Without someone like Theo, who approached this conversation as a genuinely curious and concerned citizen, these types of conversations always turn into a pissing match between politicians who start finger pointing and blaming each other and it completely blocks real dialogue, and forces people to tune out. This was such a refreshing conversation that cut all of that bullshit out. Learned a lot during this. Thanks Theo!

I'm certain that I don't vote the way this retired Border Patrol Chief does, and I agree with you. I do think it would be helpful also to have someone on who can speak to immigration policy and enforcement of immigration law. Discussion of the establishment of the Temporary Protected Status program in 1990 under immigration law was missed and it was *hugely* impactful to the history of immigration for this country. An administration's foreign policy also heavily influences its immigration policy / how it enforces immigration law. Example: My ex-inlaws are retired, middle class (but grew up working class) academics who were being threatened by government and army officials in their native South American country that was controlled by a dictator. Of course, they were loudly opposed to this dictator (as the US also has been). They actually had a credible case for asylum but decided to come on tourist visas instead, because if you choose to file for asylum, you understandably lose status if you return to your country of origin. Get this: they had green cards within 9 mos. of their feet touching US soil. I cannot emphasize enough how incredibly fast that is. It just doesn't happen that way... unless you are maybe earnest academics who are on the correct side of US foreign policy. These folks were not wealthy - so it wasn't that. Upshot: having the additional perspective of a foreign affairs / immigration policy expert really would round out all of the fascinating data presented by this guy.
@breeezy10179 ай бұрын
@@Nonameforyoudangit yea I definitely agree with the voting thing, and appreciate the perspective you added. Certainly this interview doesn’t dive deep enough into the nuances of immigration policy, which is necessary to understand the full picture. Obviously there is some bias baked into the viewpoint presented, but overall I think he did a good job of being considerate of other perspectives - even if it was just a surface level conversation.

I absolutely loved that Chief Clem was stiff on solutions and needs, and shedding light on reality but at the same time, he also described the devastating situation that aspiring migrants have to face like not being able to get a legal visa due to the backlog. I was a bilingual news reporter on the San Diego-Tijuana border from 2019-2022, the policies during that time + the pandemic + the Ukrainian flow of migrants + the lack of border patrol agents + a new president was overwhelming and devastating. Even more difficult was trying to be a fair and balanced reporter when you don’t have autonomy to state facts as you witnessed them. I wish I could be interviewed by Theo to continue contributing to this topic, the conversation must go on. 🙏🏽

Theo, as a Texas Hill Country native, I want to Thank you with all my heart for bringing Chris on your show, to shed light on a a situation that has such a significant impact on our community. Chris has the professional background, as well as verifiable experiences with this issue- to speak out to the states in our union that are not border states / and educate them to at least see that the national emergency at our border has nothing to do with race or cruelty/ it is instead about protecting the American people❤ This issue has caused a Huge drain on funding and resources in our communities because the resources are given to illegal imigrant families / and not available to American families that pay the taxes to fund these programs. I have personally experienced when they come to our country/ commit a horrible crime/ and run back to Mexico to hide from American authorities. Look up the “Sheila Bellish” case in Boerne Tx 1997 or 1998. Again, Theo - thank you, the more we can raise awareness about what truly goes on at the border, and how important it is to remember that there are people out there like Chris- a hard working Border Patrol agent who dedicate their lives to the service of protecting the American people 😊

What a great episode to shed some light on a problem we all can help with. I feel so bad for those going through the immigration process the "right way". I had a girlfriend who was here on a work visa for 2 years, she worked for CBRE at the time. Huge company. They let her go on September 8th 2023 and she had 60 days to find a new job or go. We weren't ready to get married yet, so a job was her only way to stay. To avoid breaking the law, she had to leave. And on October 29th 2023 before her visa expired, I took her to the airport after a couple months of sadness. Because she didn't want to break the law. I cried in my car at the departures section of O'hare airport in Chicago at 1am because I had to say goodbye to her when I dropped her off for her flight. I wish her and the others going through this properly were able to get what they desire, which is to be here and work hard and lead clean honest lives in a great country. 🇺🇸

I tried to move my small business from Canada. The lawyers lied and took the money and it turned out that you need to spend about a million dollars as well as be willing to hire employees consistently. They also do not really recognize computer based consulting businesses since the laws are so old. I run a statistical consulting business and the laws do not take that kind of work into account. If you are approved to move a business there you are also subject to a review every 5 years. So if you do not meet the constant standards to stay they can uproute you and kick you out. If your business happens do be in a downturn the year they review you you have to move your family out of the country. So we scraped that route and got a new lawyer to apply for a family sponsorship green card. My in-laws are american citizens so we are guaranteed the ability to be able to get a green card, however, the wait is about 15 years currently. We are about 3 years into the process. The crazy thing is that I would be bringing in a business as well as have the financial means to guarantee that I would not be using American tax dollars for any government handout programs. Meanwhile you have millions of people walking across the border with no issues. There are plenty of people who want to come in legally and bring jobs and skills to your country. Not only do you have an invasion occuring, but it is also causing a loss in the immigration that would actually benefit the country. The reason the laws arent changing is because no political side wants to touch that subject with an 80 foot pole. Its too divisive (and not in a way that benefits them).
@lucassmith18869 ай бұрын
Wow that is horrible. I knew it was relatively hard to get here, but holy smokes that is ridiculous

@@lucassmith1886 hard to get there for people who would benefit the country. Easy to get there for people that benefit the elites. When they say diversity is our strength they are not lying. They just dont mean your strength they mean theirs.

What a concise and clear speaking person Chris Clem is. I haven't seen the whole podcast, but I am agreeing with his perspectives so far. I liked the term, "Tall fences, wide gates". Very descriptive of how it should be. Let people who are honest and good people in, whether that is through immigration or work visas and keep the bad ones out at all cost. I think immigration is a problem all over the "western world", but for many different reasons. The US is based on immigration so it's different considering customs, religion, etc., than in European countries. I've always said that I welcome immigration of any kind as long as the ones we let in are good people and that there aren't too much of it. Said this since a young one.
@HubertofLiege9 ай бұрын
You know in the early part of the twentieth century they stopped all immigration from certain places.

Wide gates is actually faulty. There needs to be caps to ensure border security. Immigration laws need to be mainstreamed.

@@dieselbaby People have this massive misconception that our current immigration paradigm is somehow similar to back in the days of Ellis Island. The numbers aren't even comparable when looking at our modern wave of immigration post Hart-Cellar Immigration Act of 1965. We're always told "it's so hard to get here legally", when we're already taking in around a million immigrants every year. We're sidelining Americans who are looking for work in favor of outsourcing to cheaper foreign labor.
@KapteinFruit9 ай бұрын
Someone like me? You have no idea what I stand for and I was talking in general, not only the US. I clearly stated that things differ from the US to Europe. I can't speak on what would be "enough" in the US, but I can speak about it when it comes to Europe and we have too many already, should start deporting the ones who don't act right. My point was that there should be good options to seek asylum or work visas, but it should be done in the right way and not overdone. @@dieselbaby
