Biggest Reason Expats in Thailand Will Leave in 2021? (Thailand vs Philippines)

Are retirees and expats in Thailand will be leaving for somewhere else in 2021? If so, what made this happened? Did the Thai Immigration Police announce a national campaign AGAINST foreigners?
Are foreigners not welcome in the country anymore? Are foreigners with a valid visa are getting told they are no longer welcome?
Are expats who remain in Thailand or people coming here in the future have a ton of walls to smash through with new rules and regulations?
Is it a place full of scammers? With all sorts of scams like the bar girl scam, bullet-in luggage scam and so on. Is it unsafe?
According to a KZbin video made by an Australian living in the Philippines, he says all of those things are true but are they?
I’m going to react to his video and give you my opinion. We’ll have a look if what he said in his video is true or not, or half-truth, should you take his videos seriously or not.

This australian was formerly vlogging about how perfect was her thai wife and how happy he was in Chiang-Mai. He always said she was better than any other woman, he was blaming the expats who were married to Isaan ladies met in touristic towns . When he got serious health problems and a wheel chair, her so perfect and trusty thai wife left him, so he went to live in the Philippines. Being rich, he immediately found again the perfect and reliable partner, and most of his videos are now oriented to tell Philippina girls are better than thai ladies. He seems all his videos are throwing tons of shit on Thailand. I do not believe or trust this aussie. This is my personnal opinion.

I AM A RETIRED EXPAT , LIVING IN THAILAND SINCE 1997 ; I HAVE A NONIMMIGRANT TYPE "O" VISUM , EACH YEAR EXTENDED FOR 12 MONTHS ON RETIREMENT BASIS. EVERY YEAR WHEN I EXTEND MY STATUS THE STAFF AT THE IMMIGRATION ARE VERY HELPFULL AND FRIENDLY. I TAKE CARE THAT THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS ARE COMPLETE AND ALL INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE. FROM THE MOMENT THAT I GIVE MY PASSPORT UNTILL I GET BACK MY PASSPORT WITH THE EXTENSION OF STAY , I NEVER IN ALL THOSE YEARS WAITED LONGER THAN 20 MINUTES. AFTER THE MANY "COMPLAINS" FROM FARANGS , I WANTED TO MAKE THIS STATEMENT.!! I FEEL HAPPY IN THAILAND.!!

The injured Aussie guy made some valid comparisons and was poorly treated in Thailand. Fact is that since 2018 Thailand has tightened-up aggressively on immigration, and scared expats off to easier countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, and especially the Philippines. Most of the foreign Thai-lovers have never been to, or resided in, the Philippines. One old Asia hand summed up that his 'ideal' would be to have a Filipina partner but live in Thailand. However, Thailand will continue to make immigration stricter and more costly in its efforts to attract up-market visitors and residents.

You are so correct . I was in the U.S. Navy stationed in the Philippines . I noticed that a huge % of men in their 50 to 60 that retired in the P.I. were low income and alcoholics. There #1 priority was to get drunk every day and they only seem to have about $1000.00 U.S. or less to live on a month. Low income men in their 50s or 60s are not good for any Country. Now if they are not alcoholics they not really a problem but they are few and far between.

Firstly thank you for your videos. I live about 40 minutes drive from Udon Thani and have been here with my Thai wife whom l met in my home Country for about 4 years. From my perspective l don’t find the immigration paperwork all that hard ( keeping in mind it’s a government body and all governments love paperwork) what l do at time find frustrating is when different immigration officers have different interpretations on immigration law, In relation to safety l have never felt in danger here, l am the only non Thai on my Soi and l go for morning walks every day at 0500 all l ever experience is locals setting up for morning alms say good morning to me or the occasional groups of monks stoping me to see if l can speak Thai, l even have the local hardware store owner insist l stop for some Chinese tea. I read a lot of negative comments online about Thailand however l can honestly say l have never had any bad experiences. I do however always keep in mind that l am a guest and treat all who l met with respect this respect is nearly always returned 10 fold.

There are about 800,000 expatriates living in the Philippines, according to our 2010 Census of Population and Housing. The top five nationals living in the country are as follows: 29,959 Americans; 28,750 Chinese; 11,583 Japanese; 9,007 Indians; and 5,822 South Koreans (as of 2019, there are about 150,000 South Koreans here in Pinas). There are 4,846 North Koreans, and 3, 474 British nationals. These figures do not include those who were naturalized, and those students from various parts of the globe like medical students from India, and other students from Africa, Asia, and from almost all the places in the globe. ( When I was younger, many Thais came to study in the Philippines that I have a friend , who got married to a Thai.) Our government has contained the bad elements, at present, but our laws are sometimes unpopular to foreigners. But even, then, many are still coming over to live here. Peace!

