Cabot PD was working an early morning accident on the overpass (Highway 67/167). During towing and recovering of the vehicles involved, it was feared debris may fall to the major highway below. A Cabot PD Officer was shielding traffic when a commercial vehicle slammed into the back of her patrol car. FORTUNATELY, she was not in her vehicle at the time of collision. Please remember to ALWAYS move over for first responders and tow drivers.

Inquiring minds wanna know just what the hell was the truck driver doing to not see the car up ahead with the lights activated? Texting? Asleep at the wheel being that it was just after 8 am? He had all the time and room in the world to merge to the left lane. Other questions; why was the Cabot PD handing this when it should have been ASP handling it on both roads since they are both state highways? That bridge is where highway 5 crosses over 67/167 at the first Cabot exit out of Jacksonville. And why was only a firefighter talking to the truck driver afterwards instead of the PD officers investigating what his mental malfunction was?

I'm a truck driver and was a volunteer firefighter for 11 years, so I've been on both sides of the wheel so to speak. I always move over for ANY vehicle on the side of the road, for a few reasons. One winter I stopped to help push a girl out of the ditch. I had my 3 year old in the car, in his car seat. I told him to stay in his seat. When we got her pushed out, I turned around and my son was out of his seat and out of the car, walking around in the road. Lesson learned, from that day on, if my kids was in the car, I didn't stop to help anyone. I even move over for cars on the side because you never know when a 3 year old might get out. As far a firefighter goes, one winter, we got called out on a 50+ vehicle pile up on I-71 north of Columbus, Ohio. We stopped to check on the occupants of a car that had slammed the guardrail. I was the driver, the truck officer told me to pull over on the shoulder, and not to block the lane, but I disobeyed his order and used the engine to block the right lane and the shoulder. Again he told me not to black the lane. I said to him, No disrespect intended, but this is how we were trained. You guys are my responsibility, your safety is my responsibility. I'm blocking this lane to protect you guys. We can discuss this when we get back to the station, but I blocking this lane with the truck to keep you guys safe and protect you if someone doesn't move over or if someone loses control. I never heard anything else about it, but this guy in this video is EXACTLY why the fire department uses the fire trucks to block the lane(s) of a motor vehicle accident or vehicle fire.

The video shoes the semi driver had plenty of time to move over without ending up Jack knifed in the road. The bar for obtaining a driver’s license, let alone a CDL, has been set WAY to low.
@justinkaufman4952 жыл бұрын
obtaining a CDL isn't easy. losing one Is. basically there's a million reasons yours can get taken away, but getting one takes weeks even months of training depending on where you are, and even then there are restrictions in certain circumstances. getting a license is easy in some places but annoying in others (EX: texas requires drivers education before you can get one and in some places the BMV is booked up for 3 months. I had to drive 3 hours out of my way to get mine, and even then it was $33 cash card or check only, I had to do 6 hours of drivers education split up into 2 hour segments per day, and even then I had to listen to a grown woman complain that I was driving too fast when backing up and out of a parking space in an empty parking lot in the middle of nowhere. it's not the hardest thing in the world but easy isn't what I would call it either. that being said in the states where it is hard to do you still have people tailgating you doing 120 on an open highway with plenty of room to get over, people still text, and drive everywhere they go and still swerve into occupied lanes and generally drive like idiots.
@weeksworks25212 жыл бұрын
Have you tried to get one? The bar isn't low. You can make it so difficult that it could be nearly impossible to ever get one, and there will still be no guarantee the driver won't get distracted or doze off once they are on the job. There aren't many of us old school drivers left. The ones that move over for any vehicle on the side of the road, the ones that still blink our lights to let a passing driver know it's ok to come back over or thank the driver that blinks his lights for me, the ones that see a driver that you're about to pass is coming up on a slower vehicle so you just back off or change langes further over so he can go ahead and get over instead of screwing him because you know you won't be past him before he gets there, the ones who doesn't speed up on the driver trying to pass and make him work for every inch and keep him out there for 10 miles trying to get around, the ones who doesn't ride someone's ass so close that if something happens they're gonna kill some one. No, it's a whole new breed out there, full of jackasses that have to be first, jackasses that think that because they're in 80,000 lbs of rolling death that they can push other vehicles out of their way, jackasses that think they don't need to slow down when road conditions deteriorate from snow and ice that their load won't let them crash and end up smashing asshole deep into other vehicles when the big crash happens in front of them. Have to say I am surprised how many commenters here think everyone should have just run down there, instead of having a couple of units drive to the scene to secure it with lights. Think it through folks, there are lots of first responders on that bridge. But it just so happened that the body cam was on one of the officers that had to DRIVE TO THE NEXT EXIT to get to the scene. Seems pretty simple when you think about it.
@timnew76622 жыл бұрын
Too bad that next exit is about 7-8 miles up the road. I knew they should have put a couple of "cut-a crosses" for official use in the median barrier wire when they worked on that part of 167 a year or so ago.

And it had to happen on an overpass that didn't have off/on ramps to the lower highway. I'm sure several of those on the bridge were down there in less than 90 seconds. Looked like even a tow driver was walking under the bridge when this body cam LEO began taking pictures.

@@Ray56z You really need to rewatch the video. The bridge itself was completely blocked and the officers that were on it were all on the east side of the bridge. The second accident happened in the lanes below the bridge on the west side of it. There was no way to get to that side of the freeway even had they gone back up the off ramp due to the concrete divider south of the bridge and the steel cable that was north of it that divided the north and south bound lanes. The ONLY way to get to the second scene was to get onto 167 north and drive to the next exit, which was 7-8 miles away, then cross over 67/167 and go back south on it. Which is what the officer had to do.

Fully a third of those behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer shouldn't be allowed to walk by one. Half of the rest need to have live feed cameras on them so they'll leave their addiction to cell phones alone. These schools put out those that can't even drive a 16,000lb box truck safely. And not being able to read the sign language is part of the problem, along with cruse control, automatic transmissions, being f'ing pampered. Being forced to drive every inch of your trip with the three peddles under the dash, the two levers on the left side of the steering colume, and the gear shifter(s) coming through the floorboard causes one to be aware. And being scared of that 80,000+lbs, and what it can do to you and others is the most important thing about driving a tractor-trailer. A million miles and knowing what those 80,000+lbs could do to me and others is what kept me on my toes every inch I traveled. Why would someone want to kill themselves or another for a moment of INTENTIONAL distracted driving? Fine trade off huh? A M'F'ing drunk is trying to drive, but those of you that use a phone in any manner are trying to use the phone-worse than a M'F'ing drunk-you're TRYING to KILL YOURSELVES OR OTHERS.
