Welcome back to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com, today we're digging into the Artist 15 from Blackstar. By utilizing some proprietary technology, the Artist 15 bridges the gap between traditional American and British amp sounds. The power amp section of the Artist 15 is optimized to wring all possible tone from 6L6 tubes, and the result is a dynamic sounding amp with classic British chime and sparkle. The preamp circuit is revamped to accompany this special power amp design, including a Blackstar exclusive: the Infinite Shape Feature. This knob alters the EQ structure of the Artist 15 to blend between American and British equalization, offering an infinite number of Atlantic-spanning hybrid voices. The Artist 15 is expertly engineered and the feature set proves it, featuring a speaker simulator out for recording or playing direct at a gig, a pristine reverb, as well as footswitchable dual-channel operation. Channel 1 delivers sparkling cleans and a stripped-down feature set with an emphasis on signal integrity, while the second channel brings in the ISF control for a clean tone that breaks up nicely when pushed. An individual Gain control on Channel 2 lets you set the breaking point just where you like it, which opens up the possibilities for hitting the front end with any number of pedals. Each Artist 15 is equipped with a single Celestion V-type speaker, and is designed and engineered in Northampton, England.

I have this amp and love it. I swapped the EL34's for 5881's and put a Celestion Greenback in it. Amazing.

I think you mean you swapped the 6L6 with 5881's . EL34 is a preamp tube. 5881 is a power tube.

EL34's are power amp tubes as in most Marshalls, 12ax7 is a preamp tube

I got the studio 10 with 6l6 tubes, anyone know if it will sound similar to this amp? Thing is I like the distortion on it a lot. But it has a drive circuit so the distortion is not from the tube? So I might as well be using a ht pedal? In person amps always sound a bit different so I’m wondering if this is essentially a higher wattage version of that amp I got. Also with natural distortion. I feel a bit confused as to the value of the amp if it’s using a built in pedal distortion . I like the sound a lot but maybe I should just buy the pedal instead tbh

Hi Andy - Can you do a demo of the Fender Bassbreaker 15W Combo? I think that the features are similar between these two amps (fx loop, direct out, reverb) - but they have different tubes and channel/gain setup. two new amps for this year that look really cool and are something different from both manufacturers! :)

Not directly but there is a speaker emulation output that you'd connect to a mixer/interface first, then you could plug headphones into that.

In other demos I thought this amp seemed to lack some presence so it's nice to hear that this amp can cut through. Should also sound better once the speaker breaks in.

Harsh and lacks bottom end in all the demos I have heard. It would certainly cut through the mix for solos.

Matt Gilbert I recently bought this amp, and it doesn't lack bottom end at all. Looks like Andy has the bass turned down a little for this demo. It's really a fantastic sounding amp.

I put 5881's and Tung Sol 12AX7's in it and a Celestion Greenback and it sounded a whole lot smoother and not as spiky... I love channel 2 with the ISF all the way to British.. That is how I use it... bring it to the edge of breakup. Then use pedals.

Note for Spanish Bombs he had the master volume cranked. I tried one in a store as well and couldn't raise the master much past 9 without me realising it would be way too loud for home use, but that's where the magic of tube amps are, when you crank the output above half way. As a final aside, the Artist amps are based predominantly on late 50's/early 60's amps that didn't have a lot of inbuilt gain but would break up nicely at the aforementioned volumes.

Need help...I thought I heard on Anderton's that channel 1 was bypassing the preamp, hence the volume knobs were acting on output tubes on both channels. But there is also a master volume. Does not make sense ???

There are several amps who base there sound on clipping components that are not tubes. I'm sorry to sound like a snob but I personally can hear this in the Blackstar gear and though aspects of its 'tone' are pleasant such as its attack and transient response the heart of the guitars timbre is too altered for my taste. Certainly a great amp for poeple learning though of course.

There’s no diode clipping in this amp, gain maxed and cranked you’re only getting into Ac/Dc crunch. If there were diodes you’d be able to get more gain. Diode clipping is only in the Venue series on the dirt channel so you’re just making stuff up

Do you know if this is is less faint than the studio 10 6l6? I really like its tone but it has a gain circuit so the distortion is not coming from the tube as much as the circuit like the ht pedals? Makes me consider just buying an ht pedal tbh. But I wonder if this is just a higher wattage version of that studio ten. I really love the tone of the studio ten but for the money if the distortion is due to the gain circuit maybe I should just get the ht pedal. Or this amp could suffice if it’s the same tone, especially with more watts.
