I love when Mike is on. My hatred of the VA has increased since my best friend's brother was diagnosed with stage 3 Colon Cancer and has been fighting througha VERY aggressive treatment protocol. He's a former Army Ranger so there is not an ounce of quit in him, but his VA "doctor" fought him for a YEAR about getting th colonoscopy done. The " doctor" kept telling the Ranger that he was " too young" for that. The Ranger is only 45, and could have had a diagnosis sooner and avoided so much of this.

So sorry to hear that. Sounds about right for the VA. I was pleasantly surprised to get great help from the VA in Los Angeles, but then went to PHX and have had terrible experiences with a doctor that didnt know the first thing about listening to a patient

To Evan’s point, I always appreciated the Israel/Switzerland approach. You can even broaden it out and mandate 2 years of service in military, intelligence, first responder, green peace, certain non profit, homeless shelters, etc. Make the country and the world a better place and better yourself simultaneously.

I think there is a good conversation to be had for restructuring the entire military. At this point, with the way America fights, "special" forces are now just regular forces. No one outside of SF does anything kinetic. From the army perspective there's basically two armies. The kinetic army and the office army.

Politics has invaded all ranks within the Army, especially the senior NCO level. My own experience convinced me of that after getting passed up on promotion by people that were low performers at their jobs(primary MOS), people I served with that I knew their personal performance as well as their platoon or company's.......but were great at ass kissing and their "friends" that sat on the promotion boards. The low performers made rank.....the people leaned on to accomplish missions got passed over. I would argue with Mike about the necessity of having a large scale forced entry ability, but I do agree with the ideas of training methodology.

Ima sound like a nerd but in Warhammer 40k about centralized spec ops their is a space marine chapter that already does what yall taking about. Called the death watch headed by a death watch commander they pull only the best space marines from each chapter and they are tasked with hunting humanities greatest threats. As each space marine is able to wear their chapters insignia on their shoulder be it blood angels or dark angels as to recognize they are death watch they wear their death watch insignia on their left shoulder. Def a good read

Excellent way to put it in two categories, Evan. The Missions and the Means. I am a vet from FDF (and Bosnian War), and we ALL serve from bootcamp new recruit to earn every rank earned up to a full General, but... we still get some Means/PR yahoos in the mix. No system is perfect. Not many, but we do, and they are the target of every loath-filled comment, prank, humiliation, etc. until they either quit or change their ways. F&^% those guys with a chainsaw. FIN would've NEVER won the wars against the aggressor (namely Russkies) with a political / snake me-me-me stance. No, nope, ei, njet! The independence was won by guys focused on the MISSION. Salute to my 2 grandfathers who served 5 yrs against the commies. RIP and salute.

With VFW and American Legion, it depends entirely on the specific post. Many do have a Cantinas as a money generator. The employees are just that. They don't know anything about where the money they generate goes. You would need to talk to an actual member at that organization. The one I am in doesn't have a Cantina so we have to work a lot harder to generate funds to do anything....but all of those organizations are supposed to have at least one elected officer who's only job is helping vets in the area.
