Wow, I thought this pose was all about lengthening the front of the body from the thighs through the hips, chest, and throat. And it is, but for me the main challenge and opening is in the arm and shoulder! It's going to be quite a journey to get into this pose but I have found a serious point of tightness in the body along my front shoulders and arms and am grateful to have found it so I can work on it. Thank you.

Thank you this was helpful. I've always paid more attention to my hamstring flexibility than my quadricep flexibility.

First time I tried this I was sweating like a pig as I lost my king pigeon years ago. Haven’t grabbed my foot yet but felt a lot more comfortable second time around. Lovely video made me remember how regular practice gets you places

Wow, thank you so much! I was able to do the pose by following your tip and using a strap. It's a real back bender!
@quickchris10 Жыл бұрын
I swear I was taught to do this w/my supporting foot tucked under groin, toe pointed, sitting on the heel of my foot, the sole pointed just slightly toward the inside of the extended leg, ``back in the day.'' I had an instructor that came around and checked our positions, too. So I don't know whether I got off track, but I think it can be done that way. (We also just called it ``Pigeon --'' what now seems to be divided into the two poses of Pigeon and King Pigeon.) The posture everyone is now calling Pigeon is depicted in the book, Yin Yoga, as Sleeping Swan, I seem to recall. So methinks calling the same pose by two different names is a little confusing.

I can't turn my elbow towards the sky after grasping my foot, amy tips to do that ?
@vickyd7541 Жыл бұрын
I find this too, not a fluid movement. I get stuck here, but instead of forcing it (never force anything - it's not yoga!) I focus on thoracic extension and slow breathing, as I keep holding the foot. This lets me slow it down and listen to my body, and really really slowly my elbow turns toward the sky. It's a complex posture - so many moving parts and not in a way we are used to daily - it's a process of unlearning our instinctual habits (especially the stress response of contracting the front of the body) and re-learning sense of safety - so slowing it down might be the best way to get there. With time and practice it gets easier, I promise.

I was born with extremely tight shoulders, but with practice it has changed. If that's your problem, then practice more shoulder opening exercises. There is the puppy pose, but need to hold it for longer, and more intense stretch version with elbows on blocks. Also, a really good drill with a strap is here: kzbin.infooD544yrtyes. The use of the strap to get into king pigeon as shown above only helped me so far, because I found I was pulling on the strap and in the process tightening my shoulders - so I never got into the final pose this way. But if you practice this and "almost get there", keep working on the shoulder opening and elbow rotation while holding the foot. Hope it helps :)

Hi there

Your video and the Aasana's steps are really great and well acquainting the body's own orientation. But, the strap part ( an enforcement) is avoidable. Yogic practices, are to soul's objectives, the body's own acquaintance with that objective is the essence ( than attaining posture ). The very inner interest, would drive (unit the toe and back bend hands together ) instead of strap which enforcing against the body wish. Yogi need to wait until bodily acquittance without strap and enforce. Thank you, I wish you all the success. From India.Thank
