Bobby Darin: Beyond the Sea, Simple Song of Freedom

In 1972 singer, songwriter and actor Bobby Darin was the guest in a CBC Vancouver Television series and sang his hits Beyond the Sea and Simple Song of Freedom, backed by Vancouver's Doug Parker Orchestra. Beyond the Sea, the English language version of Charles Trenet's French hit song La Mer (the Sea), was Darin's follow up to Mack the Knife, the Grammy winning Record of the Year in 1960 which was #1 for 9 weeks. Sea was also the title of a 2004 film on the Bobby Darin story starring Kevin Spacey. Song of Freedom was written by Darin in '69 and recorded by Tim Hardin. Other hits include Splish Splash, Dream Lover, If I Were a Carpenter, Things, You're the Reason I'm Living and 18 Yellow Roses. Darin died in 1973 aged 37 following heart surgery.

Bobby Darin died December of 1973, the year after this performance. You can see in this performance how his energy level is much lower than in prior years. He’s conserving his small amount of oxygen by not moving around as much on stage as he previously did in prior years. Still a great performance.

Lucky girl. Mack the knife 1959. Yr i was born. Always liked that song always a fan. I was too young to realize what a talented man he was. His range is great, his voice is beautiful. His immitations of stars.he danced, acted. Could do it all!!! WOW AND he writes music. my goodness talk about a Renaissance man. 😪 i wish his life would have been w/out heartache and bad health. WOWWW!! I'm from that era. I remember Darin as a R'n'R idol from earlier, and of course I remember Tim Hardin as a protest singer. But I had no idea of Mr. Darin's place among protest writers/singers. I don't think I'm alone in this. Somehow, Mr. Darin wasn't remembered for this. And G*d knows, he wrote & sang powerfully.