How strange i did not notice any of this when i was there something like 15 times or so. Well the traffic is what it is because it is quite crowded at times but i can see that they are good at cooperate to get the traffic moving in foe example Bangkok. I would have known if there were as massive of scams as you describe since i do understand a whole of a lot of their language. No i must say that of course there are scamers at all locations in the world but i would not put Thailand as a place of where there are plentiful as you describe. In opposite i would rather say that they are more friendly then a lot of countries i visited Philippines being one of them and Cambodia in the mid 1990´s. I am more concerned about criminality in my country Sweden and i would not go out walking some places a late evening, in fact there are places that i do avoid even during the daytime. I have always this far felt safe in Thailand and i was all over the county in cities, suburbs and out on the countryside.

I haven't had any problems living in Thailand because I'm not a drain on their system and obey the law. Some people have a silly attitude when they come here & think because they bring a few thousand dollars a year to the country Thais should be treat them like royalty, as a tourist & a customer of the hospitality industry fine, but if you are living here you need to drop that attitude and be more humble & accept that you are asking to live as a guest in someone else's country.

Having been in Thailand during the retirement change period I did notice a huge movement of people out of the country. Nearly all had money, but didn't want to leave it permanently in a Thai bank account. Also the 15 million of impacted bills is a fraction of the cost compared to the income receive from tourists. A simple fee of 100 baht for tourists would cover this cost and give insurance to them. The original video only points out that the media started to highlight the scams internationally in 2018, not that they have just only recently started. Personally I have been assaulted by bus company drivers for asking for return of property that was stolen on overnight buses. The concept of saving face appears to be an excuse to lie through your teeth and not expect consequences. If you challenge the lie, expect violence as a return. Also remember all those people there with fake documents are there because of corruption from officials. It's never their fault but always the tourists.

Thailand is not for everyone and I kind of agree the thrill has gone from 20 years ago to today. I think Thailand just caught up with the western world and the land of smiles does not smile so much as it used to. Years ago the smiles were genuine, an appreciation to meet you. Now it feels a different there is more greed like the west. Thailand’s politics has always been in the spot light with the red and yellow shirts but now with an unelected general of the army in charge of the country along came more rules which simply farang do not like and forced a lot of expat retirees to leave in droves to other more favourable unexploited un westernised places like Cambodia which is like Thailand was.

Heck, I planned for the last 10 years to become an expat in Thailand. Along the way, the US embassy stopped the income verification letters. That is a huge inconvenience for me. I have no intention of putting 800K baht on deposit in a foreign land, of which I have few if any rights. Monthly transfers are a hassle at best, assuming no timing errors, showing foreign source errors, etc. The constant 90 day reporting has always been an annoyance but no real change there except the amount of paperwork they require. Then Thailand changed the Health Insurance requirements. Now the current COVID process for entry is almost impossible for me to process from where I live in the USA. The cost is nutty, even for me who could easily afford it. So Expats may be leaving, but more importantly, less people will become expats.

You can pay a visa company to do all the leg work. Make sure they been around a long time with good reviews. If you have the money, they can be very helpful. You don't need to deposit 800k in Thailand for a retirement visa. You can get the non-immigrant OA or OX (also retirement visa) in your home country. The 90 day reporting can be done through an APP on your smartphone. But yea, the paper work is a pain if you do it yourself.

He's just a bitter, crippled old man mad because his younger girl friend dumped him. He's a life coach, or so he says. Should practice what he teaches. Let it go and move on.

Truth is Thailand can do whatever it wants. I know very little but I would be a vister to Thailand. I have learned enough to know my expectations should be left in my country. I don't think that changes even if someone is living there. It is probably hard to feel powerless as an exapat. If it's not working anymore just leave. No need to put out negative stuff on a country that isn't your's.

Well said, having spent many many years living a beautiful life there, I cannot agree more. I left last year for my own reasons and miss it dearly for many others. The "powerless" feeling you described is real and tortuous until you just relax into that fact, then it's even better. But like everywhere it is not groovy as it was, no place is. Still beautiful as always.

