Porsche all day everyday. M2 if you didn't have another practical car but for a dedicated sports car? mid engine NA flat six every time.
@funfun56564 жыл бұрын
@76 Depends. They're in Utah so it's not quite as bad as up here in northern ontario Canada but those cars don't really like rough terrain and the roads up here can get so white washed that it's basically off roading plus those engines don't like being cold started so much and sometimes it's not possible to plug in a block-heater. Drove my Boxster for an entire winter once when times got tough back when I decided on finishing my MBA. Obviously I decided to fund it by selling the G-Wagon...I'd say it's because the Porsche was worth a lot less but it's more or less because It was my first car and I'll never sell it ...needless to say it would have been way better idea to buy $1500 crusty old subaru for the winter.Maybe it wouldn't be so bad with different coilovers/struts to lift it up 6inches or so otherwise it gets stuck in most parking lots up here because they're either knee deep in snow or basically skating rinks. Even studded tires barely help. The 911 4s wouldn't be as bad with the weight over the rear axle and power at all 4 corners. Much better asshole car to daily drive through the winter...also twice the value of the boxster or cayman.
@funfun56564 жыл бұрын
@z z Yeah...I mean don't get me wrong Porsche is great. it's just the polar opposite variety of fancy car from a lincoln. Porsche: A machine to satisfy those who prefer feeling of a raw but somehow silky smooth visceral driving experience leaving them more connected to the road. Lincoln: For those who want to cruise in style by blocking out the rest of the world and feel like their car is floating....but can't afford a Rolls Royce because their piece of shit son just had to get accepted into an ivy league.

@TheChannel19788 жыл бұрын
I've driven the full M lineup at a recen BMW track day to celebrate the launch of the M2 in New Zealand. All M cars were fantastic and the M2 was in no way behind the M3 or M4, exception interiour cabin details. BUT the flat six sound of a Porsche, and maybe the last generation of Cayman to have it is more exciting than any turbo charged M car, that's my opinion. What will you drive? A car with racing pedigree and an engine that will never come back? Or a car with turbo engine that will be surpassed by future turbo engines?

I’ve driven, tracked, and raced so many Caymans (from the 987S through the phenomenal 981 GT4), I think I could do it in my sleep. So the fact that I have more fun tracking an M2 maybe is colored by the relative newness. I just love the way it tip-toes through corners, as you guys said. The chassis and brakes are phenomenal, it’s more knife-edged but in a good way. I love the Cayman, it’s as ridiculously Porsche (that is, awesome) as they get. But the M2 is more alive in my hands. Starting at 11:17. Dude.... Your crazy to not want to FEEL what the tires are doing. Go to the track in a car with hydraulic steering like an E36 M3 and get to the limit. You can FEEL when the grip starts to go away in the steering wheel. You can feel everything the car is doing through the wheel. It's amazing and the way ALL sports cars should be. So sad the EPA stepped in and now we have crap electric steering. Bottom line is I have lost some respect for you after that comment.
@Aless_Cnz8 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, but maybe that just isn't what he wants from that car, i think what he was trying to say is that in this instance he valued refinement over feedback... not what i would want, but i can see his point.

It's weird but since I realized in a simracer how much information the steering wheel can provide I appreciate the hydraulic steering of my car even more.

Agreed. I also think they're wrong about the feedback in the M2. Does it have the feel of an E36 M3? No. Is it completely devoid of feedback as they claim? Also no. It's far better than, say, the 235/228. On the track and autocross, while I'd like to feel more, I can definitely feel when the front end is starting to wash out. OTOH, the back end...That's damn near telepathic.

The Cayman is an amazing drivers car. I had this very decision to make, albeit a few years later, as I am not rich enough to afford brand new cars of this quality. I love the Cayman, but I can only afford one car, and the OG M2 was my choice. It's 95% of the driving ability of the Porsche, it really is not very far behind, but I needed rear seats, a bit of luggage space, and it is so much fun at normal speeds.

Every Porsche will become a classic in a 10 or 20 years. BMW just has been churning out family cars with body kits recently. Not that much soul compared to Porsches.
@WhiteBaron7778 жыл бұрын
I hate to be defending the BMW, but Porsches aren't guaranteed classics. The 924,the 996 series carrera and to some extent the 914 never really became classics. They came and went without any permanent influence. Very few considered the 914 to be a true Porsche, the 924 was always considered to be a worse 944,the 996 is the most hated Porsche of all time
@DobeliusDobbe8 жыл бұрын
It may sound crazy but some people have really started to appreciate the 996 design lately and who knows if the value drop is already beginning to slow down and even turn around. There are even some who think the original Cayenne is a future classic. We'll see in a few years how it plays out, keep an eye on the regular 996 prices.
@FerpiliciousProducts8 жыл бұрын
996's are cheap as hell where I live. See them as low as 20-25 grand Canadian in great condition. Honestly 997's haven't held their value super well either so far. And you can get some Boxster models for around 10 grand now in good running order.
@der84238 жыл бұрын
LOL so true, there will always be fewer M2s than Cayman GTSs for a start. Of the Caymans, currently, only the GT4 is going to be a future classic. The GTS is not going to be one, sorry. Anyone who thinks so is going to experience a tulip bulb correction before long.
@cmerrill158 жыл бұрын
You're looking at classics all wrong. Just because it isn't a gt4, doesn't mean it won't be a classic. The e30 325i is a sought after classic even though it's not the flagship that the m3 is. The gts obviously won't fetch the same value as a gt4 but it still could be a classic

