The way Issac just sits there at the end looking so exhausted and distraught like he gave everything, his all in this performance breaks my heart. If you’ve been depressed or have anyone in your life who has depression you recognise that look. It’s a sad thing to see. All you wanna do is hug him. Depression isn’t being sad, it’s being so so tired of the sadness. Normal people are sad and then they can have a cry or a rant and eventually it’s ok. For people like us, like Issac no matter what you do every is exhausting and painful and you loose the passion you once had. Sometimes you have good days and the depression fluctuates day to day but it’s always there creeping from behind ready to take u like a wave. When the wave is there at first u can swim, u can keep it at bay but then a bigger wave comes along and engulfs you in water and now your fully submerged. All of a sudden it’s crying every day for no reason and then not crying for a month, it’s never eating and then binging till you feel sick, it’s never showering because you now have to prioritise your energy, it’s never sleeping and then sleeping for a day straight cos being alive is exhausting. It’s being alone but not wanting to be lonely. It’s staying in bed for a month without leaving the house. And if you don’t keep it in check, eventually it kills you. I’m glad Issac left, I think for his mental health it was the best thing for him. But be grateful we have songs like this one and the whole album of afut because Black Country new road has made music that’s so sad but so awfully beautiful. It hurts how beautiful basketball shoes is. He should be proud, they all should be, they’ve made something that could never be remade or repeated. Hope he’s doing better now

You describe it perfectly. What's even worse is when the people you love try to help, but they just don't understand what you're going through (and you hope they never have to go through that). A loan is expected to be repaid, but very rarely will you ever pay back the exact value of the loan you received, that extra value is called interest. So he is singing about a person who has given him a generous loan in a figurative sense, potentially someone who gave him the best time of his life, but loan implies it came to an end, and Isaac now feels like he has lost a lot more than he gained from the time in the first place, hence the crippling interest

one thing i adore is how at about 7:40 in the song, each instrument plays a part to restate the motif of the song. and each instrument having its own part, transitioning from one to the next, as it builds up tension to when they finally come together at 8:18 . it’s stunning, tickles my brain and ears wonderfully. it’s a motif i could hum to myself so easily but the depth of it can only be heard in the song itself. and that brass, absolutely stunning. 🙏
