Not entirely accurate, as according to star trek voyager, the USS Raven (7of9's parents, The Hansens, ship was the first Federation ship to encounter the Borg) approximately 17 years before Q flung the Enterprise off to meet the Borg. But on official records it was the enterprise as the Raven disappeared until voyager found 7of9 and eventually the Raven. Also not including the time travel shenanigans from First Contact that led to Archer fighting the borg.

I'm glad they EFFING remember impulse speed is essential 90% or more of the speed of light. I know old school SFX demanded ships moving and flying at essentially nautical navigation style. That is 2D flight and slowly. But it MAKES perfect sense for Star Trek Starships to fly like an F-22 strike fighter. Specially in a vacuum or orbital flight. Even a bloody behemot like the old Galaxy's. Because impulse is not tylium chemical burn thrust like the impressive engines of the massive Battlestars. Of the Battlestar Galactica universe.

The father/son relationship is what I love most here. A man who never really got the chance to meet or know his son, who didn’t even know he had a son until a week ago, goes to the depths of his own personal hell to rescue his son. The heart of a father, a parent, is to stand with their child to the very end. If Jack won’t go, Jean Luc will stay with him, even if they both perish. You can’t protect your kids from every trial or danger, but you can walk through the fire with them. Well done, sir!

Jean-Luc never expected to be a father. He warmed up to the idea once, but that was an elaborate revenge plot by a Ferengi. It really hit him hard in Generations when he received the news that his brother and nephew were killed in a fire. Even though Jean-Luc and his brother barely got along, family meant more than anything to them. At this point, when he was seeing Jack borgified the same way he was(except Jack kept his hair), Jean-Luc put his own demons behind him to let his son know that no matter what, he was going to be there. Standing next to HIS son, put all the anguish Jean-Luc had with his own father aside.

I think the whole Jack/Borg/Picard story is an allegory for depressed, on-the-spectrum kids being groomed into extremist/cult ideologies over the internet. The Queen said “HE found me! I had only my words”, but that was enough for her to get into Jack’s head and turn him against the people who loved him. And of course this cult message spread to every young person, turning them in the same way. In the end it was the power of a fathers love that got through to his son and convinced him to turn back before he did something there was no coming back from. Destroying the federation was an allegory for doing something horrible like going on a shooting spree, or cutting off his junk.

@@jnlaw2644 - I don't think. The Borg are gone. The Janeway virus fractured the collective into different factions. This Queen was one of many. So other Borg are still out there. Thst being said, it may be time to try a different approach to the Borg. Maybe let them rest a while, then try to introduce other Borgified enemies. Also, Guinan implied that the Borg were one of many extremely powerful races out in the universe. The Borg aren't the only ones out there, and the Federation isn't ready to face them head on. So we should come up with ideas about other races. Like Species 8472 from Voyager.

Something that's easy to forget in the Star Trek universe; even an outdated ship like the E-D has shields strong enough to protect it while entering the coronaphere of a star for a few hours, so escaping the explosion of a Borg cube of that size wouldn't even be that hard on them. This is got to be the most epic take down of a Star Trek villain in history and was poetic in line with trek ethos. The epic spectacle is just half of it, the queen is defeated not through force and strength, but by loyalty, solidarity, self-sacrifice and compassion as well as individualism. The way Alice Krige relishes every word, the way she chews scenery by just being there in a voice form (I'm not sure if the actress is behind the makeup but the voice is hers). Fantastic. And Jack is a character with lots of potential. Ed Speeler has the charisma to play a guy with bits of Kirk's swashbuckling personality combined with Beverly Crusher's kindness and empathy, and Picard's charisma. I hope they continue with that new series, Legacy or whatever, with Seven of Nine as a captain.

Seeing the Enterprise-D of my childhood do that glorious airlift drift into save everyone was something I never knew I needed, but DAMN did that make me ten years old again. Notice she was only put back in the museum "One Year Later", that means Matalas left the door open for a story of another year of service for her as Starfleet gets back together. She's still one of the biggest ships they have. If they budget it for it, that would be a heck of an adventure.

The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) was a 24th century Federation Galaxy-class starship operated by Starfleet, and the fifth Federation starship to bear the name Enterprise. During its career, the Enterprise served as the Federation flagship and was in service from 2363 to 2371 when it was destroyed during the Battle of Veridian III. During the Changeling/Borg threat of 2401, the rebuilt Enterprise was pressed back into service by her old command crew and flown from the Fleet Museum, where it was stored at the time.