I have a gt4 and a 1m, and this review really spoke to me. But, if/when the wife pushes for one to go, I won't hesitate cutting the 1m. Great video. I bought one of the last Cayman GTS allocations in June and picked up the car about a month ago. Sapphire Blue -6 speed manual - X73 suspension, PTV, etc. I sold my Ferrari 360 Spider as the prices were just nuts for a gated Ferrari. Was not sure what to expect from the Porsche. The car is phenomenal. I won't go into details comparing the two, but the after putting the first 1600 km on the car, the Porsche has not disappointed.
@MrFoof828 жыл бұрын
So I've been through your exact dilemma, with a PDK Cayman GTS at that. I sold the Cayman because it was "too good" and "too easy". I got a Boxster Spyder, despite living in Boston (we get at least as much snow as Utah, and 9 feet just two years ago). Where the Spyder is where I want it is A) the manual makes me feel much more involved B) losing the roof adds a bit of necessary discomfort and anxiety (particularly top down in winter in sub-freezing weather) and C) it has the same section width as a base Boxster despite the 3.8L, so it moves around rather easily when you want it to (which is why I passed on TWO Cayman GT4 allocations -- wider, stickier tires and aero grip).

Although now he's leaning toward the TTRS which is no good because I already have a friend with a TTRS, I need a shot at a M2 :) All three are great cars that go about their business very differently. I wouldn't fault anyone who picked differently, but I think I'll stick with my Cayman. I came from a STI and I think I'm done with turbos for a while. Mid-engine balance is joy and that flat six sounds better (to me) than anything cheaper than a Huracan. But yeah that M2 is sweet and I sure would love to try one out.

I loved the sequence with music and detailed views of the cars. Great editing Todd! I'm a little surprised by the brake comment on Porsche. I've always felt they're truly progressive so the more pedal effort the more brake. Whereas BMW M cars have great initial bite but doesn't feel as firm when standing on them. If I had to DD one of them the choice is M2 but with a JGC as your DD I have to agree the CGTS is an event, looks better and arguably better balanced. Lastly Porsche has better built quality and it isn't immediately apparent until one spends time in one.

I am sure the M2 drives great, but the Cayman GTS has that perfect mid-engined balance. It's just a far more exotic car and the one that will feel more special down the road. As well as the one that'll get more looks.

I personally will take M2 for almost $20K cheaper with more practicality and still fun to drive. for me it's a win win situation.

jankay that’s your opinion. Honestly I prefer the front design on M2 over cayman any day of the week. More aggressive look than bland face that of a cayman

Well done. Worthy questions and well reasoned conclusions, unlike so many comparison tests.

I love your show!!! I look forward to every Thursday!!! .. M2!!! PS. You have to drive the JCW GP2 before winter...2500lbs,6pods, Kv700 tires..track chasi!!! 218 HP! (only comes in manual) drive it on your back roads!

Obviously cars aren't viable as investments outside collector editions, but a late year, naturally aspirated Cayman will be desired many years down the road. It is every bit as good as a 911 as a total package. The BMW is cheaper and probably more practical but if I were to get a sports car at these prices, I'd also own a Camry/Accord econobox anyway.

Love Everyday Driver! Stick with the Porsche Paul. The flat 6 is beautiful, PDK is very nice, but everyone loves manual. Beautiful blue color. I love BMW just like you, but even if its an M..Porsche makes proper sports cars and I'd take a Porsche over a M powered BMW anyday.

1.)Todd, I think BMW as a brand makes an exceptionally overconservative driving aid system. My guess is that's necessary because a majority of their buyers don't realize that's they're rear-driven. 2.) Paul, that's not a "first-world problem". It's a "First world, unmarried, no kids problem"! 3.) Todd, thanks for sticking up for us guys fighting the good battle to keep cargo shorts alive! Great review as always. My pick is the M2.

How can you watch this video with the awesome landscape, the sunshine and all that and not realise how wrong they both are? That road is screaming for a Boxster ;)

When I drive my cayman s balls to the wall i still get 22mpg from the flat 6.On highway cruising about 28 is the best i have seen. Agree that cayman s brakes are something which you can improve upon. Thats the weakest link if there is one. I am sure porsche reliability is something which bmw cannot compete with. This is my take , m2 is for the boy racer in you , porsche is for the grown up person in you who loves going fast & is proud of what he has.

