Another quote from his book, One Man's View of the World when asked about his time serving the people: - "I mean, if I want to lead a happy personal life, then I would have remained a lawyer and a businessman and today I would be very much wealthier than I am. But I did not set out to do that. I saw a situation which I thought was wrong and I sought to put it right and I have the satisfaction of seeing better-fed people, better housing, everybody owning their own home, everybody having children who go to school, better health services, recreational facilities, all they could ask for in life. The problem is they now take it for granted and they believe that we can go on autopilot."

I’m a 23 year old second generation Hmong man. After 3 years of watching and reading as much on Lee Kuan Yew and some other Asian leaders during the 1900s, all I can say is this is the type of leader the Hmong needed. Instead we were forced into a position of warfare and constant infighting, put in sufferable and indescribable positions by the French and Imperial Japan, we were not so lucky, unlike the men and women who were led by this great man. I too cannot speak my Mother Tongue efficiently and confidently enough to speak to my elders…this I am slowly working on. The current generation of my small population of people deeply saddens me…as the priority conflicts these days have become identity politics and ideologies that those who came before did not need to worry about. This is not good, and I fear it is the final blow to my generation. The loss of our language, rather the inability to express our mother tongue with supreme confidence is what is killing the new generations. History has not been so kind to my people, but there is something within me that is longing to return to the motherland of Asia…I have restless nights because I know my spirit longs to return…but I know it is inevitable that we remain nomads until the end of this planets life cycle.

The National Language of Singapore is Bahasa Melayu - Malay. There are Four Common Languages of Singapore are Malay, English, Mandarin, and Tamil. Business language is English. They are listed in the Republic's Constitution. Brilliance of LKY to recognize the importance of languages as part of the national identity. AND to recognize the importance of ethnic language identity. This way, the languages and dialects are equally respected. Chinese dialects are recognized as part of the country's ethnic Chinese citizens - for example, Cantonese and Hokkien are the predominantly dialects as most Singapore Chinese citizens can trace their roots to the provinces of Canton and Fukien. Plus, some Singapore Chinese citizens have dialectical roots of Teochew, Hakka, and Hainanese. It is not unusual for many citizens to speak three or four languages and other European and Asian languages. Singapore is an International World City State. Hope above helps.

As a young man of 27 having served in Vietnam, completing my university degree using my GI bill and working part time to graduate debt free. I was working In New Guinea building pipelines in the jungle and living in Bangkok. I worked one month on and two weeks off so I was passing through Singapore monthly and was very impressed with the massive expansion of modern public housing, comercial real estate and manufacturing. That was happening in the early 70's. What really impressed me was the war that the Singapore government was making on corruption. Government Corruption had always been a plauge in Asia stiffling the growth and prosperity of that part of the world and Singapore had pretty much eliminated it. That in my opinion was the main reason for Singapore prosperity today. Many Asians that are not Singaporeans often comment to me that they wish their government would copy Singapore's example.

Success of learning a language is a benchmark for a strong mind, persevere and dilligent person IMO. It actually tells, “look, I did this shitty thing to just be able to speak to you so I won’t give up on you easily in the future because I didn’t give up on learning your language”

@@tsukuneboy I agree with you! On top of that, learning foreign languages also is a sign of humility. Wise people are not egoistic and arrogant. Assuming just 1 language takes all is a sure sign of complacency that could kill. People tend to warm up to the foreigner who takes on their language. If you could do it fluency, you make wonders. In this case, where the late LKY wants his population to master the English and to know their mother tongues set this country up. But I personally do think the bilingualism in this country has gone down. Typically with the command of the Mandarin Chinese language. Not a good sign.

Not one of the best. THE best. Never has there been or ever will be, another like him. Everything he did was for the betterment of Singapore and its peoples. He was not about self aggrandizement.

Truly a man of wisdom with pragmatism. A true-blue Chinese man of principles and integrity of Chinese virtues. Western Democracy definition are faulty, LKY knows how to run his country with results, much to the admiration of the world leaders then.

Great man, I grew up in Singapore. I was at primary school when he died. I think we had a day off if my memory serves me correctly. Singapore like other successful nations needs to look after its own and regulate immigration in to the city state. It’s very quickly becoming a victim of its own successs.

I am Russian and somehow I do follow his guidelines, however, it all comes naturally to me and I never heard him say such things before today. The most important tools of mine are English/Mandarin/Russian and the ability to learn new trades on the fly. PS: I never complained about my income because speaking languages provides you with opportunities - decent money

Nice documentary. With inflation out of control and most material things seriously overpriced, it's a perfect time to focus on your spiritual growth and skills.

@@BordersLess I would like to think I have, but I always think there is plenty to learn. I will keep moving and do what I am naturally good in and try my best in a sea of realistic problems. I need to change those ways that don't work and look for other ways to move up and on.

That is why you don't depend on one person to fight for your root. What if that person dies tomorrow? Does that mean you don't fight and will die as well. You have to stand up yourself to fight for your root. It is your own root. If you cannot fight for your own root, who else can fight for your root.

As long as it's a society that does not cultivate covert narcisissm among its citizens. The psychopathy leads to the destruction of a nation and its institutions. Gross materialism can lead to this and over concern with pedigree, connections, and wealth of others..

It's true our parents and grandparents lived and worked to build a nation. They had a strong sense of improving the quality of life. So did the politicians and entrepreneurs. Is it partly because the wars destroyed the world and needed to rebuild it? Our time we live and work for our limited scope of life, family, company and maybe a community. The most focus is ourselves. The whole world culture is now internet virtuality, global. Does war mongering bring a drastic change for better to our values??? How can we breakthrough the political, economic and mental stagnation?
