Klipsch speaker system.... I'm still learning the settings myself but man the transformer inside is the size of a microwave lmao 🤣

Another Onkyo user here running a TX-NR717. If the fan is anything like mine, Onkyo 3 different speeds on it, and turns it off completely if the amp section isn't threatening to melt down. I run a laptop chill pad on mine at all times, pulling air out the top that keeps it pretty happy. Already sent it in once for network chip issues, and it's not perfect in the hdmi department eithet. Movies are amazing though!

rjolly87 I've been reading that many onkyo owners encounter hdmi issues. What sort of issues do you have regarding the hdmi ports? And would you say the issues are deal breakers when looking to buy an onkyo or something that might be annoying more than anything yet manageable?

solace angler It's hard to say. My unit worked great until it bricked on a software update. Repeated attempts to get the unit up and running finally came through, but no matter what I tried, the primary hdmi output never worked again. The unit went in on a special service program for network chip issues (requiring HDMI board replacement ironically enough) and came back with a working primary output, except that it kept dropping out repeatedly forcing it to reconnect every time, dropping video in the process, with some times not even coming back on its own. Switched back to the secondary hdmi output, relatively no problems at all. Do your research before buying. Keep the receiver cool. I picked mine up second hand, and given that I essentially paid $120-$140 for what was a $1k only a few years prior, I have very few complaints.

Great Video as shears BigD. I know you don't have a way of testing it, but it would be interesting to see what thr all channels driven output is. One of the deceiving practices of Home Theater Amplifier companies is only stating the 2 channel output, knowing full well at least 5 of the channels will be driven. When that happens you have a dramatically lower number.

I found one of these exact model RZ810 on the used market for like $600 - is that a good deal? It will be replacing a Onkyo tx sr803 .The 803 has pre outs & I use a Outlaw 5000X that has 120 watts all channels driven.. But my older AVR don’t have WI FI , Bluetooth or any of what’s pretty much standard these days..Would that AVR be stronger than my external power amp? Outlaw 5000X 120 w @ 8 ohm :/ 180 @ 4 ohms.. Maybe use 810 for 2 channels & amp for surrounds?

Unfortunately you never went back to the pre amp output on this receiver. I own this one and I am going to be hooking it up to external amplifiers. I was wondering when the pre amps output reach their peak output without distortion. Is it when the volume level is to maximum level I don't believe the AD-1 can test preamps but figure I would ask.

Id like to see the same test with all channels active. Speakers don’t need to be connected to all channels just switched on in the surround setup. These receivers switch either voltage or current(i forget which) and if all channels are active it drops the rated voltage. Im really curious what the actual output is.

You should test every channel because in all recievers the main channels are the Front channels so manufacturers can put better amplifiers into just those 2 channels and skimp out on the other channels because there not used for equivalent power as the front channels. It would be good to know if ALL CHANNELS on these recievers are equal or do some have lower power output.

40 Hz should not be a problem with any home theater receiver as most are rated to 20 Hz. It would be interesting to see all channels driven, but that would be a big investment.

It's a lie. Unless you listen to test tones instead of music. Also, why buy a 9 or 7 channel reciever for stereo 2ch listening? In a home theater setup with 5.1 chs up to max channels, this AVR would run at 80W or less if used as intended.

Hi, where did you get the information that it´s rated 130W x 2 @ 8 ohm and 0,008% THD? The datasheet says 150W @ 8ohm Dynamic Power and separately that 0,08% THD is at Half Power ? Can you maybe do a comparison with the TX-RZ840, because it is newer but in the datasheet it is actually rated: TX-RZ810 Dynamic Power 150w @ 8 ohm and 0,08% THD at Half Power TX-RZ840 Dynamic Power 130w @ 8 ohm and 0,08% THD at Half Power And should be weaker, and WTF means at half power? So It means 0,08% THD is only at 2x70W ?