My Australian wife and I were both living and working in Thailand, with expensive medical insurance and paying income tax. In 2013 my wife was diagnosed with cancer. After receiving the worst medical treatment imaginable at a big-name hospital, and after paying-out over $120,000au plus the insurance payments, died three months later whilst being refused palliative care because THAT department was busy providing 3 day rest care packages for rich officials. Thais are GREAT at image, but not so good with substance! The ONLY reason I go back is to tend her grave, they even run a scam over cemetery maintenance with some gin-soaked squatter regularly setting light to the entire place to clean-up the rubbish!

Great video! It give a more balanced view. Thailand is a sovereign country and have every right to chose who they will allow to come. Sure, there are scams and easy to avoid. Many retirees must leave due to stricter visa rules and the fact FOREIGN Embassies has stopped issuing pension affidavits. THAT'S LIFE! When you chose a retirement destination you must calculate the benefits and disadvantages. Elderly people from Europe would be significantly better of retiring in Europe due to free health care. The strong bath makes Spain, Italy, Greece, and Portugal great alternatives. In Europe you are welcomed and seen as an asset. Anyway, Thailand will get a lot of Chinese tourists and regular vacation tourist will arrive. Now there is only “Netflix” and “Take away” tourists in Thailand in 2021.

As Expat , I follow the rules. I have to admit though it frustrating, with rule changes. For example retirement visa states 800,000 in a Thai bank. New rule this year 3 months before and 3 months after visa must keep 800,000 in the thai bank account . This Bank can only drop to 400,000 for 6 months, Then must have 800,000. In the thai bank account. To me it is fact the official web site is not updated with the new rules that makes it frustrating . I have no issues with Thailand immigration changing rules, after all it is Thailand government job to ensure the safety of the thai country.

Hi, This Australian guy is full of resentment because of his failed relationship so he has nothing to say about how great Thailand is. The tightening of immigration was like you said to stop those who fraudulently obtained their visa's. I know if I was in charge I would have similar regulations in place. Is it too much to ask that a person who wants to live in Thailand can afford to do so. Medical insurance is a must unless you are loaded and can afford any bills that might arise due to poor health. There were too many bums getting into the country and are a drain on the system. My only gripe with Thailand is the costs of the visa's way too much but it is as it is. With regards to the scammers, they are all over the world where tourists gather. Just be sensible and vigilant know your surroundings and above all else have a great time visiting.

Well, I live in Thailand since 2 years and hear some friends complain about the new rules in VISA. First uncomfortable things for many expats are the VISA RUN was stopped. 2nd is FARANG have to paid the penalty bill, when the condo manager forgot to check in for ihm by immigration office. In my case when I try to make the visa step by step myself, I lose the challenge by open a new bank account for put inn 800 000 baht financial guarantee. So I put the money into my old account which I opened 10 years ago. By this challenge I realized why Thailand so low salary and living costs and I accept the ineffective but quite secured. yes, I like to living here. Comfortable is expensive.

Just a couple of questions max, and if they are to personal I do understand. 1 you live in Thailand, may I ask what is your occupation or are you retired. 2 do you have a Thai wife, I suspect so for the amount of time you,ve spent there. And 3 if so how did you meet and where. I,m curious to know why you and some people including some thai officals want to change the image of a country. Which is so unique, like no other place on earth.Yes you maybe right a lot of blokes go to Thailand to relax have a great life or holiday. Yes some parts of the entertainment industry are a little over the top. As long as the ladies are of legal age and you feel comfortable around them, I don't see any real problems. It may sound like I don't care about the country and where it's heading. Although I do I have a few very good friends in Thailand, I have lived there and Vietnam in the last 3 decades on different occasions. So I do know a little about what I,m talking on. Like I said I,m just curious, I was close to marrying a kmer thai lady once about 21 years before. It didn't work out for a couple of reasons. But it was nothing major or hurtful, she just wasn't sure and it wasn't expensive to find out. Honestly I do say why change a country that is so beautiful and unique and the people and culture are very nice. And really most countries have a seedy side of life, it's just in some places its more apparent then others. But that's why Thailand is Thailand to change it to much would be sad. Just my opinion bye have a great life.

Can you explain to us all why should foreigners pay more in any hospital then local people ? You people here totally forget that Thai people not pay any more in any other country at there hospitals then local people. So of cause this is a mega rip off. I just had a hip operation in pattaya in a private hospital and they charged my insurance in Germany about 5 times the price then what it costs in Germany. Think about what is the monthly income of hospital staff here compare to German staff the the prices are mega high. People here in Thailand are just get extremely greedy in the last few years. So I think also everyone should leave so they will learn it the hard way to be reasonable.