Great video and worth the wait. It's interesting to hear how there was no clear winner. The production value of these videos is some of the best around! I'd watch this with the audio off simply to take in the sites.

Excellent comparison! I've worked on a lot of these two cars along with lots of specialty cars daily. The M2 is a great car, but the one thing I cant stand is the way BMW skimps out on the clear coat on the jambs under the hood. It always looks like they have been repainted poorly. For a premium car, they should not be cutting corners on paint. Porsche always has amazing build quality and the paint/body construction is amazing. The way they design cars is so well thought out makes them the best car builder. I would definitely choose the Porsche over the M2. As great as the M2 is, Porsche always engineers things perfectly from the superb chassis, amazing engines, amazing interior controls with great ergonomics, latest technology, comfort, superb spot on handling, paint, etc... They are the one company that nails everything spot on! The M2 is a great car, especially for the price. I wish more was going on with the interior, but that's my personal opinion. It feels like its missing something. It's still a fast and fun car that will put a smile on your face. I've been working on specialty cars for almost 30 years and Porsche always builds amazing cars. Porsche did an amazing job on the Cayman GTS for it being an entry level Porsche GTS sports car. It gets even better with a GT4, GT3, and the GT3RS.

I just wanted to express my appreciation for both this channel, which is wonderful, and this episode in particular, which was especially poignant for me. Like Todd, I was, and remain, a big fan of the FRS. I bought mine new in 2013 and over the last four years it's evolved into a dedicated track machine with racing seats, a quick release steering wheel and a six point harness. It's really a giant killer at the track and I've been as far north as Mont-Tremblant Quebec and as far south as Road Atlanta. But the car is just not practical, or for that matter, livable on the street anymore. It travels between track events on an open trailer. And I'm stuck with my daily commuter when I'm not on track. (When you drive a Honda Fit every day, let's just say the FRS feels plenty fast.) The car I really wanted as a weekend car was a Boxster S. In fact, I've wanted one since first seeing a preproduction prototype on the road in Germany back in 1996. But a mortgage, kids, a college fund, etc, it was just out of reach without making too many other practical sacrifices. And just when I thought I was getting close to a 2-3 year old 981 being a possibility, the 718 arrived and drove the prices of 981s (and even 987s) skyward. Thanks Porsche. So about a year ago I gave up and decided if things went well this year, I would order an M2 in the fall. And I watched this review at least a dozen times. I almost felt as if I was sitting and living vicariously through the two of you, trying to figure out what to do. Over the last 2 months it started to bother me. As nice as the M2 is, and it's infinitely more practical [than the Boxster], I realized it wasn't exactly the car I wanted. And it would be crazy to spend almost $60K on what was basically my second choice, and for a 'weekend' car at that. But I'm thankful in that it made me realize that perhaps the car I really wanted was the Cayman. And by pure chance, I found a 2016 Cayman S for sale, sport chrono package, sport suspension, manual transmission, and only 3500 miles on the odometer. And it was expensive. But still workable. (I suppose it's to my benefit that my first color choice was yellow and transmission choice was manual, and this particular car sat for a while with no takers, as most people in the market for one, would walk right on by that combination) But it was exactly what I was looking for. So after 22+ years of dreaming, I am now a Porsche owner. And I want to thank you both for helping me make this decision by essentially presenting this exact question and debating it with precisely the balance of reason and emotion that I would myself. For what it's worth, up until a few years ago, my first choice would have been a Lotus Elise, and I think it was a brilliant car to replace the FRS. But I just don't think I could live with it every day or put up with it's idiosyncrasies as a road car. Consider me a loyal fan for life.

Excellent video guys! I just bought a 997 and am looking forward to adding an M2 (will never let go of this 911) when my kids outgrow the back seats. Looking at those 2 cars together as a potential garage makes me look forward to having the problem of choosing between a Porsche sports car and an M2 everyday!

I'm back here 7 years later and it's happened. This summer I added a 2018 Long Beach blue OG M2 6MT to go alongside my 997. Had a detour with a Macan S for several years but decided I wanted something more fun, with a manual, since I don't need child seats anymore. Well, the M2 has delivered fun in spades! What a joy to drive, and so different from the 911. It makes you want to just hoon around everywhere. Perfect street car for me. My only regret is not having bought one sooner. Just thought I'd share, not that anyone's looking.

Having driven both I would actually never go for the PDK if I can have a manual.

Thanks for another great video. My M2 just made it on to the boat so this helps prime me for that experience. Had I not been able to get an M2 allocation my plan was to look for a Cayman S. Have a great time in Europe

I haven't driven either. I've driven an E46 M3, and test driven a hydraulic steering Cayman S (so I guess a few models back), and between any M and a Cayman, I'd take the Cayman from a pure driving experience every time. Watching this video, the way you guys described the two, the things you liked more about the Cayman, and less about the M2 make me feel like I would pick the GTA every time. Anyway, good problem to have. Enjoy.
